Recap / Prehistoric Park Reimagined E 14 Hells Labyrinth

Go To

A month and a half after the deinosuchus mission and with only two weeks left before the beginning of 'Phase 2', a vicious hurricane strikes the park. And before long, the park staff soon find themselves having to face one of their biggest challenges yet when the storm ends up causing a power failure that allows multiple animals to escape, and all while several carnivores are starting to display alarming signs of abnormally high aggression to boot!

  • Adaptational Species Change: In Prehistoric Earth, Vhagar and Balerion were both allosaurus. Here, they are the torvosaurus duo.
  • Air Jousting: Rocco and Laverne the teratornis end up fighting an almost entirely aerial battle against Hannibal and Imilce the argentavis.
  • Animal Jingoism: The long existing rivalries between Dag and Nero and Smokey and Diego come to a head in this chapter.
  • Battle in the Rain: Multiple animals end up battling each other over the course of the shutdown, and it all unfolds over the course of a vicious hurricane.
  • Bears Are Bad News: Kronk and Smokey both become immensely aggressive and destructive (the former rather shockingly so and the latter more so than usual) while infected with the Hate Plague.
  • Behemoth Battle:
    • Big Al the allosaurus ends up personally fighting against Custer the alamosaurus over the course of an attempted invasion of the Hell Creek main herbivore paddock by the allosaurus pack.
    • Santino and Demona the Morrison allosaurus pack's leaders end up clashing against Vhagar and Balerion the torvosaurus.
    • By a certain definition of 'behemoth', Kronk the arctotherium and Sid the megatherium end up dueling against each other.
    • Matilda the t. rex ends up dueling against Gideon the stegosaurus.
    • Arlo the apatosaurus ends up dueling against an escaped saurophaganax.
    • And for the grand finale, Terrence and Matilda end up having a brutal rematch against each other.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • When a Hate Plague infected Kronk is seconds away from laying into the staff group who've come to investigate the Santa Cruz Savannas exhibit zone, it is only through a timely intervention from Sid the megatherium that Kronk is successfully prevented from killing anyone.
    • Cirrus the quetzalcoatlus, having escaped the quetzalcoatlus aviary over the course of the storm, comes diving into the Morrison Formation main herbivore paddock in time to scare away the pectinodon before they can attempt to attack Adrian and his companions.
    • Arlo the apatosaurus arrives at the veterinary facility just in time to fight off a Hate Plague infected saurophaganax (and the same one who'd first critically wounded him all the way back in the Jurassic Period no less) right as its about to try to kill and eat Linda and various other characters there.
    • Upon catching sight of the Hate Plague infected Smokey dangerously close to his territory, the sleeping Shira, and their three week old cubs, Diego jumps in to do battle against him...incidentally saving Leon in the process.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Both Alice and Tina show clear concern for the wellbeing of their respective younger siblings Jack and Cass.
  • Big Storm Episode: Almost the entire chapter occurs over the course of a vicious hurricane.
  • Brutal Bird of Prey: Rocco and Laverne, who are already viciously aggressive and pugnacious at even the best of times, end up becoming even more so while infected with the Hate Plague.
  • Butt-Monkey: This is not Dag's finest hour - in quick succession, he's sprayed in the face by a fire extinguisher, gets his ass kicked by Nero, attempts to steal droma eggs and gets curbstomped by Duke and, finally, has Nero snap at him as he retreats.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • The pectinodon and compsognathus prove no match for superiorly sized Cirrus and Carina (respectively).
    • Similarly, the Morrison formation allosaurus pack prove quite outmatched against the combined might of both Cirrus and all the larger herbivores of the Hell Creek main herbivore paddock.
    • Dag and his pack handily get their asses kicked by Nero, Duke, and their respective packs.
    • A Hate Plague infected Rommel the dimetrodon ends up doing battle against Dermot the doedicurus, ultimately proving unable to even get a scratch on the latter while continuously getting beaten up by the prehistoric armadillo.
    • Sid the megatherium similarly utterly wipes the floor against a Hate Plague infected Kronk.
    • Averted in the battle between Rocco and Hannibal, as the latter manages to put up a decent fight against the former and ends up having to be ultimately taken down by the dromaeosaurus once he comes down within their reach in preparation to continue attacking the at that point very heavily wounded Hannibal. Played straight, on the other hand, with the fight between their respective mates, as Imilce ends up leaving Laverne a bloodied and weakly warbling mess while she herself has hardly so much as a scratch afterward.
  • David vs. Goliath: The small, lanky, and ferocious Diego once again clashes against the big, stocky, and powerful Smokey. And unlike the last time they fought, Diego wins this time.
  • Designated Girl Fight: A variation occurs in that Imilce the female argentavis and Laverne the female teratornis end up doing battle against each other while their respective mates likewise duke it out.
  • Escaped Animal Rampage: A sizable number of animals end up escaping and wrecking havoc across the park after a power failure caused by the storm results in the electronic locks attached to specific paddocks to start shorting out and allowing the gates of said paddocks to unlock and open up on their own.
  • Feathered Fiend: Rocco, Laverne, and the other birds and carnivorous dinosaurs infected with the Hate Plague become unnaturally aggressive over the course of the storm while infected.
  • Hate Plague: A mysterious virus turns out to have infected several carnivores amongst the park's animal repertoire and caused them to start acting unnaturally violent and aggressive while possessing bloodshot eyes and foaming jaws. It even ends up named after the Trope Namer at the end of the chapter.
