Banded together, Rayla, Callum, Ezran, Soren, Amaya, Janai, the Sunfire elves, Ibis and Pyrrah get ready for the confrontation with Viren and gather reinforcements.

Tropes:

  • Act of True Love: Callum throws himself off the Storm Spire just on the hope he can summon mage wings and rescue Rayla.
  • Actually a Doombot: The Viren that Soren stabs turns out to be an illusion created by Claudia.
  • All According to Plan: Viren's army is defeated, but Claudia tells Soren and Ezran that the army was merely a distraction, allowing Viren to get close to Zym.
  • Appropriated Appellation: Earlier, right before the human army began their march into Xadia, some Katolis soldiers chose to lay down their arms and leave the army. Viren allowed it, he accused them of being cowards and traitors and declared they would be forced to wear badges depicting a broken chain link to brand them as such. They take that symbol, and they adopt it as the emblem of their new army, which they bear in their banners as they take on and defeat Viren's army.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Queen Aanya comes to Callum's rescue while Kasef strangles him via a Neck Lift.
    • Also, when Callum summons mage wings and swoops in to save Rayla.
  • Big Damn Reunion: Many of Ezran and Callum's friends and allies throughout the series arrive to aid them. Even the baker from Katolis who makes the Jelly Tarts lends a hand.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Our heroes are able to win the day, but it's not a clean victory.
    • The good news is that the Sunfire Elves and the dragons manage to hold the Storm Spire long enough for Queen Aanya, Corvus, and Opeli to arrive with the army of Duren and the deserters from Katolis and route Viren's army. Rayla is able to prevent Viren from absorbing Zym's life force by tackling him off the peak, sending Viren to his death, while Callum manages to conjure wings and save Rayla, causing the couple to admit they love each other. With Viren dead, Saleer arrested, Claudia missing, and Soren renouncing his father, Ezran is hailed as the rightful King of Katolis by the victors. Finally, the presence of humans and elves working together—and who love such other—allow Zubeia to awaken and reunite with Zym.
    • The bad news is that hundreds of people are dead as a result of Viren's campaign into Xadia, including Queen Khessa and Prince Kasef, while the Sunforge has been corrupted, driving the Sunfire Elves from Lux Aurea. While Soren can finally see his father for who he really is, his relationship with Claudia is practically destroyed when he stabs the illusion of Viren she created, and she further binds herself to her father by raising Viren from the dead, with the implication that she killed an elf to do it. While humans and elves working together is a sign of hope, it's not going to erase a millennium of bitterness and hatred overnight. Finally, despite failing to drain Zym completely, Aaravos seems to have gotten enough of Zym's life force that his familiar enters a cocoon and begins changing.
  • Bloodless Carnage: Zigzagged; while there are more than a few on-screen casualties that show no blood (such as when Viren's army takes several arrow wounds), a few other moments show blood such as when Soren impales the fake Viren illusion, and blood can be seen on Viren's crown after he's revived by Claudia.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Viren knocks Bait into a wall and leaves Rayla trapped in ice, promising to make her into a coin. Even though Aaravos knocks the blades from her hands after Bait frees Rayla, she manages to tackle them off a cliff to save Zym.
  • The Cavalry: Twice.
    • Ezran arrives with a group of dragons, though subverted when it becomes clear that not only are the human soldiers immune to fire but strengthened by it.
    • The people who deserted from Viren's army, with Corvus, the baker and Opeli, had reached Aanya's kingdom and joined her army. She leads them into battle to save the heroes' side.
  • Climbing Climax: The Post-Climax Confrontation in which Zym gets chased to the top of the Storm Spire by Viren.
  • Combat, Diplomacy, Stealth: Callum, Ezran, and Rayla each help the heroes defeat Viren by ascribing to one of these paths. Callum focused on "Combat" (helping make the battle plans and guarding the Storm), Ezran focused on "Diplomacy" (helping bring allies to fight Viren's army), and Rayla focused on "Stealth" (snuck up to Viren to push them off the ledge when he was distracted).
  • Depth Deception: While tempting Viren with the prospect of godhood, Aaravos' astral projection floats in midair and poses so that it looks like he's a giant and leaning against the side of the Spire.
  • Die or Fly: Callum leaps from the top of the Spire to save Rayla, hoping that he can conjure mage wings before they hit the ground.
  • Disney Villain Death: Viren falls from the top of the Storm Spire and dies offscreen, with Claudia bringing him back soon after. Subverted when we see Viren in the epilogue having magically survived.
