Recap / Inside Job S1 E2 "Clone Gunman"

Go To

Cognito Inc. runs out of money after the events of the previous episode, leaving Brett and Reagan to decide which department to liquidate in order to make up for the expenses. This makes the whole gang now trying to kiss ass to keep their departments safe, which Reagan comes to enjoy.

Tropes:

  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: Reagan quickly allows her co-workers' fake praise to go to her head, finding it a nice change of pace from their usual apathy and contempt.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: The cloning department is cool, but loaded with redundancies, as there really aren't that many situations where you'd need multiple Rasputins or a small army of Avril Lavignes. As Reagan notes, the storage and refrigeration costs alone make the department horribly inefficient.
  • Body Horror: The cloning lab head researcher has a tumor of herself growing out of her head, fully self-aware.
  • Brick Joke: At karaoke, Reagan drunkenly claims that Avril Lavigne died in 2003 and was replaced by a clone (referencing a real life conspiracy theory). When JFK frees all the clones, several Avrils are among them.
  • The Cameo: Among the clones of historical figures and celebrities besides JFK there are Karl Marx, Elvis Presley, Tupac Shakur, Rasputin, The Beatles (in their "Sgt. Pepper's" outfits) and Avril Lavigne. The latter sounds like a random gag, but there's an actual conspiracy theory positing that Lavigne died in 2003 and was replaced by a look-alike since then.
  • Chekhov's Gun: A double whammy, with the warning that clones can't be exposed to heat and Brett's body spray. When he uses his body spray as a makeshift flamethrower against the JFK clones, they turn into a fleshy monstrous blob.
  • Continuity Nod: Reagan still has the gun she took from the Secret Service and modified to act as a lasergun from Unpresidented and tries to use it against the JFK's.
  • Cool Old Guy: Noel is old, but is still nearly Loved by All at Cognito, and hasn't lost his skills either.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Scheimpough didn't forsee Rand getting sober before their meeting at the diner, which removed his leverage over Rand and placed Rand in an advantageous negotiating position over him.
  • Face Full of Alien Wing-Wong: Apparently this is the reason why JFK was assassinated; he had sex with an alien from Roswell and got impregnated, so he had to be killed before the eggs hatched inside of him.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: You can actually read the deal that Rand gives J.R.
First up, a piece of JR's percentage of the company. Second up an unlimited amount of livers, made available on demand, and delivered on ice to my home address. In exchange I do solemnly vow to keep private all descriptions, photos, and depictions of any kind of JR's weird dick and or balls on any and all social media platforms in perpetuity.
  • He Cleans Up Nicely: Rand's withdraw from alcohol allowed him to clean up his act, becoming sober long enough to look presentable as he negotiates with J.R. for more liver harvesting, as well as the CEO's piece of company stock.
  • Historical In-Joke: Myc is made to dress up as Marilyn Monroe and sing "Happy Birthday To You" in order to distract the mutated JFK clones, an allusion to how the real Marilyn Monroe sang a very sultry version of the song for JFK's 45th birthday in 1962.
  • I Take Offense to That Last One: The JFK clones refuse to listen to Reagan because she's "a broad who's only a four." Reagan snaps back that she's "at least a seven with filters."
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Noel manages to shoot the JFK spider head using a rifle with one hand.
  • Kill and Replace: The whole point of the cloning facility is to knock off people and replace them with clones.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: After the cloning debacle, Reagan claims to have downsized the whole department to cut costs, placating J.R. since the bottom line is all he cares about.
  • Literal Metaphor: There are literal sheeple in the clone lab. As in half-sheep, half-humans. Reagan snaps at them to wake up when they're in her way.
  • Loved by All: Noel is the most well-liked person in the company, and finding out that Reagan fired him turns everyone against her and Brett.
  • Meaningful Name: Meaningful Nickname, more like. Turns out the man who shot JFK is named Noel Atkinson. Nickname "Grassy Noel". As in, the second gunman on the Grassy Knoll.
  • Me's a Crowd: Clone JFK goes about waking numerous copies of himself, causing the situation to spiral out of control.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Since Reagan never socializes with any of her co-workers and Brett is the new guy, neither are aware that Noel is beloved by everyone until after they've canned him.
  • Pun-Based Creature: The sheeple are human-sheep hybrids.
  • Sexiness Score: The JFK clones refuse to listen to Reagan because she's "only a four." Reagan snaps back that she's "at least a seven with filters."
  • Shout-Out:
  • Smoking Hot Sex: As Myc excretes, which is played out like an orgasm, one of the people tending him yells for someone to get a cigarette.
  • Stress Vomit: Brett vomits over the fact that he has to keep a secret and fire someone, out of fear he won't be liked.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Rand wants to continue drinking, even after going through multiple liver replacements. He spends the episode convincing Reagan and J. R. to deliver him more after Cognito Inc's organ-farming program was shut down.
  • Verbal Tic: The JFK clones repeatedly say "Er, uh" and "furthermore", even when they combine into a huge, hideous blob monster.
  • Who Shot JFK?: Noel shot JFK after the latter had sex with an alien from Roswell and got impregnated.
