Desperate times call for desperate measures as Alfur faces questions from the Elf Kingdom over his exciting reports from Trolberg.

Song at the end: "Hilda's Theme" by Ryan Carlson

Tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: This episode acts as one for Alfur.
  • Bavarian Fire Drill: In order to save the other elves, Alfur pretends to be a deputy for the spirit safety patrol, there to apprehend the "rogue spirits". Deputy Gerda, believing him, signs the paperwork to transfer custody over to Alfur.
  • Berserk Button: For Agnes, it is bringing up paper work or asking her to surrender anything. It causes her to blow her cover very quickly.
  • Breather Episode: Notably less tense than the previous episode, as well as a light warm-up act before the double-length finale of the season.
  • Call-Back: Of the previous adventures listed by Alvin, in order we have The Troll Rock, The Tide Mice, and The Lost Clan. See Cassandra Truth below for more details.
  • The Cameo: The Great Raven appears as a portrait in Alfur's room.
  • Cassandra Truth: Alfur is being replaced because his accounts of his adventures with Hilda are believed to be too outlandish to be accurate. They changed their mind when, after going through one of the adventures in Trolberg, they realize he really does go through all this constantly. Lampshaded by one of the head counsel when he remarks that nobody's going to believe it when they write about what they went through. The only elf who not only believes him the entire time, but is absolutely fascinated at what she reads is Adeline.
  • Door Dumb: When Alfur tries to flee into a light house decoration, he first tries to pull the door open, which fails, only to discover it opens the other way when, in exhaustion, he leans against it.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: During Hilda and Alfur's break-in of the Safety Patrol Headquarters, they run past a bunker that houses a machine that resembles a giant flashlight. This is a quick nod to the giant torch gun from Hilda and the Mountain King and which appears again in the movie special.
  • Improvised Parachute: Alfur uses a lettuce leaf as a parachute during the chase on the market.
  • Invisible to Normals: For once in a long time, the elves interact with people who haven't filled out the paperwork to see them, but can still hear them and see the things they throw around. This causes them to be mistaken for spirits.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Alfur is well aware of the process of returning home, which starts with surrendering his passport. He, instead, decides to run off, if only to stall for time. If not for the situation of his fellow elves being captured, requiring him to save them, he would have been in worse trouble if he was caught.
  • Palette Swap: Alvin looks like Alfur except with blue clothes, horizontal eyes and a mustache.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise:
    • Agnes in Alfur's clothing fools everyone except Alvin.
    • Parodied when Alfur tells the Lost Clan and the Delegation to stop fighting, and removes Agnes' cloak and eyepatch. The Delegation doesn't manage to recognize him until he yells that he's Alfur.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: Alvin incredulously asks Alfur if he's mad when Hilda tells him to jump from atop a lighthouse figure on a sign. He's thoroughly shocked to see Alfur jump without hesitation.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: When the other elves are captured, Alvin suggests the usual protocol for rescue that could take hours, if not days, to process. Naturally, Hilda and Alfur decide to bypass this and hurry to rescue them.
  • Security Cling: When Deputy Gerda is about to pour a pitcher of water down the lighthouse where the elves are, thereby drowning them, Bartell pulls Adeline towards him in fear and need of protection, with her doing the same.
  • Ship Tease: At the end of the episode, Alfur asks Adeline if she'd like to co-author a report on the Delegation's adventures in Trolberg while blushing. Adeline blushes as well and agrees.
  • Waking Up Elsewhere: At the start of the episode, Alfur goes to sleep in his own house, but when he wakes up, his bed and all his other belongings are on the floor of Hilda’s bedroom, having been moved there by Alvin.
