Recap / Phineas And Ferb One Good Scare Ought To Do It

Go To

Phineas discovers Isabella has the hiccups and decides to help cure her by building a haunted house.

Meanwhile, Candace goes to visit Jeremy, but Suzy makes her visit a nightmare.

During the events above, Dr. Doofenshmirtz tries to destroy his mentor's secret hideout because his mentor asked him to do it before he passed on.

Tropes

  • 555: The Johnsons' number is 555-0105.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: After Perry refuses to tell Doofenshmirtz where his jet keys are, Doofenshmirtz scoffs at him and says that he'll find the keys himself if Perry doesn't want to cooperate. Literally one second later, he's on his knees begging Perry to tell where the keys are, saying he'll do anything for him.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: When Doofenshmirtz makes sure he didn't forget anything when he left the hideout, he goes over what he sees: his old basketball, his lamp, Christmas lights, umbrella, Perry the Platypus, the Disintevaporator, his golf cl—
Doofenshmirtz: Perry the Platypus!? (Scare Chord) The Disintevaporator!? (Scare Chord) My golf clubs!? I don't even play golf!
  • Aside Glance: At one point, when Candace rides her bike to the Johnson residence, Danny Jacob sings, "She's the Girl Next Door who's a pop diva by day and a Hollywood bad girl by night crossed with an old school glamour goddess I'd like to meet...", and Candace shoots him an unamused look when he takes too long to sing this part.
  • The B Grade: Phineas tells Baljeet and Buford to dress up as their greatest fear. Baljeet's fear? A failed math test.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: There is an awkward silence after Doofenshmirtz first reveals the Disintevaporator, until Doof clears his throat and the dramatic sting plays again.
  • Butt Biter: When Candace arrives at Jeremy's house, Suzy comes out and sends her dog to bite Candace's butt.
  • Catchphrase Interruptus: A self-inflicted example. Isabella timidly trails off from her usual "whatcha doing?" upon seeing the haunted house for the first time.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Professor Destructocon's life's ambition was to SET FIRE TO THE SUN. Doof had to explain to him why that was incredibly stupid.
  • Dramatic Irony: Phineas thinks the "scary" things Baljeet and Buford dress up as are lame, that he shrugs off. But Phineas has NO idea that Little Suzy is the devil child to Buford and Candace.
  • Droste Image: Doofenshmirtz shows Perry a series of charts showing how Doof was able to predict Perry's actions and trap him; it ends with Doofenshmirtz pointing at his own chart, which shows another Doofenshmirtz pointing at another chart, which shows yet another Doofenshmirtz pointing at another chart, etc.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Crossed with Not What It Looks Like. By the time Candace brings Mom home to show her the haunted house, it is gone, and only Baljeet is there, making it look like she's insulting him, and Mom finds it very rude.
  • The Elevator from Ipanema: When Candace goes down the haunted house elevator (with the inexplicable Giant Floating Baby Head), a muzak version of the title song is heard.
Candace: (to the baby head) Will you get outta here?!?!
  • Everyone Has Standards: Doofenshmirtz, who indulges in Poke the Poodle villain type plots exclusively, thinks his mentor’s grand plan to “set fire to the sun” was too much.
  • Failed Attempt at Scaring: Phineas set up a Haunted House to try and cure Isabella's hiccups. One of the rooms had Baljeet dressed up as the scariest thing he can imagine — a failed math test! Phineas and Isabella stare at him blankly before moving on.
  • Fake Static: When Candace realizes she called Jeremy's house, she nervously crumples a piece of paper and panically says, "We seem to be breaking up! Uh, I'm going into a tunnel. ¡No habla español!" Later, when Candace dials the number again, Little Suzy Johnson does the same paper crumpling trick, which Candace sees through.
  • Fireman's Safety Net: When Phineas falls out of the haunted house, Isabella and the Fireside Girls improvise a safety net out of their sashes to catch him.
  • Group Costume Fail: When several kids are trying to scare Isabella so she'll stop hiccupping, Phineas tells them to dress as "something scary". However, Baljeet and Buford ruin the theming, with the former dressing as a failed Math test and the latter dressing as Suzy Johnson, whom Phineas and Isabella don't know is actually an Enfant Terrible while Buford does.
