Recap / Phineas And Ferb The Beak

Go To

Phineas and Ferb build an indestructible suit to navigate an extremely dangerous obstacle course, but after using their suit to help someone, they accidentally become a new superhero known as The Beak. Things are not all smooth sailing, however, as they have to keep their superhero identity a secret while a new villain, Khaka Peü Peü, emerges to challenge them, which strains their friendship with Isabella.

Meanwhile, Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz has been appointed as mayor for the day by his brother Roger (as a fall guy after Khaka wreaks havoc through the city); he tries to take advantage of his newfound power, but he struggles while trying to do his governmental duties.

Tropes:

  • 2D Visuals, 3D Effects: Almost every single shot of the Beak is rendered in 3D animation, while the rest of the episode is done with traditional animation.
  • Affectionate Parody: Of superhero shows from the 60s.
  • The Ahnold: After getting her pupils dilated, Linda has to wear sunglasses. She does an imitation saying, "I'll be bahck."
  • Animal-Themed Superbeing: Phineas and Ferb become a bird-themed superhero called The Beak. Later, Candace attempts to bust the brothers by pretending to be a supervillain named the Dangeraffe, and drags Stacy along for her henchman, the Dangerbil.
  • Appropriated Appellation: Phineas and Ferb's first superhero antic gets nicknamed "The Beak" by Isabella, due to the exo-suit that's somewhat shaped like a bird. They decided to go along with it and make it their superhero name and theme.
  • Authority in Name Only: Once Roger "gives up" his mayoral position to Doofenshmirtz, it's abundantly clear that Doof has no actual power to do anything since the whole thing is just so Roger can avoid blame for the supervillain attacks.
  • Battle Cry: Whenever he is called to action, the Beak calls out, "Bacaw!"
  • Bavarian Fire Drill: Doof's plan in this episode is simply to declare that he has conquered the Tri-State Area and hope nobody actually bothers to check. Monogram and Carl are sent into a panic, but nobody else is fooled. Doof attempts to hold a meeting of the "former rulers of the Tri-State Area" to set up his new regime but the only people he's able to gather are Roger (who was apparently told they'd be planning their mother's birthday party), the building super and a random crossing guard. Once supervillains begin attacking the town, Roger decides to use this to temporarily put Doof "in charge" so he'll receive all the blame until the whole thing blows over.
  • Blatant Lies: Phineas' constant excuses in front of Isabella to protect the Beak's identity, which threatens their friendship.
  • Break the Cutie: Isabella does not take Phineas leaving her that well, to the point she accuses him of letting her down when he's making several excuses to protect his secret.
  • Brick Joke: Candace, as the Dangeraffe, instructs Stacy, as her henchman the Dangerbil, to keep an eye on her bike. After a few seconds of a failed busting attempt, Stacy rolls by in her ball and casually tells Candace she lost her bike.
  • Cat Up a Tree: Parodied where Baljeet is in a tree and Buford calls for help saying his "nerd" is stuck there.
Buford: Look, it's your favorite calculator, and some math problems!
    Baljeet: Oh, fractions?
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • When Ferb stares at Phineas oddly after he talks about all the Bulgarian folk-dancing elements added to the exo-suit, Phineas asks if he should add more Bulgarian folk-related elements, before realizing he should add less.
Phineas: What, you think we should add more Bulgarian folk-related elements? Oh, less! Less Bulgar—okay, wow. I thought we were on the same page. But no. It's cool. Whatever.
    • Also Candace when she's ranting about her failures to bust her brothers.
Candace: It's not fair! Every time I try to bust Phineas and Ferb, it's always, "Candace, I'm shopping!" "Candace, I'm having root canal surgery!" "Candace, I'm deliberating with a sequestered jury, how did you even get in here?"
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Death Course: The boys start the day by building a deadly skateboarding gauntlet track, filled with sharp weapons, spikes, fire, and other such things. Before they attempt to try it out, they accidentally drop their skateboard, which gets utterly mauled and destroyed before landing at the bottom and exploding. They decided to go down the stairs provided behind the course and build an exo-suit that can withstand the gauntlet.
