Recap / Legends Of Tomorrow S 5 E 1 Meet The Legends

Go To

Having become famous, the Legends invite a camera crew on board as they tangle with Rasputin.

Tropes

  • Affably Evil: Rasputin is pretty chummy with Nate and even chats with his minions about the best way to go about hamming it up for the camera.
  • Amnesia Missed a Spot: Everyone might have forgotten about Zari, but Gideon has evidence proving that Zari traveled with the team, as well as the fact that she was abruptly switched with Behrad after Nate's resurrection.
  • And I Must Scream: Despite being reduced to a pile of guts, Rasputin is still alive and conscious.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Zari recorded a hologram where she confessed her love for Nate. Nate has no idea who she is, although he is interested in finding out about her.
  • The Apprentice: Gary has become this to Constantine, courtesy of Nora, much to the latter's chagrin.
  • Artistic License – History: Rasputin is...loosely based on the historical figure. Very loosely. As ever.
  • Backstory Invader: It seems that Behrad has taken over not only Zari's position in the team, but also any previous memories the team had with her, right down to having the nickname "Bee", a reference to how Zari was nicknamed "Zee".
  • Bash Brothers: Behrad has this dynamic with Ray and Nate.
  • Battle Couple: Ava and Sara hash out their issues while fighting Rasputin's goons. They finish off the last one as a team.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Invoked when Sara bends Ava over for a Gone With The Wind type kiss. Ava gets a big grin and promptly faints while Sara gives the camera thumbs up.
  • Brain Bleach: Sara and Ava are both about to throw up at the sight of Constantine drinking Rasputin's remains.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Rasputin hypnotizes several Russian soldiers to attack Sara, including Behrad in disguise. Then he hypnotizes Nate, Mona and Mick to kill the imperial family, and Sara and Ava have to fight them.
  • But Now I Must Go: Mick hands the Rebecca Silver mantle over to Mona, who immediately (and abruptly) declares that she'll miss living on the Waverider and starts collecting her things, much to Mick's confusion.
  • Butt-Monkey: Kevin Harris, the documentary director, has no luck throughout the episode. He gets ridiculed, pushed around, put in mortal danger, and at the end the Legends destroy his premiere by claiming that they are just frauds, leaving him humiliated.
  • The Cameo: The documentary's opening features four clips of people reacting to the Legends' exploits after they became famous. These are actually real-life YouTubers (namely BlindWave, Free Bicycle Tours, abnormallyadam, and Married2theReal who regularly do reaction videos to the series and the clips used are in fact real. Though unfortunately, they actually had to give permission for the clips and thus we couldn’t actually see them discover they were in the show.
  • Casual Danger Dialog: Between Ava and Sara when fighting Rasputin's goons, with Ava apologizing to Sara for ignoring her pain.
  • Catchphrase: Ray suddenly is searching for one and goes through a few losers before finding "Size matters".
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Ava thinks telling Sara she hoped she was never in love with her dead friend (in a condolence card!) is a good idea.
Ava: I didn't think my card was awkward.
  • Cosmic Retcon: Behrad has replaced his sister Zari on the team, not due to the Crisis but rather them changing their future in the season prior.
  • Dramatic Irony: Rasputin assumes that his resurrection is the work of God. Not so much.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Sara is shown frequently drinking while coping with the loss of Oliver. Dealing with a documentary crew on the Waverider and her more-difficult-than-usual teammates doesn't help.
  • Evil Is Hammy: Gets actually exploited, with Sara goading Rasputin to ham it up in front of the camera, while she throws Ray inside of him.
  • Famed In-Story: The Legends getting recognition after the Season 4 finale. The kind of fame Ray got, however, was not the good kind...
  • Fate Worse than Death: Even after being blown to bits and stuffed into jars, Rasputin is actually still alive and conscious!
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The news ticker at the bottom of the screen at the beginning of the episode mentions, among other things, that "Ryan Reynolds to star in Detective Beebo film".
  • From a Single Cell: Apparently this is how deep Rasputin's invincibility runs. Even after The Atom exploded him from the inside, the Legends needed to keep the various parts of his remains separate from each other or else he would reform himself.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity:
    • Ray's reputation took a hit due to being the face of humanity's near-damnation when he was possessed by Neron.
    • At the end of the episode, the Legends blow the premiere of the documentary by claiming that it was all fake and special effects, making them appear as frauds to the public. They decide that this is better than constant spotlight.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: A Time Bureau file doesn't pull any punches about Ava's lack of social graces. Said report was written by Ava herself.
  • Hidden Depths: Rasputin is able to see that a piece of Nate's heart (meaning, Zari) is missing.