  • Halloween Episode: Even though this doesn't take place around Halloween, it first aired around that time.
  • Haunted House: Phineas and Ferb made one to try and scare Isabella's hiccups away.
  • Hiccup Hijinks: Isabella’s problem for the episode is a bad case of hiccups.
  • Irony: In spite of wanting to get her brothers busted, Candace herself gets in trouble instead.
  • Mid-Battle Tea Break: Doofenshmirtz briefly calls time out during his fight with Perry to remove a hair from his mouth.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • At the start of the episode, Phineas and Ferb's big idea is a mariachi tree. Unfortunately, the mariacheros fall down from the tree destroying their instruments. Phineas surmises that they shouldn't have drank so much chocolate milk before their big idea.
    • The fact that Buford is terrified of Suzy Johnson suggests he had a run-in that revealed her true nature, but we never learn why exactly he's scared of her.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Every time Candace tries to show Linda the haunted house, it's gone and only Baljeet is there, making Linda think Candace is insulting him.
Candace: These little creeps destroyed our backyard leaving this ugly mess in its place!
Linda: Hi, Baljeet! ...That wasn't very nice, Candace.
  • Please, I Will Do Anything!: Doof misplaced his keys and Perry does not want to cooperate. Doof at first stubbornly says he will find them himself and "teach [him] the meaning of grace under fire." But one second later, Doof is begging on his knees and asking Perry what he wants him to do. Ten minutes later, Doof is doing a plate-spinning trick while balancing on a ball.
  • Psycho Poodle: Suzy has trained her poodle to bite, attack, and urinate on Candace at her command.
  • A Rare Sentence:
    • "I'm calling Mom! (closes door, opens door again) And I am not using the banana this time!" Lampshaded by Phineas:
Phineas: You guys heard that, right? It wasn't just me...?
  • Reactive Continuous Scream: When Candace runs into Buford in his Suzy Johnson costume (and Baljeet), the three end up screaming back and forth at each other.
  • Recycled Animation: The animation for the "Perry the Platypus" theme song is reused from The Stinger during the credits of "Lawn Gnome Beach Party of Terror!" as well as several past episodes of the series.
  • Scooby-Dooby Doors: Happens in one of the hallways in the haunted house as Candace gets chased by the monsters (and the Giant Floating Baby Head).
  • Ship Tease: Phineas spends nearly the entirety of the haunted house tour holding Isabella’s hand. At the end, what scares the hiccups out of her isn’t the sights of the haunted house, but the fear of losing him when he nearly falls to his death, and for bonus points, she gets to Bridal Carry him when they save him.
  • This Is the Part Where...: Doofenshmirtz, using visual aids, feigns surprise at Perry finding his hideout-shaped island.
Doofenshmirtz: Perry the Platypus? Here? How could this be? (fakes gasp) I'm shocked! I mean, it would have taken a total evil mastermind to have guessed that you tracked me to this point, find the secret hideout, gliding under the radar, and infiltrate through this access vent, make your way over to this crate, activating my automatic arm and leg restraint. Oh, right here? This Is the Part Where... I get all sarcastic and pretend you surprise me. (fake gasps) "Oh, Perry the Platypus, how?!" "What the?!" "Who the?!" "Why the?!" Oh, finally ending here, when I finally finish showing you my brilliant plan!"
  • Threat Backfire: Candace doesn't have a keen eye for metaphorical retorts.
Candace: Phineaaas! The only way you're building a haunted house in this backyard is over my dead body!
Phineas: (in a Romanian accent) That's the idea! BLAUGH!!!
  • Title Drop: In the beginning of Phineas' song as he guides Isabella through the haunted house to scare her hiccups away.
  • Tom the Dark Lord: Doofenshmirtz tells Perry about his mentor whom his island hideout belonged to, Professor Destructicon... or "Kevin" to his friends, which Doof refers him by as he continues his story.
  • You Can Run, but You Can't Hide: Played with when Phineas and Isabella leave Baljeet, who is dressed as a failed math test.
Baljeet: You can run, but it won't be to the college of your choice, I tell you!