  • Disguised in Drag: Monogram and Carl are so panicked about Doof's declaration of power, that they attempt to escape dressed as a mother and her baby, respectively. The disguise would've been more effective had Monogram shaved his mustache, though.
  • Don't Explain the Joke: One of the bystanders watching The Beak fight Khaka happily explains the quips and puns the Beak makes, although another person beside him is not too amused.
The Beak: If you didn't like that one, maybe this'll be a hit. (hits the Khaka Crawler into the air with one of its legs)
Charles: (to the man beside him) Yeah, see, 'cause- 'cause he hit him.
Man: I'm not an idiot, Charles.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Once Khaka introduces Candace as his sidekick, The Beak thinks he is holding her hostage and immediately surrenders, much to the former's surprise. Then again, Phineas doesn't understand that Candace is trying to bust him and Ferb.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Is Candace blind or does she just not notice her mother getting a root canal when she's trying to bust her brothers?
  • Fall Guy: Lampshaded in Roger's letter to Heinz after giving up his position as mayor:
Bro, thanks for filling in for me! You're gonna make a GREAT fall guy— I mean, mayor! -Roger
  • Flanderization: In this episode, Candace's busting tendencies are amped up to eleven where she tries to get her mother at the most inconvenient moments, whether it be her root canal surgery or her eye exam.
  • Genre Blindness: Isabella fails to figure out that Phineas is The Beak until after he unmasks himself in public. Candace makes fun of her for it.
    Isabella: Phineas is The Beak?!
Candace: Hey, you just earned your "A-Der" patch.
    • This gets a Call-Back in "Bee Story", when Isabella is actually wearing an "A-Der" patch.
  • Human Head on the Wall: Or, in this case, platypus. This was the trap that Doof set up for Perry.
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: Played straight and discussed several times in the episode. Phineas and Ferb decided to keep their identity as the Beak a secret from Isabella because they fear that doing so will put her in danger, while Candace attempts to "harm" Linda to lure Phineas and Ferb as the Beak and bust them. Later, after Khaka and Candace team up, the Beak gives up, thinking Khaka captured Candace instead of recruiting her.
Phineas: The life of a superhero is a lonely one, Ferb. Even after only eleven minutes.
  • I Was Just Joking: Perry breaks into Heinz Doofenshmirtz's lair after the latter announces he's taken over the Tri-State Area and sent the O.W.C.A. into a red-alert panic. Doofenshmirtz explains that he was actually just bluffing, and that he was banking on the fact that everyone would be too lazy or busy to actually refute him. Subverted later when Roger actually gives up his position as mayor to Heinz for a day (albeit to take blame off of him if anything goes wrong).
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Khaka Peü Peü's motive is revealed to be sympathetic: he never had a best day ever. So Phineas and Ferb stop being the Beak and invite him to join in on their best day ever. His response is to insult their idea for the day, stating "that sounds dreadful!" He promptly receives his comeuppance, and never does have a best day ever.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Phineas talks about how it's only been 11 minutes since the brothers became the Beak; he says it in the 11 minute mark of the episode, just before the ad break.
  • Lemony Narrator: "So... everything worked out... I guess. Narrator Guy is out, PEACE!"
  • Mad Libs Catchphrase: "Dangiraffe is out, PEACE!"
  • The Masquerade Will Kill Your Dating Life: Phineas is forced to abandon Isabella to protect his identity as the Beak, which saddens Isabella further as this is the fourth time today he let her down.
  • Oblivious to His Own Description: Candace scoffs at the news of The Beak and Khaka Peü Peü fighting, saying that it's just "some big, stupid dress-up game they're playing with their little loser friends"... while she's dressed up as a fake supervillain in an attempt to bust the brothers.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: The Beak walks up close to Khaka's vehicle proclaiming they give up, after they find out that Candace teams up with him. However, after Candace quits Khaka's team, the Beak is suddenly a lot further away, building up speed as they fly towards Khaka and attack him. Lampshaded by Khaka, who wonders how the Beak suddenly moved farther away.
  • Overly Long Gag: "Whoa... whoa... whoa... whoa..."
  • Personal Mook: Discussed when Candace asks Stacy to become her henchman for her supervillain antic.