  • Headbutting Pachy: Einstein and the rest of the pachycephalosaurus herd end up taking part in a battle against the Morrison formation allosaurus pack when said pack tries to invade the main Hell Creek herbivore paddock. Over the course of said battle, the pachycephalosaurus all ram their domed heads against the allosaurus luckless enough to try to go after them.
  • Homage: This is one big one to Kaiju movies, as well as the works of Ray Harryhausen.
  • Hypocritical Humor: As Jack swiftly points out when Colette calls him a dork for referencing Firefly, she herself was able to swiftly recognize that he was making such a reference without him explicitly saying what he was referencing, thus implying she herself would technically also be a dork.
  • It Can Think: Even while under the influence of the Hate Plague, Matilda's smart enough to recognize when she's being chased into a trap in time to subsequently run off in a different direction from the one her pursuers are chasing her in.
  • Loud of War: Carina the edmontosaurus uses her loud bugling cry, alongside her superior size, to scare a trio of escaped compsognathus away after said trio was dumb enough to try to make a beeline for her eggs with the intent of snacking on them.
  • Malicious Monitor Lizard:
    • While not truly monitor lizards, Kenge and Komodo the secodontosaurus behave far more aggressively than they normally do while infected with the Hate Plague.
    • Inverted, on the other hand, with Geronimo and the rest of the palaeosaniwa, who all act seemingly aggressive in rightful self defense against the more malicious (at the time) Pleistocene coyotes that end up rampaging around in the Hell Creek forest building.
  • Mama Bear: Carina the edmontosaurus is very quick to come assist Cass in scaring away a trio of escaped compsognathus dumb enough to attempt to snack on her eggs.
  • Mighty Roar: A sizable number of the Hate Plague infected carnivorous mammals and giant theropods unleash vicious and loud roars over the course of their rampages and battles, with Diego also joining in on the act despite not being infected with the Hate Plague himself.
  • Noble Bird of Prey: Hannibal and Imilce, in a rare vulture example of this trope, defend Jack and Colette from several other escaped hostile animals.
  • Noble Wolf: Nero and his pack work alongside Jack, Colette, and their group to protect them.
  • Panthera Awesome: Diego the smilodon is at his best in this episode, going so far as to viciously duel against Smokey (and WIN this time) for the sake of protecting Leon, Shira, and his and the latter's unborn cubs.
  • Papa Wolf: Diego the smilodon proves very protective of his cubs a full three weeks after their birth when he eagerly rushes in to fight off Smokey the arctodus after he catches the latter dangerously close to his and Shira's paddock while Shira and the cubs are asleep and unable to defend themselves.
  • Raptor Attack: The pectinodon pack showcases the mindlessly aggressive and violent aspects of this trope while infected with the Hate Plague.
  • Relationship-Salvaging Disaster: A familial instance of this occurs between Cass and Tina, with the latter very clearly showing concern and love for the former over the course of the dangerous events that unfold at the park during the storm after a history of tense and dysfunctional dynamics between them.
  • Ship Tease: A sizable number of this is shown between Jack and Colette over the course of their adventures together during the storm, with some minor additional romance teasing occurring between Cass and Horace at the Hell Creek formation and a single brief hint at a possible future romance between Leon and Yolanda appearing in the last scene before the staff head off to recapture Matilda.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The alpha male and female pectinodon are revealed to be named Butch and Cassidy.
    • The beta male of the Morrison Formation allosaurus pack is revealed to be named Big Al.
    • The arrival of Big Al and the rest of the Morrison formation allosaurus (sans alpha male and female Santino and Demona) at the main Hell Creek herbivore paddock is heralded by Bad Vibrations (complete with ripples in a nearby puddle) in much the same way that the t. rex's arrival is heralded in Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
    • The 'alpha male and female' of the secodontosaurus aggregations are revealed to be named Kenge and Komodo respectively.
    • At one point in the middle of the chapter, Matilda the t. rex and Gideon the stegosaurus end up dueling against each other in the rain.
    • The torvosaurus are at last revealed to have been named Vhagar and Balerion.
  • Temper-Ceratops: The combined triceratops and torosaurus herd all take part in the battle against the Morrison formation allosaurus pack, eagerly alternating between taking on defensive positions around the weaker members of the herd and charging forward with their horns before hurriedly moving back into defensive position.
  • Tough Armored Dinosaur: The ankylosaurus and denversaurus prove very tough nuts to crack for the allosaurus in their failed attempts at hunting them and the other Hell Creek formation herbivores (with Abrams in particular very nearly managing to bash one of the allosaurus on the snout with his tail).
  • Undying Loyalty: Kaa, Duke and Nero refuse to leave Jack, Collete and Linda's sides, even when cornered by a saurophaganax. If Arlo hadn't turned up, they would have been eaten.
  • Unpleasant Animal Counterpart: Downplayed.
  • Vile Vulture: Rocco and Laverne the teratornis, already quite viciously aggressive even at the best of times, end up becoming even more so as a result of being amongst the carnivores infected by the Hate Plague.
  • Wham Shot: The sight of the myriad escaped animals and gaping open paddocks on the security camera footage serves as an in-universe example of this to Drew and the other staff members present at the main staff headquarters.
  • Those Wily Coyotes: Dag and his pack serve as minor antagonists, attacking the Hell Creek forest building and Dag attempting to raid the droma nest.