  • Double Meaning: Zubeia says that Zym's defenders brought back "my love, and my hope" we see first a shot of Zym and then a shot of the assembled elves and humans, respectively. In the center of the second shot is Callum, who signifies the hope that one day, humans could do the same magic elves can do.
  • The Dying Walk: After being fatally wounded by Aanya's arrows, Kasef walks a few steps away from Callum before falling over dead.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Once Rayla is disarmed, Viren and Aaravos turn their attention away from her. Both are such self-serving people, they never thought that she would be willing to throw herself and Viren off the cliff.
  • Fake Ultimate Mook: Despite their immunity to fire, Viren's soldiers do not seem to be more effective than the average soldier; this reaches the point that the baker can defeat them using a rolling pin.
  • The Final Battle: An aptly titled episode wherein a battle of epic proportions concludes the trilogy.
  • Flight of Romance: After admitting their love for each other, Rayla and Callum lovingly kiss as he flies them back up to the spire's summit while the music swells.
  • A God Am I: Viren is excited by the power surging into him from Zym.
  • Heel Realization: Soren apologizes to Callum for all his bullying.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Attempted as Rayla risks her own life pushing Viren off the spire's peak to save Zym, but subverted since Callum saves her once the duo is in freefall.
  • Hollywood Tactics: Averted. The defenders make use of a shield wall and fight to keep the line solid.
  • Hope Spot:
    • Zym trying to zip his mother awake seems like it could work. Until it doesn't.
    • Rayla and Bait distract Viren long enough for Zym to run. The dragon then gains the courage to dive off the cliff and fly. For a few moments, it seems he's escaped. Then Viren catches him in a magical cyclone and starts to drain his life force.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Though distraught with what he did, Soren had to kill his father to stop him from killing Ezran. Until he discovered he killed an illusion.
  • Instant Death Stab: Soren stabs his father in the torso who then collapses and dies within seconds. Subverted when it turns out that Viren was Actually a Doombot.
  • Instant Expert: Callum has trouble conjuring mage wings, but once he does it he is able to use his new wings for fancy acrobatics with no practice or training. Partially Justified, as Word of God indicated that Sky mages can magically enhance their movements and agility.
  • Irony:
    • While apologizing, Soren still pokes fun at Callum for being smaller, weaker and slower than he. At the end of the episode, Callum is able to give himself mage wings, making him bigger (counting his wingspan), stronger, and much, much faster than any ordinary human.
    • Two episodes ago, Callum flippantly dismissed the idea of telling the Dragon Queen that he and Rayla were a couple. In fact, love between humans and elves was exactly what Zubeia needed to see.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Prince Kasef-turned-Super-Soldier is so eager to go into battle that he runs headfirst onto the battlefield...mere moments after being told the armies will act on Viren's order.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Bait is at his best in this episode. He weaponized his glowing to distract Viren, recovers fast when the latter tosses him into a wall, and frees Rayla from her ice prison with the use of a torch. Rayla gushes over how wonderful he is.
  • Mama Bear: Much like her parents, Rayla does all she can to protect Zym. When disarmed, she pushes Viren off the cliff, dedicated to sacrificing her life to save the dragonling.
  • Moment Killer: Callum and Rayla have a moment early on at the top of the Storm Spire but Soren interrupts them.
  • Moral Myopia: Claudia had no qualms whatsoever about trying to murder Ezran with an illusion of Viren. Yet when Soren impaled the illusion on his sword, Claudia is outraged at such an act.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Viren is close to becoming all-powerful thanks to Zym's energy but then Rayla throws him and herself off the top.
  • Neck Lift: Kasef does this to Callum. Cue Queen Aanya coming to Callum's rescue with a Multishot of her bow.
  • Out of the Inferno: The moment after the dragons' fire bombardment when the fire soldiers emerge unharmed, even strengthened, from the flames.
  • Post-Climax Confrontation: After the big battle at the feet of the Storm Spire is finished and won, a confrontation between Claudia, Soren and Ezran reveals that Viren is still on the loose. Cut to a final battle between Rayla and Callum against Viren and Aaravos at the top of the Spire, where Viren tries to absorb Zym's life force.
  • The Power of Love:
    • Callum has trouble conjuring mage wings, but when he admits he loves Rayla, he finds the focus to use it properly.
    • One of the things that heal Zubeia is the presence of humans and elves who love each other.
