Recap / Prehistoric Park Reimagined E 13 The D Bags

Go To

For the final mission of Prehistoric Park's 'Phase 1', all hands are on deck as the team goes back to rescue the largest alligator ever, Deinosuchus. And in the subsequent adventures that unfold, they go to show just how far they've now come as a team.

  • Adaptational Species Change: In the original Prehistoric Park, the tyrannosaurs that scared off the juvenile Parasaurolophus were a pair of Albertosaurus, which are not known from the area. Here, they’re the more location accurate Teratophoneus. Similarly, the original Prehistoric Park featured an encounter with a pack of the now dubious genus Troodon. Here, the troodontid dinosaur that plays a similar role is the more scientifically set in stone Talos.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Sirocco is revealed to have mated with Cirrus's brooding and aloof former rival Zephyr now that Zephyr has been defeated in combat and his previously desired choice of mate Nimbus has understandably mated with Cirrus.
  • Book Ends: In the very first mission Novum Initium, Leon and Jack worked together to attract the attention of a pack of ceratosaurus towards them and away from Arlo the apatosaurus while Drew, Adrian, and Alice helped him get out of the quicksand, only for Jack to end up needing to save Leon's life after the latter stumbled at an inopportune moment. Here, in the final mission of this particular 'phase', a similar strategy is used by Leon and Jack to attract a pack of teratophoneus away from a combined herd of nasutoceratops and yehuecauhceratops that Drew, Adrian, and Alice attract through the portal; but this time Leon is able to successfully avoid stumbling. And while Jack was the one who ultimately got the ceratosaurus through the portal back in Novum Initium, Leon is the one who ultimately gets the teratophoneus through the portal in this mission.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Terrence is still in the veterinary recovery pens after his fight against Matilda and subsequent surgery in The Oddities. The juvenile male majungasaurus that got viciously attacked and injured over the course of its rescue in the same chapter is likewise still present in the veterinary recovery pens and bonding with Terrence.
    • Diego and Shira are revealed to have mated (with the latter having even managed to get impregnated by Diego) after several weeks of bonding.
    • Jack is shown to still be working hard in training the dromaeosaurus pack.
    • Cirrus and Zephyr are shown to be on good terms with each other and also to have successfully mated with Nimbus and Sirocco after they finally put an end to their rivalry with a battle in the previous episode. Furthermore, Adrian briefly starts thinking about Alice in a subtle nod to his at this point still active and unvoiced crush on her.
    • Over the course of his flight on the hang-glider, Leon remembers his current unpleasant reputation as The Load, his pep talks from Jack, and how much Yolanda and several of the other staff members have since come to enjoy and appreciate having him around.
    • When Drew initially suggests sending the at that point newly discovered agujatyrannus through the portal immediately after the team has first discovered said species, Jack and Adrian give him a sharp reminder on how they'd promised Nikolai all the way back in Novum Initium that they would only send undiscovered species of giant carnivorous dinosaur through the portal after informing him about them and gaining his permission to rescue them first.
    • As Adrian mentions after once again explaining to Drew what a lek is after the latter expresses confusion on what the term means, he had previously explained to Drew about this very behavior when the two of them had previously observed the anzu wyliei displaying the exact same behavior during their rescue in Return of the King.
    • Khatin is shown to be keeping a pair of abandoned ornithomimus eggs warm in a spare incubator in his lab after the possibility of some of the eggs getting abandoned was first brought up in the chapter in which they were revealed to have been laid in Extras.
    • John Willoby is shown observing an abandoned harpactognathus egg that he'd previously mentioned in 'The Oddities''.
    • Similarly, Willoby's desire for the harpactognathus that eventually hatches from the egg to perhaps be trained to serve as his animal companion on the security team, plus Colette's idea to train the dire wolves and argentavis for similar purposes, are once again brought up, with the latter idea even being confirmed to have officially received the green light from Nikolai in one of the chapter's final scenes.
    • As indicated by his response when Alice brings up how his at the time newest suggested idea of having her and Leon use their noise broadcasting devices to startle a large combined herd of multiple ceratopsian species into stampeding via recordings of tyrannosaur vocals is a very different plan from what he usually suggests, Drew clearly hasn't forgotten how Leon's usage of his broadcasting device played a key role in saving his life when he was almost eaten by majungasaurus in the previous mission.
    • At long last, Mdogo the orphaned theriodictis pup is integrated with the larger unrelated pack of his kind.
