The Nitwitting

Original air date: 1/13/2019 (produced in 2018)

SpongeBob joins Patrick's society of idiots and helps them do "community service."

"The Nitwitting" contains examples of:

  • Bigger on the Inside: The Empty Head Society clubhouse.
  • Call-Back: The Ice Cream King from "Patrick's Coupon" returns as a supporting character.
  • Camera Abuse: At the end while the Empty Head Society is singing their anthem, Patrick drives a small boat past them and ends up smashing into the camera, cracking the lens.
  • Continuity Nod: Larry is seen drinking a Kelp Shake from "Best Frenemies."
    • The "Squidward smells" graffiti from "Sailor Mouth" and "Mall Girl Pearl" can be seen.
    • Graffiti of DoodleBob can be seen in the corner of a building.
    • I'M DIRTY DAN spelled "I'M DIRTY DAH" can be seen graffitied on the wall.
  • The Ditz: In this episode, we see an entire community of them.
  • Everyone Has Standards: SpongeBob drinking the jar of spit is so gross that the other members are disgusted, and the Ice Cream King even says it's "so stupid" that it earns him a badge.
  • Funny Background Event: When the Ice Cream King puts the jar of spit on the shelf, you can see that every jar in the background is labeled "Today."
  • Fun with Acronyms: Sandy is part of a club called F.E.M.A. (Fix the Emptyheads' Mess Again).
  • Handbag of Hurt: When SpongeBob becomes as dumb as the rest of the Empty Heads without his brain, he tries asking a pedestrian for directions, and those results come out pretty self-explanatory:
SpongeBob (lisping): Excuse me, large lady, I'm a widdle girl who's misplaced herself. Can you help find me? I'm pretty!
Pedestrian: Weirdo! (smacks SpongeBob with her purse and runs away)
  • Hypocritical Humor: A fish mocks a moronic SpongeBob by saying "Obviously not the sharpest tool in the...tool thing"
  • Kilroy Was Here: Graffiti can be seen on the wall reading "Man Ray was here."
  • Self-Botched Catchphrase: After burning out his brain, SpongeBob is unable to say "I'm ready" correctly.
  • Special Guest: Peter Browngardt returns as the Ice Cream King.
  • Title Drop: "The Nitwitting" is the title of the episode, as well as the community service event that the Empty Head Society does. It's dropped twice:
SpongeBob: Uh, we're gonna do some civic duty?
Patrick: We call it... The Nitwitting!

SpongeBob: Patrick, I know you and the Empty Head Society mean well, but man, we sure messed up a lot of things in town today. So, I'm gonna reverse all the damage that we did during The Nitwitting!

The Ballad of Filthy Muck

Original air date: 1/20/2019 (produced in 2018)

Patrick makes a vow to be as stinky as possible, becoming so dirty that he becomes totally unrecognizable and is seen as a new cryptid. SpongeBob decides to join in and help clean up Patrick before he becomes the target of an angry cleaning mob.

"The Ballad of Filthy Muck" contains examples of:

  • Angry Mob: Everyone in Bikini Bottom forms one when they get tired of SpongeBob and Patrick's stench.
  • Call-Back: Rube from "No Pictures Please" returns, even saying his catchphrase again.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • In the newspaper, there is an ad for the Krusty Krab, which reads, "Come spend your money here." The same slogan from "As Seen On TV."
    • At Glove World, there is a sign for ice-cream that says "glove flavor," which was the flavor of the Glove World candy that SpongeBob ate and disliked in "Rock Bottom."
  • Foreshadowing: One major hint that Filthy Muck isn't really Patrick is that, during the entire time that FM spends with SpongeBob, he never says a single word.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: In the newspaper, one of the articles reads: ARSONIST AT LARGE! "How can this logically happen when we're underwater?"
  • Identical Stranger: It turns out that Filthy Muck and Patrick are two separate individuals.
  • Iris Out: The episode ends on one with Rube taking a picture with Filthy Muck.
  • List Song: "The Ballad of Filthy Muck Song" lists disgusting things.
  • Real After All: Filthy Muck turns out to be a completely separate entity from Patrick.
  • Red Herring: At first glance once Patrick sees the dump, it appears he messed around in the trash for so long he's become unrecognizable as Filthy Muck. But then it turns out Filthy Muck is a separate creature, and Patrick decided to avoid the dump and went home to take a bath.
  • Running Gag: Old Man Jenkins telling SpongeBob and Patrick that he's not bothered by their smell.
  • Torches and Pitchforks: The angry mob has these. The torches go out when they follow SpongeBob and Filthy Muck into a carwash and have to stop and relight the torches.
  • Wingding Eyes: At the beginning of the episode, Patrick's eyes turn into trash cans.
