Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E14 "Birthday Besties"

Go To

Gretel's favorite day of the year has arrived: that being, her best friend Bailey's birthday! She's excited to go to her birthday party and have fun. However, a birthday party-destroying scoundrel has been loose in the city as of recent, so she, Hamster and Kevin have to look out and catch the vandal before they ruin Bailey's party too.

Tropes:

  • Animate Inanimate Object: The "party pooper" is in fact a sentient bouncy castle, who doesn't even know how it got alive in the first place. Turns out that two weeks prior, the superpower-granting aliens were in the process of bestowing a pair of kids with superpowers as the male alien spilled some orange juice, causing them to bestow a nearby bouncy castle with superpowers instead.
  • Birthday Episode: This episode takes place on Bailey's birthday.
  • Freudian Excuse: After becoming alive, the bouncy castle has become aware of all the years children have been mercilessly bouncing on him (some having neglected to clip their toenails for weeks, others wearing shoes with cleats). So, as revenge, it proceeds to trample their birthday parties the same way.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: While the angry clown may be innocent, the actual perp was also shown clearly on the photos of the previous ruined party. That's because the true scoundrel is a sentient bouncy castle.
  • Misleading Package Size: Kevin wrapped Gretel's gift to Bailey in a very large box, because their mother wanted to get rid of a few left-over boxes. The gift - a friendship bracelet - is wrapped inside a series of nested boxes, which turn out to be a perfect stalling tactic to keep Bailey and the other party goers away while they find and fight the party vandal.
  • Only in Florida: The highest speed setting for the carousel set up for Baileys party is entitled “Only Legal in Florida.”
  • Pie in the Face: In order to get the bouncy castle, who’s keeping his mouth shut to keep from deflating, to release Hamster and Gretel, Kevin decides to make him laugh by throwing the birthday cake at the clown. Through a series of elaborate slapstick events, Kevin ends up getting hit with the cake instead.
  • Red Herring: Examining photos from a previous destroyed birthday party, Gretel notices a rather angry-looking clown in all of them, making him a prime suspect. Turns out he's innocent: the clown is wearing an angry scowl because angry clowns are an untapped market.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Kevin defeats the bouncy castle, first by pulling the plug so he deflates, then by making him laugh so he finishes deflating. Kevin's attempt to throw the birthday cake at the clown to make the castle laugh ends up leading to an elaborate slapstick sequence, ending with Kevin getting hit instead. As he deflates from laughter, the castle mentions that his one weakness is "elaborate slapstick."
