Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E15 "I'm Bored"

Go To

Gretel is extremely bored. However, by stating that out loud, she catches the attention of her mom Carolina, who puts her on house-cleaning duty since it means Gretel has nothing else to do. Kevin, along with Hamster, narrowly escape Carolina's sight, meaning the two can have a buddy-buddy adventure without Gretel. The two learn of a collapsing building, only for them to fall in a trap set by a rodent-hating cyborg called the X-Terminator.

Tropes:

  • Affably Evil: X-Terminator's evilness is solely focused on rodents. When Kevin gets trapped with Hamster, X-Terminator leaves him elsewhere with a note and 20 bucks for the inconvenience, and when Hamster corrects him that Stomps, the rabbit that can do math, is not a rodent, X-Terminator willingly lets Stomps go.
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: Gretel shows up right after X-Terminator has been dealt with.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: X-Terminator leaves a note to Kevin apologizing for knocking him out with gas by mistake and gave him $20.
  • Freudian Excuse: X-Terminator was once a regular person working at a science lab, who built a robotic rat trap to deal with a rat infestation, and it managed to catch nearly all of them. When he was about to activate its extermination function, however, one uncaught rat startled him, causing him to accidentally activate his lab partner's project, which can merge things together. He blames rodents for him no longer being human, which is why he wants to eradicate every rodent in the world.
  • Indy Escape: Kevin helps Hamster defeat the Pi-Rat by fooling it into cutting the cables holding up the spherical cage they're on until only two cables are left. Hamster then runs, making the cage rotate until it comes loose... and rolls after Kevin.
  • Knockout Gas: Hamster and Kevin fall victim to this, even if it were actually meant for the former and Gretel.
  • Lazy Husband: Gender-Inverted. The moment Dave says he's bored, Carolina makes him do the housework instead of Gretel so she can continue relaxing.
  • Long List: After Gretel finished cleaning the bathroom, her mom gives her a list of chores to do, Gretel was not happy about this.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: Pi-Rat is a robot pirate rat.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Kevin when he hears Gretel saying I'm bored and ends up jumping out the window wit Hamster.
    • Dave also had this when Carolina caught him saying the same words.
  • Opening Shout-Out: Kevin explicitly calls Hamster a "domesticated rodent" while they're hiding outside their apartment.
  • Pass the Popcorn: X-Terminator pauses the fight between Hamster and the Pi-Rat so he can make some nachos.
  • Punny Name:
    • X-Terminator's name is a pun on "Terminator" and "exterminator", given that he's a cyborg that's determined to eradicate all rodents.
    • The X-Terminator's trump card, the Pi-Rat, is basically a Hurricane of Puns, which name is a pun on multiple things. For one, it's a (robot) rat with the Pi symbol on its chest, and it's also a pirate, and it cooks pie as well.
  • Running Gag: Kevin complaining that he's sixteen whenever he's called a kid.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
    • After hearing Gretle saying she is so bored, Kevin and Hamster jumped out of the window to avoid cleaning the house.
    • Later, after Dave said he's bored, Carolina told Gretel she's free to go and the little girl yelled "FREEDOM!" and went to find Kevin.
  • Shout-Out: The "Rabbits are lagomorphs" statement is carried over from Phineas and Ferb, another Dan Povenmire show.
  • Taxonomic Term Confusion: X-Terminator is under the impression that the most powerful rodent after Hamster is Stomps, a rabbit that can do math. Hamster correctly points out that rabbits are lagomorphs, not rodents.
  • Tempting Fate: Never say "I'm bored" at home when Carolina's around. She'll see your boredom as the perfect opportunity to make you clean the house. Learned the hard way by Gretel, and eventually Dave.
  • Trapped the Wrong Target: Hamster and Kevin fall victim to X-Terminator's trap, but the X-Terminator intended to trap Hamster and Gretel. Since he mostly targeted Hamster, X-Terminator kept him, but drove Kevin elsewhere and left him in the minivan with a note. He even was nice enough to leave 20 dollars for the inconvenience.
