“Ami, thank you for everything you've done for us. And please, don't forget us when you're in Germany. And as for you, monster. Anyone who tries to prevent Ami from pursuing her dreams will have to answer to me, Sailor Moon! Douse yourself in water and repent!
Usagi Tsukino

(DiC Episode: "Sailor Mercury Moving On?")

Ami faces a great dilemma as she's been offered a scholarship to study at an advanced program in Germany. But doing so mean that she'll have to leave her friends along with her duty as Sailor Mercury. Fortunately, Usagi and the others assure her that they'll accept her decision whatever it may be.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Bad Boss: Berthier makes it clear that she'll kill Nipas if she doesn't get rid of her frozen collection or if she continues to be sloppy with her work ethic.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Usagi's eternal wish was for her and her friends to live happy, normal lives of their choosing. But now that Ami may pursue her happy life by moving to Germany to study, Usagi will have to suck it up and support her.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: Usagi is concerned that Ami will forget about everyone once she leaves for Germany.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The girls are given new pens and communicators early in the episode. Minako would use hers to contact the others to warn them about the ice cream shop of horrors.
  • Dub Name Change: Bob Floy becomes “Frosty” in the DIC dub.
  • Dude in Distress: Artemis is frozen solid when he investigates Bob Floy and the girls immediately notice his disappearance.
  • Equipment Upgrade: The cats give the girls new transformation pens and communicator watches.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: All the girls laugh when Luna snarks that it would be impossible for Usagi to study as hard as Ami.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Ami justifies the absence of her friends to the snot-nosed brat by asserting that they had something important to take care of. It's only when she looks at her transformation pen does she realize the reason why're they're occupied.
  • Goal in Life: Ami's dream has always been to study medicine so she can be a doctor like her mom.
  • Gut Feeling:
    • Minako gets a gut feeling that something is wrong with the new ice cream shop as her partner Artemis deemed it suspicious. She's proven correct as she discovers a collection of frozen victims in the backroom.
    • Rei admits to having a bad feeling after Minako herself doesn't show up to the bus stop.
  • Hate Plague: Anyone who eats Bob Floy's corrupted ice cream becomes filled with hateful emotions.
  • An Ice Person: Berthier summons her Snow Droid, Nipas, to contaminate the ice cream shop with her dark ice power. She would also freeze various people, and one cat, the more she worked there.
  • I Choose to Stay: Mercury decides to forgo her studies abroad dream as she believes her friendships with the girls is more important.
  • Image Song: One of Ami's songs, "Onaji Namida wo Wakeatte (Sharing the Same Tears)" plays when she reaches the airport before deciding to go back to her friends.
  • The Infiltration: Chibi-usa spends as much time as she can at Ami's house in the hopes of finding the Silver Crystal.
  • Insert Song: The DiC dub replaces "Onaji Namida wo Wakeatte" with "Only A Memory Away" when Amy reaches the airport. Interestingly, the version in the episode is greatly different from the version released on the first DiC soundtrack.
  • It's All About Me: Chibi-usa believes that she's responsible for convincing Ami to stay with her friends.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Ami finds validity in Chibi-usa's derogatory comments about friendship as she realized that her friends are just as important as her dreams.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: The Scouts other than Moon receive new transformation pens and communicators, though only Mercury’s is shown off in this episode.
  • Moving Angst: Ami's been invited to continue her studies in Germany which means that she won't see her friends for a long time and vice versa.
  • New Superpower: Sailor Mercury learns Shine Aqua Illusion which involves blasting a large body of water.
  • Nightmare Sequence: Usagi has one where she sees Ami and Mamoru leaving her forever.
  • Now, Let Me Carry You: Rei argues on behalf of Ami taking the scholarship as she's always dedicated her time as a Sailor Guardian without ever faltering or complaining. So it's only fair that they do the same and support her.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: After he's caught by Berthier and her Droid, Artemis acts like a common cat hoping to not arouse suspicion. To his dismay, Berthier could care less and has her subordinate ice him.
  • The Strategist: Usagi points out that they've always relied on Ami's brains to help them solve enemy plots.
  • Surprise Party: The Guardians try to throw one to Ami before she leaves. But she refuses the thought as she always struggles with saying goodbyes and the party would just make it harder for her to go through with her decision.
  • The Worf Effect: The Sailor Guardians can only hide out from Nipas' winter breath and can barely attack her.
  • The Workaholic: Of the study variety. Even after attending cram school, Ami still decides to study at home and plans to continue until 11 o'clock.
  • Wrong Assumption: Chibi-usa decides to target Ami believing that someone as responsible as her would be in possession of the Silver Crystal.

Today on Sailor Moon, Amy's off to Germany to study to be a doctor. We all wish her well, but it comes right as the Negaverse launches a treacherous new attack on the Sailor Scouts. Will Amy really leave us? Can the Sailor Scouts survive without her? You just stay right there and I'll show you!
