Recap / Star Wars: The Bad Batch S1E9 "Bounty Lost"

Go To

The Bad Batch attempt to find Omega, while Omega searches for a way to escape Cad Bane.

Tropes:

  • Abandoned Laboratory: Cad Bane's rendezvous point is at an abandoned Kaminoan facility in the Lido system. At its heart is a room full of vats containing mysterious humanoids and malformed specimens.
  • Action Prologue: The episode begins with the Bad Batch being chased down by Crosshair and a clone piloting an Imperial Nu-class attack/transport shuttle while Hunter frantically asks where Omega and Cad Bane are, with Echo telling him that Bane is long gone.
  • Artistic License – Biology: Omega is revealed to be an unmodified clone of Jango Fett. If this were literally true, she should be Boba Fett's twinnote  brother (and likewise, a brunette). The episode seems to treat "unmodified", in this context, as lacking the Rapid Aging of the clones, even though Omega clearly had her genetic code modified somehow to switch her gender.
    • An alternative is that her genes are unmodified, but she experienced hormone treatments in embryo to alter her development for some reason.
  • Briefcase Full of Money: Shand takes the case of unmarked cred sticks Taun We was going to pay Bane with and suggests trading it for Omega. Todo grabs it before they can trade, resulting in a firefight. The briefcase ends up being spilled when Shand kicks a thermal detonator in Todo's direction.
  • Bilingual Bonus: For the spectators who watched the French version. The title was translated into Qui va à la chasse... (literally "Who goes hunting..."). This is the first half of "Qui va à la chasse perd sa place" ("Who goes hunting loses his place"), an adage saying that who leaves his place must expect to find it occupied when he returns. If the meaning of the saying in French does not seem to have a special link with the episode, it may be noted that the original title is "Bounty Lost". That's right, put the French title and the English title together creates a parody of the French saying.
  • Body Horror: While the Kaminoan-like creature seems to be fully-formed, the various other specimens in the embryo room range from being malformed but vaguely humanoid to just being grotesque lumps of flesh with random assortments of body parts.
  • Call-Back: Echo mentions Cad Bane's exploits during the Clone Wars, such as multiple run-ins with the Jedi note  and the plot to kidnap Palpatine.
  • Cassandra Truth: Shand tries to convince Omega that she's trying to protect her, but Omega doesn't buy it and manages to escape. The end of the episode reveals that Shand was telling the truth, as she was hired to keep Omega away from Kamino to protect her.
  • Character Death: Taun We is killed by Fennec Shand to keep We from taking Omega to Kamino, where she would be forcibly euthanized.
  • Cool vs. Awesome: We're given the treat of two beloved badass characters from previous shows in the franchise going up against each other, ending up mostly in a draw.
  • The Determinator: in the previous episode, it took nearly fatal wounds to stop Crosshair. And at the beginning of this episode, he starts to hunt his brothers immediately after his condition was stabilized, while suffering several serious injuries.
  • Grenade Hot Potato: Bane tries to toss a thermal detonator at Shand. She kicks it out the nearby window, right into Todo and the briefcase full of credits.
  • Hostage for MacGuffin: Shand offers the payment she stole from Taun We in exchange for Omega. Bane stalls for time until Todo can sneak up and grab the case, leading to a shoot-out.
  • Humanoid Abomination: The room in the heart of the facility contains vats holding all sorts of malformed creatures. One of them has some sort of humanoid creature that vaguely resembles a mix of Snoke and a Kaminoan, which Omega cracks open so that the creature's corpse falls on top of Fennec and slows her down.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • The Bad Batch learn who Cad Bane is.
    • Omega and the Bad Batch learn why the Kaminoans want her: she's a first generation clone of Jango Fett.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Fennec Shand and Nala Se end up being this to Cad Bane and Lama Su, as the former two want her alive while going with the latter two would result in her death once they get the DNA samples they need from her.