  • Pupating Peril: The epilogue shows that Aaravos's caterpillar has built a huge cocoon, which he will presumably emerge from in the coming season.
  • Rain of Arrows: Queen Aanya's Big Damn Heroes moment is complete with a flurry of arrows to take down Viren's forces.
  • Red Is Heroic: Callum's most prominent color is blue, the color of intellectual heroes. Naturally, he is on the sidelines during the final battle and helps from a relatively safe distance. After he jumps off the cliff to save Rayla, he grows wings that tear his jacket off, leaving only red.
  • Rescue Romance: Callum and Rayla finally admit their love for one another after Callum saves Rayla by diving off a cliff to catch her.
  • Secret Test of Character: In a twisted version, Claudia conjures a dangerously solid illusion of Viren to ambush Ezran in the aftermath of the battle at the base of the Spire largely to see if her brother Soren has truly abandoned loyalty to their family. Soren attempts to demand a surrender, but in the end thrusts his sword through his "father's" chest rather than permit the skewering of (among much else) a helpless ten-year-old boy.
  • Sequel Hook: Zym's mother finally awakens, surprised and overjoyed that her child is alive and well, as well as the sight of humans and elves rallying together after years of conflict, implying a brighter future. However, the episode ends with Claudia resurrecting her father from the dead, and revealing that Aaravos's familiar is now in a cocoon.
  • Series Fauxnale: The show's crew clearly had no idea whether they'd get another season, and so did their best to create a workable ending for the story while still leaving a couple of doors open for more. The series' goal of getting Zym to his mother is fulfilled and peace is restored between the Human Kingdoms and Xadia with the promise of better relations in the future, but Viren, Claudia, and Aaravos are still out there and there's a hint that Aaravos' true plan may have just begun.
  • Shell-Shock Silence: After Claudia's magic bomb goes off on the battlefield, the sound drowns out for a moment as everyone is shaken by the detonation.
  • The Siege: The heroes' objective is to hold the Spire and protect Zym.
  • Symbolism: Callum always carries his "inseparable" sketchbook, which represents his sheltered life in Katolis as well as his identity as a bookish artist. Usually, rather than getting into the action, he's seen sketching instead. In the finale, Callum throws it down and leaps off the pinnacle to save Rayla. After this moment, we never see the sketchbook around him again, symbolizing how Callum is no longer the boy he used to be.
  • Thwarted Coup de GrĂ¢ce: Viren is about the kill Ezran with a sword strike but Soren intervenes.
  • Traveling at the Speed of Plot: It took days for Rayla and Callum to reach the Storm Spire, and even then they needed Nyx's help to cross the Midnight Desert, or it would've taken even longer. But here The Cavalry arrives to save them in just one day, with no explanation of how they made the trip so fast.
    • Then again, it makes a certain amount of sense that they weren't far behind Viren's forces since Viren took a detour to and made a stop at Lux Aurea. As for how Viren got there so fast, it's not actually stated just how long everyone was at the Spire before the attack. It could've been days before Soren showed up for all we know. Supplementary material also shows that it's a much more direct route (and one that avoids the Midnight Desert) from the Breach to the Storm Spire than when taking the secret moonstone path into Xadia.
  • Variable Terminal Velocity: It actually makes sense for Callum to catch up to and rescue Rayla since he at first is falling headfirst through the air and later is able to execute a magically enhanced power dive which enables him to go much faster than any ordinary person could. What makes less sense is why Viren is falling so much faster than Rayla, given that they went off the cliff at the same time and his flowing robes ought to provide more air resistance than Rayla's skin-tight getup, if anything.
  • Violence Really Is the Answer: Ezran had tried to settle things without the need for conflict. Here, he decides to rally dragons and outside help to drive away Viren's forces, learning that some conflicts are unavoidable.
  • Wham Episode: The Queen awakens to meet her son, and to see a group of humans and elves working together to keep him safe. Rayla kills Viren by throwing both herself and him off the Storm Spire, and Callum learns to fly to save her, but Claudia resurrects Viren using dark magic, and Aaravos's familiar is now in a cocoon, transforming into something else.
  • Winged Humanoid: Callum conjures mage wings, allowing him to turn his arms into wings so he can save Rayla.
  • You Are Too Late: Said by Viren to Rayla when she reaches the top of the Spire after Viren has already drained most of Zym's power out of him.
  • You Will Not Evade Me: Viren pulling Zym back when the latter tries to escape by flying off from the top of the Spire.