    Candace: You'll be my henchman!
    Stacy: What's that?
Candace: It's like the bridesmaid of crime.
  • Plummet Perspective: Used when the Beak is punched into the wall of City Hall which shakes the building so hard it causes Isabella to slip and dangle off the roof ledge, and we get a brief shot of her camera falling to the streets below.
  • Poke the Poodle: Despite Khaka's reputation, most of his evil acts are not actually that harmful, although the Beak and the civilians still treat him as a serious threat.
Khaka Peü Peü: Enough! Okay, Danville, nothing ruins a day faster than unexpected rain showers! (sprays a crowd of civilians with water)
Guy in the crowd: You Monster! Now I'm wet!
  • Powered Armor: The brothers built one that can safely traverse their own dangerous skateboard course. They end up using it to become a superhero and save people.
  • Promoted to Scapegoat: Roger is all too happy to give his position to Doof the second a supervillain appears.
  • Rapid-Fire "But!": When Khaka Peü Peü rejects Phineas' offer, there is a rapid succession of frames of characters saying, "But", first Phineas, then Isabella, and finally Candace, who is still talking to her mom.
  • Rapid-Fire Descriptors: The name of Phineas and Ferb's obstacle course at the beginning of the episode is "The Phineas-and-Ferb-Edge-of-Insanity-Kiss-Your-Butt-Goodbye-Gravity's-a-Stone-Cold-Sucker-Nightmare-Rail-Skate-Track-Obstacle-Course of Doom."
  • Running Gag:
    • Doof can't seem to find the button for his intercom, instead pushing things such as a stapler and a bowl of mints. Apparently, Roger's office doesn't even have an intercom.
    • Khaka Peü Peü's wife throwing a chair at him. In the end, she even complains that he's supposed to take her shopping for more throwing chairs.
  • Sadistic Choice: Khaka sets one up for the Beak: either they save Isabella who's about to fall off City Hall, or they save a group of bystanders about to be crushed by a falling billboard. Luckily, since the Beak suit is piloted by two people, they decided to Take a Third Option by having Phineas get out of the suit and save Isabella, while Ferb controls the suit alone and saves the bystanders.
  • Say My Name: Isabella cries out, "Phineas!!!" as he and Ferb leave her for the fourth time, to keep their identity as the Beak a secret.
  • Secret Identity: Phineas and Ferb had to keep their identity as the Beak a secret from Isabella, fearing it would put her in danger.
  • Secret Identity Vocal Shift: The Beak suit distorts Phineas's voice to make him sound deeper.
  • Shout-Out: In Doof's video, he is standing at a podium behind a giant banner of himself, much like the iconic shot in Citizen Kane.
  • Special Guest: Ben Stiller voices Khaka Peü Peü. His wife Christine Taylor voiced the She Who Must Not Be Seen wife.
  • She Who Must Not Be Seen: Khaka Peü Peü's wife.
  • Stupid Crooks: Candace attempts to be a supervillain to lure Phineas and Ferb in to bust them, and her first act of villainy is to rob her mom; unfortunately, Linda sees through the ruse, and simply assumes Candace just wants some allowance money or something. Phineas and Ferb do show up, but not with the Beak exo-suit, much to Candace's annoyance.
  • Superhero Episode: Pretty much hits all the checkmarks. Phineas and Ferb as the hero: check. Isabella as the intrepid reporter / Damsel in Distress: check. A supervillain with a silly name: check.
  • Take That, Audience!: The entirety of the Beak's theme song mocks the audience while sending praises of how cool the Beak is.
    The Beak, The Beak
Flies as fast as a supersonic jet
The Beak, (The Beak), The Beak, (The Beak)
You can't fly, be honest, you can't
The Beak, (The Beak), The Beak, (The Beak)
He's strong enough to move a mountain, you're pretty weak
    (Seriously, what do you bench?)
You really are pretty lame compared to The Beak
    The Beak, The Beak
    The Beak, The Beak!
  • Unfortunate Name: The villain rising up to challenge The Beak arrives in the middle of the city and announces himself proudly, "You can call me... Khaka Peü Peü!" Cue laughter from the citizens nearby. Khaka himself insists his name, despite what it sounds like, actually means "the strong fist" or "that strong fist".
  • The Unmasking: Phineas does this as he reveals himself to be the Beak.
  • Verbal Tic: Khaka Peü Peü tends to end his sentences with "Thank you very much!"
  • The Voice: Khaka Peü Peü's wife is only ever heard from offscreen, even when she throws chairs at him.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Linda's reaction when Candace attempts to bust her brothers while she is getting a root canal.