  • Living MacGuffin: Omega and Boba Fett are the only two direct clones of Jango Fett (that is, clones with no modifications), and thus the only means the Kaminoans have of refreshing the genetic stock for their clones. Since Boba is in the wind, they're targeting Omega.
  • Mama Bear: Nala Se has developed this mindset in regards to Omega, showing that she is willing to go behind Lama Su's back to ensure that Omega stays safe.
  • Mythology Gag: Boba Fett is stated to have been codenamed "Alpha" before Jango named him. The Alpha-Class ARC troopers in Legends were among the first clones created for the Grand Army of the Republic, received far less genetic modification than the standard clone trooper, and they were trained by Jango Fett personally. Much like Boba, many of them actually deserted the GAR and became Mandalorian bounty hunters.
  • Out of Focus: The Bad Batch themselves only appear at the beginning and end of the episode, with the rest focusing on Omega.
  • Ragnarök Proofing: The abandoned cloning facility still has power, a semi-functional communications array and its flight pods still work, albeit briefly.
  • The Reveal:
    • Omega is a direct clone of Jango Fett, effectively making her Boba Fett's sister. This is why the Kaminoans want her, since they can extract a fresh stock sample from her.
    • Fennec Shand is working for Nala Se directly, and Nala Se is willing to sabotage Lama Su's plans in order to keep Omega safe.
  • Schrödinger's Canon: When Cad Bane removes his hat to introduce himself to Omega, he's shown to have a metal plate on his head, which implies he may have already had his showdown with Boba and survived.
  • Sound-Only Death: Taun We is killed by Fennec offscreen, with the only indication being the sound of a single gunshot before Cad Bane finds her corpse.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Omega manages to get to one of the flight pods at the abandoned Kaminoan cloning facility and is able to take off, but only briefly. The engine soon fails due to the pod having sat unmaintained for what appears to be decades.
  • Took a Level in Badass: While she's absolutely no match for Shand or Bane, Omega's time with the Bad Batch has clearly taught her a few things. She is able to nearly escape several times, and even manages to surprise Shand by dropping a cloning tank on her.
  • Villainous Rescue: Fennec Shand shows up to rescue Omega from Cad Bane, because she is actually working for Nala Se to keep Omega alive, in defiance of Lama Su's orders.
  • We Win, Because You Didn't: Bane and Shand both fail to capture Omega, but Shand is still paid because her job was merely to prevent Omega from coming to harm, a condition fulfilled by allowing the Batch to rescue her.
  • The Worf Effect: The Clone Wars establishes Cad Bane as one of the galaxy's premiere bounty hunters, able to go head to head with Jedi such as Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker, and Obi-Wan Kenobi and Quinlan Vos working together. Here he is bested one-on-one by a young version of Fennec Shand from The Mandalorian, though the fight remains pretty evenly matched throughout and Shand only wins by making sure Bane can't pursue either her or Omega.
  • Worthy Opponent: Played With. When he meets Shand, Bane courteously tips his hat to her, but quickly condescends her stating she’s too inexperienced to face him one-on-one, simultaneously implying he may have enough respect for the up-and-coming bounty hunter to let her leave and keep her career going. As the fight goes on, however, Bane grows increasingly frustrated and agitated as Shand proves crafty and strong enough to make him really work for the stalemate he ultimately leaves with.
  • Would Hurt a Child:
    • Cad Bane once again, who says that Omega is lucky that the Kaminoans want her alive after she tries to escape.
    • Lama Su as well, who orders Omega to be terminated once they extract sufficient genetic material from her.
  • Years Too Early: Bane warns Shand as such. The ensuing fight proves otherwise, as she manages to fight Bane to a standstill.
Bane: You lack the experience to be going up against me.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: A pre-emptive example. Lama Su orders Omega to be terminated once Nala Se has taken the samples she needs. This convinces Nala Se to sabotage his plans so that Omega remains safe, even if it undermines their position with the Empire.
