Recap / Star Wars: The Bad Batch S1E10 "Common Ground"

Go To

The Bad Batch have to rescue a Separatist senator that refuses to bow to the new Empire.

Tropes:

  • Action Politician: Surprisingly, not Senator Singh, who is a Distressed Dude during most of the episode, though he does knock out a clone using a vase. It's actually GS-8, his diplomatic secretary droid with no fighting or military programming, who participates in the rescue mission and proves an able distraction at times, though unwillingly at first.
Echo: [stopping GS-8 as she was starting to explain why Avi Singh was arrested] We don't care.
Hunter: Just take us where the senator's being held.
GS-8: Right to it. I like you.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Turns out Omega is so good at analyzing people that she's a natural at dejarik and can pay off Batch 99's debts.
  • Badass Bookworm: Tech proves he's a giant fucking nerd, but he's still a goddamn clone trooper when a reg has him dead to rights and Senator Singh hits the reg in the head with a vase. Tech shoots the reg and his companion with a stun blast point blank, no doubt.
  • Badass Boast: Hunter challenges Omega to a game of dejarik; if she wins, no more sitting out on missions.
Hunter: Are you ready for this?
    Omega: Are you?
  • Big Damn Heroes: Hunter and Tech show up to rescue Senator Singh right as Captain Bragg is about sic her interrogation droid on him.
  • Call-Back:
  • Chekhov's Gun: The antique vase GS-8 manages to save comes in handy as an improvised weapon during Senator Singh's escape.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: The IT-0 Interrogation Units make their chronological debut here, though it's stunned before it could lay a needle in Senator Avi Singh.
  • Cool Old Guy: Senator Avi Singh. He's clearly popular amongst his citizens, has enough backbone to stand up to the Empire and helps the Bad Batch escape Raxus once they've been cornered by Imperial troops.
  • Cutting the Knot: After seeing Omega's strategic ability in action, Cid has her take part in a series of games where they can split the winnings from unsuspecting customers. By the time her friends come back from their mission, Cid announces that Omega has made enough to clear out their debt. This would imply that it was paid off faster there than the previous tasks Cid sent the Batch out for.
  • Defiant Captive: Senator Singh was arrested because he refused to collaborate with the Empire. Even locked in a basement and about to be tortured, he still refuses to cooperate.
  • Distressed Dude: The main plot of the episode is about saving Avi Singh.
  • Enemy Mine: The Bad Batch find themselves rescuing a Separatist senator. Echo in particular is none too thrilled about this and goes in expecting a trap. Played with in that the Clone Wars are over, the Republic nor the Separatists exist under their forms they had during this war, and the Bad Batch is only doing it for the money, not in opposition to the Empire. Even the alliance with GS-8 is played with: it's a Separatist droid, but not a military one.
  • Fantastic Racism: The Bad Batch are none too happy about working for a droid. To a lesser extent, they don't like the idea of rescuing a Separatist senator, especially Echo, though they don't let it interfere with the mission.
  • A Father to His Men: Senator Singh cares a great deal about his people and doesn't like the idea of leaving Raxus to the point where he's tempted to stay to help them fight the occupation.
  • Fighting Your Friend: Throughout the episode, the Bad Batch uses only nonlethal force against the Brainwashed clones, refusing to harm their mind controlled brothers.
  • Freudian Slip: During the mission, Hunter tells Tech and Omega to loop to the other side of a corridor. Tech reminds him that he ordered Omega to stay with Cid, given the potential risk of said mission and the likelihood of Bane and Shand still being after her.
  • A Glass of Chianti: Imperial officer Captain Bragg interrogates Senator Avi Singh in what appears to be his wine cellar, and sips some wine from her cup while interrogating him.
  • If I Do Not Return: Senator Avi Singh orders his droid GS-8 to send a message for rescue if his announcement doesn't go as planned.
  • Instant Expert: Omega turns out to be a natural strategist, winning enough through bets on Dejarik to completely pay off their debt to Cid.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Singh is reluctant to abandon his people to the tyranny of the Empire, but Echo and GS-8 convince him he can serve them better as a free exile than a captive citizen.
  • Loved by All: Senator Avi Singh is very well-loved by the people of Raxus. The Empire attempted to exploit this by having him endorse their occupation, and there's every indication it would have worked had he not been too principled to agree.
  • Pet the Dog: Cid isn't happy about having to watch Omega and doesn't mince words about it, but she warms up to the kid once Omega proves herself good at hustling others in Dejarik, and a capable haggler to boot. Cid even admonishes Hunter for getting on Omega's case about a crowd, since her skills paid off their debt.
  • Priceless Ming Vase: GS-8 narrowly saves a vase during a shootout, and chides the Batch that it's a precious token of the people's love for Singh. Shortly afterward, Singh himself shatters it to knock out a Clone Stormtrooper, and says he never liked it.
  • Throwing Out the Script: Singh is supposed to help toe the Imperial line so his people stop rebelling, but his conscience won't let him and he instead further riles up his people against the Empire's oppression.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Omega recognizes Cid is offering her a shit deal at 30% of her winnings at Dejarik and demands 60% instead.
  • Vehicular Turnabout: The Bad Batch hijack an Imperial AT-TE walker to make their escape.
  • Villain of the Week: Captain Bragg is the Imperial villain the Bad Batch have to face to rescue Senator Singh.
  • We Need a Distraction: Hunter pushes GS-8 out of cover so the two door guards will notice and pursue her, at which point she runs back into the bushes where the Batch is lying in ambush. GS-8 later does this of her own volition to distract a pair of guards so Hunter can hit them with a stun grenade.
