Recap / Supergirl 2015 S 6 E 18 Truth Or Consequences

Go To

Supergirl and the others finally find out where Lex and Nyxly are hiding, and head out to take back the Totems. Meanwhile, Nyxly finds the Truth Totem and uses it to confirm whether Lex is sincere in his love for her. Elsewhere, William is in hot water over something Andrea did, Alex is having a hard time coming to grips with how to raise Esme, and Brainy finds out he has to return to the 31st Century.

Tropes:

  • Almost Kiss: Villainous version between Nyxly and Lex. They get distracted by the glowing Love Totem.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: During her call with Lena, when the latter berates Andrea for leaking Lex's journal just to gain fame, she initially denies it, but when Lena asks her why she did it, Andrea has no answer.
  • Beam-O-War: Between Kara, Nyxly and Lex.
  • The Bus Came Back: The more logical, cold Brainy from an alternate universe comes back.
  • Butt-Monkey: Wearing a Lexosuit, Mitch disables J'onn with an energy blast and then smarts off about how easy it was. J'onn regroups and absolutely trashes the Lexosuit, leaving Mitch unconscious. Shortly after that, the self-destruct system destroys Mitch's ship. And finally, an irritated Lex cuts off Mitch's musings and tells him to restock the fridge.
  • Character Death: William is shot and killed by Lex at the end of the episode.
  • Courtly Love: Lex actually wrote several poems for Nyxly, which are leaked by Andrea.
  • Dead Man Writing: William sets up his phone to record the conversation between himself and Lex when he is being held hostage. After he gets shot however, William sends the video message to Andrea as proof of Lex's crimes.
  • Defiant to the End: William tells Lex off, even with a gun in his face.
  • Dies Wide Open: William dies with open eyes.
  • Downer Ending: The episode ends with Nyxly having kidnapped Esme from beneath the Superfriends' noses and Lex murdering William.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Initially, the Superfriends think that the tattoo on Esme's back is just her unknowingly copying the powers of the Tattamite in her class.
  • Extremely Short Timespan: Alex makes mention of not seeing the rose tattoo when they were giving Esme a bath the previous night. Given there's been no indication the tattoo appears and disappears intermittently, this seems to indicate the bachlorette party takes place literally the day after Alex and Kelly proposed to each other.
  • Evil Is Petty: Lex shoots and kills William as revenge for his journal being leaked to the press.
  • The Ghost: Brainy has a call with Winn, but the latter doesn't appear in person.
  • Heroic BSoD: Brainy enters this when he is told he must return to the 31st Century to merge with the Big Brain. Nia does too when she finds out and cannot simply live in the future with him.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: William tries to hide Esme from Lex and Nyxly under the threat of death, but unfortunately, they still manage to find her.
  • Hidden Depths: William bonds with Esme by telling her his auntie's recipe, which helps her win the baker contest.
  • I Am a Monster: Andrea, after William's speech to her.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Nyxly admits this to herself that she just wants somebody by her side who won't betray her.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Nyxly finds out Lex really does love her and isn't trying to trick her.
    • Everyone eventually figures out Esme absorbed the Love Totem's energy.
    • The Superfriends realize that the Hope and Love Totems are still around.
  • Invasion of the Baby Snatchers: Lex and Nyxly break into the Tower and kidnap Esme while the Superfriends are off celebrating Alex and Kelly's engagement party. By the time they get the alert on her blood tests and realize that Esme is the Love Totem, Nyxly is long gone with their daughter.
  • Mama Bear: Alex gets into a dispute with Kara when the latter advises her to put a power dampener on Esme, which Alex thinks of as an unasked for parenting advice. They do make up again though.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Andrea at the end of the episode when she receives the video of William being shot by Lex for supposedly being the one to leak his journal to the media.
  • Mythology Gag: Nia wanting to just live in the 31st Century in order to stay with Brainy is exactly what the Justice League version of Supergirl did in the Unlimited seasons.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Andrea leaking Lex's journals to the press under William's name directly led to Lex killing William.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: In-universe. A TV presenter dubs Lex and Nyxly "Lexly".
  • Power Incontinence: When getting picked on in school, Esme's powers have a minor freak out.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: William lays one into Andrea when he confronts her for putting Lex's journal on the news.
William: I became a journalist to tell real stories, to report the truth. Your "ends justify the means" excuse makes you just as bad as Lex. You both have no ethical code. I was hoping that you'd wield CatCo's power and influence for good, but instead, your pathological obsession to be number one made you selfish and shortsighted. What's important is what you stand for, what you contribute to make the world a better place. And you, Andrea Rojas, stand for nothing.
  • The Reveal:
    • Otis talking to William about planning to build an army of Lexosuits last episode was an intentional ploy by Lex.
    • Lex exploited his sister's tracking scans to piggyback a trojan into the Tower's computer systems, preventing the disclosure of Esme's blood test results until after Lex and Nyxly had completed their raid on the Tower.
    • Brainy has to return to the 31st Century and rejoin his people, or the Coluan race is finished.
  • Shout-Out: Nia tells Brainy at the party that "Tonight's not the night to be Debbie Downer".
  • Talking to Themself: When Brainy is angsting over returning to his home and rejoining his race, he manifests one of the alternate universe versions of himself to argue with.
