Recap / TPF: Louder and Prouder S2 E3 "Curved"

Go To

Penny is preparing for her and Dijonay's friend-iversary. At the same time, she’s also on the debate team with Maya, Myron, and Zoey. However, Zoey has lost her voice and a new debate team member is randomly chosen, who turns out to be Dijonay. No one thinks she is up to the task, but to their astonishment, Dijonay is revealed to have an eidetic memory and is able to help the team win the debate. She soon meets Darrius St. Vil, another debate member, and begins to spend more time with him.

Tropes:

  • The Ace: Darius. He's smart, good-looking, and a teenage pilot.
  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: Dijonay becomes hoity-toity after helping the debate team win the semi-finals and getting Darius' attention.
  • Against My Religion: Implied when Penny offers Brother Kwame one of the two bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches she bought on the way to school. He turns it down because “I don’t eat swine”. The fact that he emphasized pork in that statement indicates he practices a religion that bans pork products, but what religion it is isn’t specified.
  • Animation Bump: Some of the animation in this episode is a lot smoother with moments of frame-by-frame animation.
  • Asian and Nerdy: Referenced when Penny tries to get the Chang triplets to join the debate team. They all refuse.
Debbie: You can take your model minority myth somewhere else.
Penny: Model minority myth?!? What does that mean?
Zoey: I think she just called you a racist, Penny.
  • Asleep in Class: Unsurprisingly, Dijonay does this until she is woken up and forcibly placed onto the debate team.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Darius makes the mistake of insulting Dijonay's siblings, prompting an angry Dijonay to beat him up.
  • Breaking Old Trends: None of the other Prouds aside from Penny appear in this episode, a first for the show.
  • The Bus Came Back: This episode marks the return of Omar Phillips and the Chang Triplets (who look different and are now individualized).
  • Catching Some Z's: There is a trail of Zs when Dijonay is sleeping in class.
  • Celebrity Paradox: Brother Kwame jokes that last week Dijonay's Waking Non Sequitur was that he was Leslie Odom Jr., who of course, is his voice actor.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: During the reparations debate, Myron mentions the Illuminati and the New World Order before Maya covers his mouth.
  • Divergent Character Evolution: The Chang triplets all gain their own personalities (and in the case of Billy and Julie, new voices). In particular, Julie is revealed to play soccer and Debbie is a DJ.
  • Easily Forgiven: Dijonay easily forgives Darius for what he did, saying that everyone deserves a second chance.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Maya agrees with Penny's claim that black people can't be racist, but she also agrees that it was a jerk move of Penny to promote the model minority myth.
  • Forehead of Doom: Dijonay and Darius laugh at Penny's fivehead.
  • Forgotten Anniversary: Dijonay forgot her and Penny's friendaversary, proving that she really doesn't have an eidetic memory.
  • Gratuitous French: Darius speaks French to seduce Dijonay. He says: "Si ca pa déranger, échange ideé avec tu?"Translation
  • Green Around the Gills: Myron's face turns green before he vomits.
  • Group Hug: The debate team engages in one after receiving applause for their reparations argument.
  • Hidden Depths: Dijonay shocks everyone when she perfectly recites the debate team's counterargument to dependence on social media after only glancing at the entire folder. She says it's because, unlike her parents, she actually bothers to remember the birthdays of all her siblings. In spite of this, she still forgets her friendaversary with Penny every year.
  • Hologram: Using Lebron James' chalk toss, Myron creates a hologram showing Darius taking pictures of the debate team's research.
  • Huddle Shot: Done when Penny and Maya worry about what to do after Myron left. Penny says that the team has nobody, but Dijonay won't be any help.
Dijonay: Guys, I'm in the huddle.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Dijonay concludes her speech about personal interaction being better than online social media with "In closing: social media is bad, hanging out is good! Follow me on Hologram if you agree! #Dijoslay!"
  • I Kiss Your Hand: Darius does this to Dijonay.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Penny yells this when Dijonay and Darius make fun of her forehead.
  • Lost Voice Plot: Zoey loses her voice, so someone has to take her place for the debate team's semi-finals.
  • Love-Interest Traitor: Darius was actually using Dijonay all along so he could get access to the debate team's materials.
  • The Millstone: Penny's issue with Dijonay being on the team is because she’s not known for being very bright or very good at paying attention, and it will cost them.
  • Mistaken for Racist: When Penny is trying to convince the Chang Triplets to join the debate team, they all refuse, with Debbie telling Penny to take her “model minority myth” somewhere else.
Penny: Model minority myth? What does that mean?
Zoey: I think she just called you a racist, Penny.
Penny: Black people can’t be racist!
Maya: I agree; racism is prejudice plus power. But we can be jerks, I give you that.
  • Performance Anxiety: Myron panics when he's on stage for the debate, then runs off to vomit.
  • Photographic Memory: Maya speculates that Dijonay has an eidetic memory, since she stated the debate team's argument word for word just by flipping through the book. This turns out to be false.
  • Secret Handshake: Dijonay seems to be under the impression that the debate team has a secret handshake. Myron is disappointed when nobody will teach him it.
  • Self-Deprecation: The Chang triplets refusing to join the debate team and putting down the model minority myth could be a stab at the fact that the original series played the Asian and Nerdy trope very straight and uncritically.
  • Shave And A Haircut: Brother Kwame wakes Dijonay up to the beat of "Shave and A Haircut", though he doesn’t get to "two bits".
  • Shout-Out:
    • No one wants to join Penny's debate team, but Penny points out that they debate on things like the color of a dress.
    • There is a reference to the "OHHHH!" scene from the viral video The Rap Battle (PARODY).
  • Spaghetti Kiss: Darius and Dijonay almost do this.
  • Stop Being Stereotypical: Debbie refuses to be part of Penny's debate team on the grounds of wanting to avoid the "model minority myth."
  • Sweetie Graffiti: Darius writes "D + D" in the sky with his plane.
  • Waking Non Sequitur: Dijonay is sleeping in class. When she wakes up, she says "Yes, Michael B. Jordan, I'll marry you!"
  • You Don't Look Like You: The Chang triplets look almost nothing like their original selves. They don't even use the same color scheme, except for Debbie, who still wears red.
