Whitney returns to Smallville, throwing a wrench into Clark and Lana's deepening relationship, but not all is what is seems. Lex confronts Helen with evidence that she met with Lionel.

Tropes present in the episode:

  • Animate Inanimate Object: After Clark, weakened by Lana's Kryptonite necklace, is trapped in the storm cellar by Tina, his spaceship activates and emits a burst of energy that neutralizes the radiation, saving him.
  • Back for the Dead: Tina Greer returns in this episode, only to die by the end.
  • Batter Up!: Tina!Whitney beats the Marine lieutenant to death with a baseball bat.
  • Big "NO!": Clark screams one out after Tina assumes his form so she can seduce Lana and leaves him in the Kents' storm cellar, weakened by Lana's Kryptonite necklace.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Tina tells Mrs. Fordman to shut up as she won't stop crying.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Tina is dead, Lana is safe and Lex and Helen have reconciled, but the real Whitney has died in combat, Clark feels guilty, and Lana is heartbroken over his death as well as everyone leaving her (her parents, her aunt Nell, ect.) but Clark consoles her and they have repaired their friendship.
  • Bury Your Gays: Tina is killed trying to kill Clark over her love for Lana.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Tina, with regard to Lana. An unusual example, too, since she poses as Whitney for most of the episode.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: Tina is revealed to be impersonating Whitney. It later turns out that the real Whitney died in combat.
  • Death Glare: Lex gives Helen one before confronting her about meeting with his father.
  • Discount Lesbians: Tina trying to get intimate with Lana. But since she's in the guise of many people (Whitney, Chloe, Clark), it doesn't count.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Lana gets distracted seeing Clark in a soaked wet t-shirt for a few minutes.
  • Downer Beginning: Whitney gets killed in combat trying to save another Marine.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Lana ogles Clark's wet-shirt for a few minutes.
  • Evil Is Hammy: Tina as Clark, especially when shouting "WHY WON'T YOU JUST DIE?!"
  • Faking the Dead: Tina Greer pulled this so she could escape from the mental hospital she was sent to after the events of Season 1's "X-Ray."
  • Fanservice: Clark in a wet t-shirt after trying to fix a leaky pipe.
  • Gender Bender: Tina assumes Whitney's form to try and get with Lana. She also shifts into Jonathan's form to trick Clark and later assumes Clark's form so she can be with Lana, convinced Lana has feelings for Clark.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: When Tina!Whitney is (almost) exposed by a Marine lieutenant who shows up to inform Mrs. Fordman that the real Whitney died in combat, Tina!Whitney bludgeons the guy to dead with a baseball bat. His death is never explicitly shown; we only see Tina!Whitney covered in blood and Mrs. Fordman screaming.
  • Hard Head: Tina, in Lana's form, throws Pete across the school hallway and he hits his head on a locker. Two episodes later, he's back helping Clark.
  • It's All About Me: After "Whitney's" return, Clark complains to his parents about how he and Lana were getting closer and how Whitney coming back messes everything up. Jonathan immediately calls him on it.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Psycho Lesbian Tina is in love with Lana who is straight and has feelings for Clark.
  • Kick the Dog: Lionel met with Helen and asked her to leave Lex in exchange for a large sum of money. When Helen refused, he wired the money to her bank account anyway; this, naturally, causes tension in her and Lex's relationship.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: Tina Greer, who is very feminine and often mistaken for Lana.
  • Modesty Towel: Lana, after getting out of the shower.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Lana is not only devastated to learn that Whitney was killed in battle, but believes that Whitney thinks she didn't want him back when she sent the "Dear John" video. She tells Clark at the end that she never should have sent it. What she doesn't know is that, in the Smallville comics, Whitney wrote a letter about how he accepted the break-up and hopes Lana will make something of her life; sadly, the letter was with him when he was killed and likely destroyed.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Tina!Chloe does this to Lana, followed by Perverted Sniffing.
  • Perverted Sniffing: Tina sniffs a piece of Lana's clothing, then, after taking on Chloe's form, she walks up to Lana (who just got out of the shower) and sniffs her hair, making Lana very uncomfortable.
  • Plot Device: While Clark's trapped in the storm cellar and weakened by Lana's Kryptonite necklace, his spaceship activates and unleashes a burst of energy that eliminates the Kryptonite radiation, saving Clark.
  • Psycho Lesbian: Tina, who realized she's actually in love with Lana.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Helen gives one to Lex after he interrogates her about meeting with Lionel.
Lex: So tell me—why does a Harvard-educated physician, a woman of supposed integrity, accept a six-figure sum to spy on a man she claims to have feelings for?
Helen: First of all, I don't recall claiming anything of the sort. And second of all, if you think I'm gonna put up with your pathetic, paranoid attempts at invading my privacy, you're even more arrogant than everyone said you were.
  • Red Right Hand: Tina's Kryptonite-irradiated skeleton, which Clark is able to see with X-ray vision and therefore discover Tina has returned.
  • Sexy Soaked Shirt: In the teaser, Clark's shirt gets wet thanks to a leaky pipe, giving Lana a nice look at his chiseled chest.
  • She's Back: Tina Greer returns in this episode.
  • Spot the Imposter: In the final act, Tina has assumed Clark's form and is putting the moves on Lana. After Clark comes into the Talon, both he and Tina claim they're the genuine article. Clark proves he's the real one by mentioning an earlier incident with a leaky pipe, exposing Tina.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Tina Greer, to Lana.
  • Sweeps Week Lesbian Kiss: Tina with Lana twice, in the forms of Whitney Fordman and Clark Kent.
  • Take Care of the Kids: Before dying, Tina asks Clark to take care of Lana.
  • That Thing Is Not My Child!: Said by Mrs. Fordman who tells Clark after he rescues her that "crazy woman is not my son!" and this informs him not only that it is really Tina, but also that the real Whitney died.
  • Tempting Fate: As Whitney rescues another wounded Marine, he asks Whitney not to let them die. Whitney assures the man they're not gonna die and they'll be home safe. Then an explosion goes off with them both caught in it.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Clark's exposure of her actual identity to Lana sends Tina into a furious rage.
  • Villain of the Week: Tina Greer, again.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Jonathan takes Clark to task for whining about how his relationship with Lana is on hold in the wake of "Whitney's" return to Smallville.
Jonathan: Clark, you have to put your personal feelings aside, son. Whitney risked his life for this country, and he deserves a hero's welcome.
  • Why Won't You Die?: Tina shouts "WHY WON'T YOU JUST DIE?!" at Clark during their climactic battle.
  • Yandere: Tina, who goes as far as to killing a Marine lieutenant and disguising herself as numerous people in order to be with Lana.
