Recap / OKKO Lets Be Heroes S 3 E 11 Big Reveal

Go To

K.O. finds out who his father is.

Tropes:

  • Actually, I Am Him:
K.O.: I take it you've heard of him [Laserblast]?
Professor Venomous: Heard of him?! (Long, drawn-out Evil Laugh) Boy, take a good look. I am him.
  • Anti-Climax: One of the biggest mysteries in the series has always been who K.O.'s father is. K.O. just casually asks Carol during breakfast, and Carol just as casually tells him it's Laserblast, then the episode starts proper.
  • Big "NO!": K.O. lets out a variation of this in the form of "mom" upon realizing that Venomous is his father.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Boxman starts to say that he wanted the Luke, I Am Your Father reveal to be dragged out for another season, but Venomous shushes him.
  • Brick Joke: Boxman says that he wanted the big reveal to be dragged out for another season, but is ignored by Venomous. At the end, as they fly through the air thanks to a combined attack from K.O. and Carol, Boxman gives him an I Told You So about it.
  • Call-Back:
    • At the beginning, when Carol is recounting what happened to Laserblast, and later when Venomous is filling in some more details, parts of the Sandwich Incident flashback from "Let's Take a Moment" are shown again.
    • In that same episode, both Carol and Gar refer to whatever appeared to have happened to Laserblast and the "donut shop" as having been "shrunk, or teleported, or whatever". Here, when Carol fights Venomous and is asking him where he's been all these years, she says "We thought you were shrunk, or teleported, or...whatever!"
  • De-power: Laserblast lost his original powers to the same kind of orb that took away Dr. Greyman's.
  • Discard and Draw: After losing his original powers, Laserblast attempted to compensate for it with Bio-Augmentation. It apparently didn't work to his satisfaction, but he still made a lot of money off of his research.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Venomous and Carol agreeing to let K.O. hang out with the former on weekends so he can learn more about T.K.O. sounds much like a divorced couple discussing custody over their child.
  • Dramatic Unmask: Strangely inverted, as Venomous puts on his old mask to show he was Laserblast.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: This episode does, in fact, contain a big reveal.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: A non-verbal example: Carol insists Venomous can't be Laserblast, and attempts to demonstrate by putting Laserblast's helmet on and off him, which makes her notice they very clearly are the same person.
  • The Food Poisoning Incident: Mr. Gar gives K.O. a solo mission because Rad and Enid got sick from bad food and were throwing up.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Venomous notes how differently things would've gone had Greyman not stumbled into his lab.
  • Friendly Enemy: Carol and K.O. stop fighting Venomous for a moment to decide K.O. can visit his father on the weekend.
  • Hired to Hunt Yourself: Laserblast took P.O.I.N.T. on a mission to raid a lab that he secretly owned, planning to evacuate all its contents before the others came in.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Turns out that the lab from the Sandwich Incident and everything in it was created by Laserblast himself...including the red orbs that took away his powers (and Greyman's) forever, and the blue and green orbs that shrank and teleported his lab, and all his months of research in it.
  • I Am Not My Father: K.O. starts to worry about having "villain blood", but he resolves to choose to be a hero anyway.
  • Idiot Ball: Laserblast might not have had to become a villain at all, if he'd chosen to hide his secret lab as anything but a public donut shop.....or locked the door after he left.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Laserblast would've returned to the others after he survived the lab explosion if he hadn't overheard Carol say he wasn't powerful enough to survive his lab's destruction. She was highly emotional at the time and said it in the heat of the moment, but it caused him to (mistakenly) believe that her support of him had never been sincere, and he left the scene instead and allowed everyone to assume he died.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Venomous reveals that he's K.O.'s father in a manner directly referencing the Trope Namer.
  • Mama Bear: Carol is quick to attack Venomous once she believes her son is in trouble.
  • Once More, with Clarity: We see the Sandwich Incident again, but this time from Laserblast/Venomous's point of view, showing what really happened to him.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Carol had seen Laserblast without his mask, and never noticed Professor Venomous' having the same face until he put the mask on himself. Though it's possibly justified by the fact that he had a different skin color and very different build (since Laserblast lost most of his muscle mass over time after the accident), and even his hair was a slightly different color.
  • Power Misidentification: K.O. though Laserblast's power were his Eye Beams. Carol clarifies those just came from his helmet, which Laserblast absorbed his enemies' energy to power.
  • The Reveal:
    • Laserblast is K.O.'s dad.
    • Professor Venomous was Laserblast.
    • Laserblast owned the lab that exploded in the "Sandwich Incident", lost his powers in the process, and let everyone think it killed him.
  • Rule of Three: The three Spit Takes (see below), by a different character each time.
  • Shout-Out: The Luke, I Am Your Father scene is a direct homage to the trope namer.
  • Something Only They Would Say: Venomous calling Carol "Sparks" is what fully cements her realization that Venomous was Laserblast.
  • Spit Take:
    • K.O. performs one upon learning that his father was Laserblast.
    • Venomous also performs one when he learns that K.O. found out who his father was.
    • Happens a third time with Carol when she hears K.O.'s Big "NO!" and assumes he's in trouble.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Carol found out she was pregnant with K.O. shortly after Laserblast disappeared. Then she finds out here that he didn't die.
  • Two Aliases, One Character: As we find out here, Laserblast was his past identity as a hero, and Professor Venomous is his present identity as a villain.
  • The Unmasking: Inverted. Rather than take off his mask, Professor Venomous has to put on Laserblast's helmet to prove to K.O. he is Laserblast. Played straight later on when Carol doesn't recognize Professor Venomous as her lover until she removes his helmet (and does a couple double takes putting it back on).
  • Unpleasant Parent Reveal: K.O. was ecstatic to find out who his father was, but not who he became.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom:
    • Greyman stumbling onto Laserblast's lab and assuming it belonged to a villain had some devastating consequences for his friends.
    • Carol's claim that Laserblast wasn't powerful enough to survive the lab's destruction (and him overhearing this and assuming the worst of what she meant by it) led to her lover becoming a villain.
  • Was It All a Lie?: Laserblast feels this way about Carol's claims he's strong in his own way when he overhears her bemoan he wasn't "strong enough" to survive the explosion.
  • We Can Rule Together: Venomous offers K.O. to tag along during his supervillainy. K.O. actually accepts, because he would just be hanging around in hopes of understanding his own inner darkness—although K.O. already had a mission pending, so they decide to reschedule.
  • Wham Episode: K.O.'s father is Laserblast...and Laserblast isn't just alive, but he's taken up a new identity: Professor Venomous.
  • Wham Line:
    • Played with in the beginning of the episode, in that the line in question is genuinely huge and changes the story in a big way, but it's casually revealed while K.O. and Carol are eating breakfast.
K.O.: (calmly eating oatmeal) So...who's my dad?
      Carol:(calmly drinking coffee) Laserblast.
      (K.O. does a Spit Take)
    • However, played completely straight with the bigger reveal later in the episode when K.O. goes up against Professor Venomous wearing Laserblast's helmet:
K.O. This helmet belonged to my daddy, the great hero Laserblast! I take it you've heard of him?
Venomous: Heard of him? (Evil Laugh) Boy, take a good look: I am him.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Played with. Laserblast is past the point of being a hero. All the same, Carol calls out Professor Venomous on allowing everyone to think he died, as well as essentially walking out on his girlfriend and unborn son.
  • Wrong Assumption: The "unknown villain" whose lab Dr. Greyman discovered wasn't a villain—not yet, anyway.
  • You Didn't Ask: A variant; Carol honestly thought she had already told K.O. who his father was.
