Recap / Inside Job S1 E3 "Blue Bloods"

Go To

After J.R. accidentally insults the Reptoids, the gang has to make nice to secure funding for Cognito Inc.

Tropes:

  • An Arm and a Leg: Reagan's malfunctioning robot arms rip off the Reptoid leader's arms.
  • Bookcase Passage: Parodied. When Andre and Myc try to find the orgy and run into a dead end, they start furiously shuffling through a bookcase for a hidden passage. Doing so causes the wall behind them to flip around, revealing said orgy, only to immediately swing back before they notice. It even cuts off one of their tails when it flips back, but the pair remain oblivious.
  • Double-Meaning Title: The Reptoids have literal blue blood, and most of the world's blue bloods (i.e. royalty and nobility) are Reptoids in disguise.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Reagan's coworkers are all horrified by her four robot arms, with Myc even saying it brings her one step closer to being a supervillain.
    • The frat Reptoids hazing Brett are genuinely horrified when Brett reveals just how bad his mental health is.
    • When Reagan hears about the rough night Brett had, she gives him an Anger Born of Worry speech that his frat bros weren't actually his friends but rather bullies. She says that real friends don't make you miserable for their own amusement, but treat you like a human being. Brett later takes this to heart and refers to Reagan as his best friend during her trial. Despite the circumstances, Reagan is touched.
    • The Reptoids are so horrified by Rand's neglect that they grant Reagan an unishment in the form of a group hug/orgy. She also has to attend court-mandated therapy; Reagan is fine with that since it's better than going to jail.
  • Fantastic Racism:
    • The episode starts when J.R. posts a meme about Reptoids on his social media that they didn't take well. He has everyone take part in sensitivity training to prepare negotiations with the Reptoids so that they can gain more of their funding.
    • Reagan's speech to the Reptoids goes over well in part because she says Reptoids and Humans are both better than Atlanteans.
  • Flipping the Bird: When Myc says that Reagan building robot arms makes her closer to becoming a supervillain, she does this with the robot arms.
  • Freudian Excuse: It is revealed that the reason why Reagan is traumatized by the thought of hugging someone was because her dad build a giant companion robot for that specific purpose, and had continued hugging her at the worst times towards her adulthood. This ends up clearing her of charges in court after being made to perform a group hug with the Reptoids.
  • Glass-Shattering Sound: Reagan insists she's fine to Brett before screaming into a paper bag, popping the bag and cracking the window behind her.
  • Hates Being Touched: Reagan has a pathological aversion to hugs, punching Brett out for even attempting it. It stems from Rand building the hulking robot Bear-O to hug her because he couldn't be bothered.
  • Hope Spot:
    • Reagan gives a killer speech about the reptoids when Brett is a no-show. She does well...and gets champagne on her arms, which causes the robotics to go haywire. Reagan then accidentally rips the arms off the reptoid leader. Later, however, he accepts her Apology Gift of robot arms until his real ones grow back.
    • A naked Brett sees that Reagan is in trouble while driving; he yells at her to get in the car, and they make their getaway. They start talking about how their nights went, and Reagan admits she has gaps in her memory. Cue a squad of reptoid police cars that corner them, and arrest Reagan.
  • Hurricane of Puns:
    • At one point, Reptoid identities are shown on screens in the background, and their names are all reptile-themed plays on celebrity names.
    • When a doctor is reading out to Andre all the STIs he caught, almost all of them are playing off of actual STI names, but with a reptile theme.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Elliot Mothman dumps a sampler bottle of rum into his coffee while testifying at Reagan’s trial.
  • Kangaroo Court: Subverted with the Reptoid court trying Reagan for assault. She is clearly guilty of the crime, while still covered in blue blood. Judge Judy is revealed to be a Reasonable Authority Figure: when Rand reveals Bear-O, who assaults Reagan by hugging her while she's screaming for Bear-O to stop, Judge Judy remits Reagan's sentencing from having her arms ripped off to court-mandated therapy and a group hug orgy.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Reagan invents the Productivitron — four thought-controlled mechanical arms — to make her more productive. Myc says it takes her one step closer to being a supervillain. Unfortunately, the dangerous part comes when the arms malfunction.
  • Nothing Personal: Brett's defense of Reagan at her trial boils down to this. As a witness, he explains that it wasn't Reagan's intention to assault the reptoid leader; she has a weird defense mechanism. Brett shows off the bruise he got from Reagan punching him for attempting a hug, and she's his best friend.
  • No Water Proofing In The Future: Reagan fails to waterproof her robot arms, causing them to go haywire when she spills champagne on them during her speech.
  • Obituary Montage: During the reptoid annual gala, an In Memoriam 2021 of the Reptoids which were lost over the last year is shown. The hosts announce it in a heart-felt manner and some guests are sobbing. Given the Reptoids' several-century lifespans, it makes sense that they are hit especially hard by the loss of a guy called Zurlock the Merciless, circa 500 BCE.
  • A Party, Also Known as an Orgy: Andre and Myc are convinced that Reptoid gatherings are actually this, but fail to find the sex party during the gala. Then Reagan's court-mandated group hug degenerates into an orgy and the two horndogs jump right in, only for Andre to come down with multiple cross-species STDs.
  • Pet the Dog: Rand comes to see Reagan's trial, and he admits on the stand that he could have given her more affection, treating her like a daughter rather than a pawn, when she cross-examines him. The only line that it seems Rand won't cross is letting Reagan go to jail for a trauma he caused.
  • Sensitivity Training: After J.R. accidentally insults the Secret Reptilian Overlords, the entire team is forced to go to sensitivity training before attending the annual reptoid banquet.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Andre finally gets to participate in his orgy...and since he had so much unprotected sex with so many partners, he ends up with multiple STDs.
  • Take That!: A long list of celebrities are secretly Reptoids. Mark Zuckerberg in particular gets mocked.
  • Trauma Button: Turns out hugging is one for Reagan, due to having had traumatic experiences from being hugged by Bear-O. She does not let her father off the hook once she realizes this and her repressed memories end up flooding back.
  • Wacky Fratboy Hijinks: Brett discovers two of his frat brothers from Yale are Reptoids, and they trick him into crawling naked and blindfolded through rat-infested air ducts. Deconstructed and subverted, as the two never actually cared about Brett in the first place and are tricking him into doing so because it's funny, while Brett goes along with it because he believes it'll get him closer to the two.
  • With Friends Like These...: Reagan says nuts to this sort of thinking to Brett. She says that the frat bros aren't his friends, but bullies that used him as a punching bag when she hears how his night went. Real friends care about your well-being and accept you the way you are. Brett realizes that Reagan cares about him, and refers to her as his best friend at her trial.
