Recap / One Tree Hill S6E23 "Forever and Almost Always"

Go To

Peyton and Lucas' wedding day has finally arrived and surprise guests are in attendance. Haley plays an unexpected role in the ceremony while Nathan hopes to be called up to the NBA. Skills keeps Jamie on a short leash, and Brooke does the same with Nick Lachey.

Contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: When Haley sums up Lucas and Peyton’s first conversation as "and she was a bitch" during the ceremony, Peyton’s actually the one laughing hardest.
  • Actor Allusion: Julian rants about Brooke bringing Nick Lachey as her date, asking how he can compete with "the guy from Dancing with the Stars" & when Missy points out that he's thinking of Nick's brother, Julian then snaps "Laguna Beach then!" which Chase retorts was "Some other tool." The tool in question was Stephen Colletti, who plays Chase.
  • All for Nothing: Nathan tells Haley that Nino has been called up to the NBA by the Los Angeles Clippers, and muses that the Chiefs have never sent two players to the NBA in the same season.
  • As Himself: Nick Lachey, who apparently briefly dated Brooke during the four year time skip between Seasons 4 and 5.
  • Bland-Name Product: Lucas gets Haley ordained for the wedding on the fictional website, OneMinuteMinister.com.
  • Call-Back:
    • Skills spends the wedding watching Jamie like a hawk, to avoid a repeat of what happened at Lucas’ last wedding.
    • Haley breaks out the tin with the predictions she and Lucas used to write, as first seen in "First Day on a Brand New Planet" in Season 3; she specifically references Lucas’ "Peyton Sawyer will become Peyton Scott" prediction that he wrote in eighth grade, as mentioned in "What Comes After The Blues" from Season 5.
    • Haley mentions that Lucas and Peyton’s first meeting took place at the same lake they’re getting married at, and how mean Peyton was at the time, which took place in the Pilot.
    • When Lucas asks Peyton how she feels, she comments "Like a princess" after having previously dismissed the Princess for a Day trope in "One Million Billionth of a Millisecond on a Sunday Morning" earlier this season.
    • Parodied before the ceremony, when Nathan gives Lucas some last minute advice before the wedding.
Nathan: Whatever I said before Lindsey's wedding, just go with that.
Lucas: God, you suck at this.
  • Celebrity Paradox: Julian makes a reference to Laguna Beach to Chase, who is played by Stephen Colletti - who used to be on Laguna Beach.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Skills loses track of Jamie during the ceremony; the entire situation is Played for Laughs.
Haley: [In the middle of the ceremony] Really, Skills?
Skills: Jamie Scott! Macaulay! [Jamie is literally 5 feet away, petting a dog] Boy, get yo’ ass back over here.
  • Found Footage: Parodied by Mouth, who briefly uses his video camera to act like a character in such a movie whilst he makes his way to the wedding site.
  • Gilligan Cut: Julian cracks a joke about Nick’s old boyband, 98 Degrees, prompting an unimpressed look from the singer. The next thing that the viewer sees is Peyton giving Julian some ice to put on his brand new black eye.
  • Happy Ending Override: Newlyweds Lucas and Peyton return home, and Lucas heads to the garage to prepare Peyton’s wedding present - the repaired Comet. However, when Lucas returns to the house, he finds an unconscious Peyton on the floor.
  • Imperiled in Pregnancy: Peyton starts haemorrhaging blood and collapses shortly after she and Lucas return home.
  • Not So Above It All: Brooke initially chastises Lucas for getting her a pity date to the wedding, then wants to know what he looks like.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: When Brooke bursts into the tent where Peyton is getting ready for the wedding, she complains about Julian turning up with Missy without naming them, which leads to Haley assuming she’s talking about the bride and groom.
Brooke: I am SO pissed right now, that whore stole my man!
Haley: Okay but it’s their wedding day, so don’t you think it’s time you let it go?
  • Shipper on Deck: Lucas invites Julian to the wedding to be Brooke’s date.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Brooke name drops Hugo Boss whilst handing Lucas his wedding tux.
    • Skills gives Jamie the call sign "Macaulay."
    • Whilst complaining about Nick Lachey at the bar, Julian makes reference to Dancing with the Stars and Laguna Beach.
    • Julian makes a joke about Nick Lachey’s old boyband, 98 Degrees.
  • Tempting Fate: Peyton advises Haley to just use song lyrics if she gets stuck will conducting the ceremony; she winds up briefly using the lyrics from "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Poison before realising that they aren’t appropriate for a wedding.
Peyton: Poison? Of all the lyrics ever written, you’re gonna go with "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Poison?
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Julian delivers one to Victoria, comparing her to his own father and blaming Victoria for her daughter’s insecurities.
  • This Song Goes Out to TV Tropes: Before Mia’s performance of "Sweet Silver Lining" she briefly talks about the meaning of the song and how she wrote it for Peyton.
  • Titled After the Song: The episode title is taken from the song "Forever And Almost Always" by Kate Voegele.
  • Wall Bang Her: Nathan and Haley sneak off from the wedding reception, and have sex in one of the bathrooms.
  • Waxing Lyrical: Haley briefly uses the lyrics from "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Poison as she conducts the wedding ceremony.
  • Wedding Episode: After six seasons, Lucas and Peyton are finally married.
  • Wham Shot: As Peyton looks at the bedroom she shared with Lucas, done up as an impromptu honeymoon suite, the camera cuts to some of the white rose petals scattered across the floor before a drop of blood falls.
  • Written-In Absence: Karen, Andy, Lily, Larry and Derek are all absent from the wedding; Lucas comments that changing the wedding date didn’t give them enough time to get home.