    • And in the very last scene of the episode, not only does Drew receive a subtle reminder of his Head-in-the-Sand Management tendencies, but the strategy to separate Terrence, Matilda, and their parents from each other in their paddock is at last fully put into use.
  • Feathered Fiend: The saurornitholestes and talos both prove a realistically fearsome obstacle for the rescue team to overcome over the course of both species' rescues. The teratophoneus and agujatyrannus are also quite fearsome and possess small coatings of feathers.
  • Happily Married: As of this chapter, Diego and Shira have finally mated, and the latter is now pregnant with Diego's cubs.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Several occur for the original Prehistoric Park series finale. To start, the team recreates the scene in the final episode of the original Prehistoric Park where a pair of Parasaurolophus briefly watch them before being scared off by a pair of tyrannosaurs. The original series used misplaced Albertosaurus, while this chapter uses the more accurate Teratophoneus. Similarly, a pack of 'raptors' raids the team's camp like in the original series and Extinction World (but this time, as per Science Marches On, with the confirmed genuine species talos being the species responsible and rescued instead of the now dubious troodon), with one of the 'raptors' in question ending up named Rascal. They also ultimately succeed in capturing and rescuing the deinosuchus by making use of the exact same method that was used in the original series, Mortal's Extinction World, and Prehistoric Earth. And finally, Khatin is revealed to have started on his way to playing papa for a pair of ornithomimus chicks in a way similar to how Bob ended up doing so in the original series.
    • There are also similarities between this episode and Every Golden Scale from Prehistoric Earth. For starters, much like in Every Golden Scale, Leon ends up going on a solo hang gliding flight where he reflects upon his status at the park and encounters a flock of pterosaurs. Furthermore, one of the deinosuchus very nearly rampages its way free of the trap used to capture it and others of its kind and only manages to safely get sent through the portal after its brethren through hurried improvising just like in the former fanfic.
  • Named After Someone Famous: According to Word of God from A-LionGleek, the alpha male and female talos are named after the famed Outlaw Couple Bonnie and Clyde.
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile: The focus target of this mission is the giant prehistoric alligator, Deinosuchus. One large female in particular proves fearsome enough to very nearly break herself loose from the trap the rescue team has set to ensure easy transport for the species through the portal.
  • Pair the Spares: Lampshaded word for word by Adrian over how Zephyr and Sirocco have mated after ending up the only younger members of the quetzalcoatlus flock who still haven't yet found mates after the successful mating of Cirrus and Nimbus.
  • Raptor Attack: Averted, as per usual, with the saurornitholestes and talos. Both species are portrayed with feathers and acting no more aggressively than any modern animal.
  • Scared of What's Behind You: At the sight of a pair of juvenile parasaurolophus starting to act rather nervous, Jack has just enough time to ask Drew what he thinks is causing the hadrosaurs to act so spooked before a low growl from behind them causes said hadrosaurs to flee; at which point the rescue team look behind them in time to see a pair of teratophoneus standing right behind them.
  • Ship Tease: There are once again small instances of this between Jack and Colette and Leon and Yolanda. A decent amount of this is also introduced between Cass and Horace. And there's also a subtle hint of Adrian still having a small crush on Alice.
  • Shout-Out: The large adult female deinosuchus rescued ends up named Dil. And according to Word of God from A-LionGleek, the three juvenile deinosuchus are named Swampy, Ally, and Cranky.
  • Shown Their Work: The out of place albertosaurus from the original Prehistoric Park's deinosuchus mission are replaced with the more scientifically accurate teratophoneus. Also, the now scientifically dubious troodon are replaced with the more scientifically set in stone talos.
  • Social Ornithopod: An entire combined herd of four different species of hadrosaur are present at the water hole the rescue team visits during this mission, and subsequently get rescued.
  • Temper-Ceratops: A combined herd of nasutoceratops and yehuecauhceratops prove rather defensive and willing to fight against a pack of teratophoneus trying to hunt them and their offspring.
  • Tough Armored Dinosaur: Downplayed in the case of the akainacephalus. While they ultimately don't cause any trouble for the team at the moment of their encounter, the narration that occurs immediately before the reveal of what species they are implies via how they (plus the mirarce and navajodactylus that are also present alongside them) are not a reason for concern yet is enough to infer that they could yet have proven an unpleasant obstacle to deal with if circumstances had favored for as much to happen.