  • Historical In-Joke: The urban legend of Rasputin's death is milked for all it's worth.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Behrad hands Sara a drink as they watch the other Legends make asses of themselves on their first attempt to subdue Rasputin. She very gladly accepts.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Oh, so much, mainly in regards to the recent crossover. Ava's last line after Constantine goes to Hell is that people would probably have trouble following what's happening on the ship if they were still in the spotlight.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: The majority of the Legends are unaware of the events of the Crisis.
  • Lock-and-Load Montage: There is one when the Legends go and confront Rasputin.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: Ray embiggens himself while inside Rasputin, blowing him up.
  • Mockumentary: The focus of the episode.
  • Mundane Utility: Behrad is much more casual about how he uses the Air Totem than Zari was. He uses a blast of air to flip Nate on an inversion table and also uses the totem to clear the air after smoking weed.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: Rasputin, after being resurrected, proves himself to be pretty much unkillable now. Even after he gets blown to Ludicrous Gibs, he is still alive!
  • No Social Skills: Ava's attempt to make Sara feel better with a condolence card includes mentioning the fact that Sara was having an affair with Oliver behind her sister's back when the latter two were dating, as well as hoping that Sara never loved him. Thankfully, she doesn't actually manage to give Sara the card after overhearing how much Sara dislikes them.
  • Old Friend: John and Gary are called to do an exorcism. The demon possessing the kid, Masher, is actually an old friend of John's and so they share a drink before John eventually sends him back to Hell.
  • Out of Focus: Both Charlie and Nora only have very short screentime in this episode, with the latter not even getting any lines.
  • Passing the Torch: Mick lets Mona be the new Rebecca Silver.
  • Poor Communication Kills: The Legends split up to tackle Rasputin in different ways. The different groups wind up cladhing with ea ch other during the actual confrontation that it only made things worse.
  • Put on a Bus: Mona leaves to take up the writing mantle of Rebecca Silver from Mick.
  • Refuge in Audacity: John deals with, and is familiar with, a demon possessing a young boy. Said demon requests a drink, with zero complaints from John. Their next scene shows both of them being kicked out of a bar for attempting to get alcohol for an underage child.
  • Sealed Evil in a Six Pack: Or, in this case, a number of condiment jars. That should hold him.
  • Self-Deprecation: To discredit the documentary about them, the Legends point out how so much of what happens in it doesn't make sense. But since the documentary is an accurate depiction of a Legends mission, they're really pointing out how Legends of Tomorrow itself doesn't make sense.
  • Series Continuity Error: Behrad shows the camera crew his newborn self ("literally yesterday") at the hospital, despite his mother being heavily pregnant over half a year ago. Likely an alteration brought upon by the Crisis.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Special Effect Failure: Invoked. The Legends convince the public that the documentary was entirely staged and fake, and Mona dismisses the footage of their superpowers as not even being a good fake.
Mona: The special effects were kinda questionable.
  • Stylistic Suck: The "A.T.O.M. Cam" footage certainly qualifies. Ray's conspicuously superimposed head on a smaller digital double evokes a cheesier tone than most of the CGI in the episode, landing on something of a bobblehead aesthetic instead of the "downward perspective" angle it's intended to portray. Coupled with his decidedly hammier facial expressions during the action beats and the cringey one-liners throughout, the end result feels like a spoof of the increasingly ubiquitous 'close-up inside helmet' trend that superhero media has codified nowadays (which this show plays straight on occasion).
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • Given the Legends publicly introducing themselves at the end of "Hey World", it's little wonder they became celebrities during the Time Skip.
    • Neron's possession of Ray caused the latter's reputation with the public to take a hit. Again.
    • John takes Masher out for a drink. But since the latter is currently possessing a minor, they are promptly thrown out of the club they went to.
    • A fugitive impersonating a Senator puts the Time Bureau, whose job was to keep fugitives in protective custody, in jeopardy.
    • Sara's a trained assassin. A cameraman will never be able to sneak a shot of her at any point in time.
    • Due to the Crisis technically never occurring as far as those not involved or informed are concerned, the Legends who stayed behind are unaware of the details on what happened and how much it affected those that did participate.
    • Sara is pissed that her people allowed a film crew aboard the ship without so much as a heads-up, especially since she's still reeling from the Crisis.
  • Time-Shifted Actor: Behrad visits his newborn self in the hospital.
  • What Could Possibly Go Wrong?: "What could go wrong?" asks Ava...about letting a documentary crew follow the Legends around.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Sara calls out the rest of the team for deciding to do a documentary so soon after the Crisis, when they are still technically mourning for Oliver. She is particularly angry that they consciously decided not to discuss him within her earshot, when all she wants is for her to have a frank discussion with them about him.
  • You Are in Command Now: With Sara off saving the universe and the Time Bureau being shut down, Ava took over as acting captain in the meantime.
