Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 12 E 10 Dennis Double Life

Go To

"Guys, this is Mandy... and this is little Brian Jr. He's my son."
— Dennis

When Dennis reveals that he has an infant son resulting from a one night stand in North Dakota, the rest of the gang come up with various plans to help him out of his predicament: Mac suggests that he and Dennis pretend to be a couple, while Frank wants to bribe the child's mother with an "indecent proposal". Meanwhile, Charlie comes up with a plan to win over the Waitress once and for all by getting her pregnant.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Babies Make Everything Better: Dennis is so moved by holding his son that he decides to move to North Dakota in order to become a father and a better person.
  • The Baby Trap: Inspired by Dennis' predicament, Charlie comes up with a plan to get the Waitress pregnant and ensure that she'll be tied to him forever.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Charlie has spent at least 15 years trying to seduce the Waitress. He prepares a presentation with a promise to take care of her and any children, which wins her over and they have sex. Afterwards she starts making requests surrounding living together and having a family, and he is suddenly exhausted with the reality of being with her.
  • But Now I Must Go: After saying goodbye to his son and things returning to normal at the bar, Dennis decides he is done with this life and declares he is going to move to North Dakota to be a father to his son. The entire revelation and walking out the door takes about a minute and a half.
  • Call-Back:
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Before leaving, Dennis chews Frank out for his own shortcomings as a father.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Mac uses the RPG he bought Dennis for Valentine's day to blow up Dennis' car after he leaves at the end of the episode.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Dead Guy Junior: Played with; Brian Jr.'s namesake, the real Brian LeFevre, was stabbed to death by a crackhead outside Paddy's several years ago. However, Mandy remains blissfully unaware of this fact and thought she was naming him after his still-living father.
  • Did Not Think This Through: In his excitement to seduce the Waitress by promising her a baby, Charlie seems to pay very little consideration to what that will mean for him in the long run if she actually does get pregnant.
  • Faking the Dead: Dennis attempts to do this in a last-ditch attempt to get rid of Mandy, telling her that he's a special agent named Dane Brass before he's "assassinated" in front of her. Unsurprisingly, she sees through the ploy.
  • Faux Yay: Mac and Dennis pretend to be a gay couple to allow Dennis a way out of the situation with Mandy.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Charlie successfully convinces the Waitress to sleep with him so she can conceive a child. He is quickly annoyed when she plans to move in with him.
  • Harmful to Minors: At one point Dee lifts Brian Jr. above her head and yells that she's going to "smash it".
  • Heel Realization: Dennis clearly has some sort of emotional epiphany when holding his son, and shortly thereafter renounces the bar to leave for North Dakota to support him.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • Charlie becomes annoyed with the Waitress constantly calling him and accuses her of stalking him. Dee points out that he's been stalking her over for 15 years.
    • Charlie and Frank accuse Dee of being emotional as they're looking for eggs while panicking.
  • Hysterical Woman: The guys all seem to believe that women are fundamentally ruled by their emotions and incapable of rational thought.
Mac: As we all know, everything is about emotion with women. Right, Dee?
    Dee: What?
    Dennis: Alright, Dee, relax.
Mac: We're trying to have a rational conversation, okay?
  • Minnesota Nice: Mandy is a sweetheart and a doting parent. Even when she realizes that the Gang is a bunch of lunatics, she still takes it in stride.
  • Modesty Bedsheet: Charlie and the Waitress after having sex.
  • Only Sane Man: Mainly Dee who finally gets her house to her self but is forced to put with the gang's insane crap when they crash in.
  • Put on a Bus: Dennis leaves Philadelphia at the end of the episode in order to be a father in North Dakota.
  • Shout-Out: Frank's idea to get rid of Mandy is to offer he an "indecent proposal".
  • Stock Sitcom Grand Finale: Parodied at the end of the episode. Dennis turns the lights off and declares that "the bar is done" as he leaves Paddy's for the final time, only for the rest of the gang to immediately protest that it doesn't really apply as they're still there.
  • There Is Only One Bed: Mac tries to invoke this by only ordering one bed for the newly-refurbished apartment, so that Dennis will have to sleep with him. Dennis defies this by choosing to sleep on the floor instead.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Dee is annoyed by Frank and Charlie running to her apartment in order to avoid the Waitress, just as she's celebrating Mac and Dennis finally moving out.
Dee: What is happening here?! I just got rid of two annoying roommates, this is not supposed to be happening!
  • Undercover as Lovers: Mac suggests that he and Dennis pretend to be a couple so that Mandy will see that Dennis isn't emotionally available to her. Dennis goes along with it somewhat reluctantly, while Mac seems to get a little too into it.
  • Wanting Is Better Than Having: Charlie begins to find the Waitress annoying after he finally gets his wish and has sex with her.
  • Wham Episode:
    • It's discovered that Dennis is a father and decides to leave Philadelphia for North Dakota, with no intention of returning.
    • Charlie manages to win over the Waitress and have sex with her, only to discover that he doesn't really like being around her.
