I Get A Sidekick Out Of You

Lane's Korean family is in town for the wedding. Paris is happy to just be writing articles again. Lane's bachelorette party merges with Zach's bachelor party. Michel bails on Lane's wedding so Lorelai has to invite Christopher because you can't go alone to a Kim wedding as a single woman of a certain age. Colin calls Rory and let's her know that they're airlifting Logan home.

Tropes

  • Ask a Stupid Question...: Rory says the trope name word for word after she asks what happens if they drop the Buddha statue and is told that it breaks.
  • Beta Couple: Beta trio of intergenerational female relatives. Mrs. Kim is about as frightened of her own mother as Emily was of her mother-in-law.
  • Big Eater: Rory is mildly impressed with her father eating four tacos in a row.
  • Bilingual Bonus: The Mrs. Kims speak Korean to each other.
  • Bitter Wedding Speech: Lorelai can't handle eight shots of tequila.
Lorelai: I am so happy that this wonderful 22-year-old girl is married. Getting married is hard. You know who' not getting married? Me!
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Paris's article on tenure. She writes one for and one against and is unable to pick which one to publish.
  • Brick Joke:
    • Lorelai goes on about Richard Gere's penis for a bit. After she lets it go, it gets brought up by Zach.
    • Christopher's discovery of a buffalo coin in his glove compartment. He shows it to Lorelai when he arrives.
  • Captain Obvious: When introducing Chris to Mrs. Kim, Lorelai makes sure to say that he's a man.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Lulu asks for fruit in her drink because she's hungry.
  • Contrived Coincidence:
    • Mrs. Kim happens to get a phone call from her mother immediately before Lorelai shows her the wedding dress she modified, leaving her too shaken to notice how much it has been changed.
    • Lorelai finds it to be this that Rory just happened to visit Jess when Luke and April were there.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Kirk fires all the hot waiters when Lulu looks at them.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Miss Patty sat in church all night holding off five seats because she predicted that with more guests than seats, Lorelai and Sookie would need some help sitting next to their plus-ones.
  • Cultural Rebel:
    • Turns out Mrs. Kim moving to the States and joining the Seventh-day Adventists was her rebelling against her strict mother.
    • Kyon has also become this. Yes, digging Avril counts when your mentor figure can't stand her.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Lane declares that she will have a son in order to end the chain of Kim daughters hiding their lives from their mothers.
    • At the bachelorette party, Kyon reveals that she double-dresses, i.e. wears the clothes she likes under the clothes Mrs. Kim approves of. Come the wedding, it turns out Lane does this with her wedding dress.
  • Funny Background Event: Michel dancing in the background as Lorelai talks on the phone.
  • Fun with Acronyms: Chris makes up his own acronyms to text with Rory.
Rory: (reading aloud) TPTDI. Totaly Psyched To Do It.
  • Hooker with a Heart of Gold: Lorelai jokes that Sookie and Jackson's babysitter has a pimp who sounds like he has a heart of gold.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: Paris writes an opinion piece on tenure defending it, then another one about why it's bad. She can't decide which one she agrees with more.
  • Metaphorgotten: Lorelai explains to Chris that going to a wedding alone as an unmarried woman of a certain age is "apparently Korean for Jenna Jameson". Chris replies that it's lucky for him Luke was out of town, because he's always wanted to meet Jenna Jameson.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Kirk saw a hot bartender put lots of fruit in Lulu's drink, so of course he accuses her of cheating.
  • One-Steve Limit: Subverted. You think a conservative Christian like Mrs. Kim took her husband's last name, but her mother's last name, though presumably not taken from her husband, is also Kim, and according to Korean tradition Lane would have her father's surname, so whether they kept their family names or not, the whole family is named Kim. Subverted because Kim is the most common Korean family name, so it's not completely unlikely that they would coincide.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Mrs. Kim learns that her very strict Buddhist mother is coming to the wedding, and loses all will to criticize.
  • Parental Sexuality Squick:
    • Inverted and exploited. Christopher keeps texting Rory, so Lorelai texts him that his daughter is about to see Richard Gere's penis (in American Gigolo).
    • Lane learns on her wedding day that her mother has only had sex once. She clearly feels she could have lived without this information.
  • Product Placement: Porsche. Sidekick messaging device.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Zach finds he really enjoys the long silk robes worn in the Buddhist marriage ceremony, which Lane refers to as a dress. Gil figures it's handwash only.
  • Rule of Three: Lane's wedding day is in three segments: one part for the grandmother of the bride, one for the mother of the bride, and one for the bride and groom. Three outfits, too.
  • Running Joke: Chris sending Rory proto-tweets.
  • Slut-Shaming: Mrs. Kim doesn't shame as such, but she does mention that her mother will think Lorelai is a tramp or a prostitute if she sees her alone in the clothes she tends to wear. Subverted by Miss Patty, who thinks Lorelai looks great in those outfits.
  • Shout-Out
    • Mrs. Kim tells Lane to read the Bible passages she's underlined.
    • Footloose seems less unlikely when you know Mrs. Kim and her mother.
    • Two of Logan's female friends wants to do an All the President's Men and ask Rory to surprise the boys in Costa Rica with them.
    • Michel doesn't want his reflection to look like Judy Garland, the Mark Herron years.
    • Lorelai refers to Sookie's "dirty" cookies as "Hello, Tommy Lee!"
    • Lane's bachelorette party is supposed to include a viewing of American Gigolo.
    • Kyon rocks out to Avril Lavigne.
    • Kyon feels you can't dance to Joy Division.
    • Lane's bachelorette party tires to see American Gigolo, but miss it.
    • Lorelai and Zach both comment on the aforementioned film showing Richard Gere's penis.
    • Michel bails on Lorelai to see CĂ©line Dion in concert.
    • Lorelai suspects that Mrs. Kim knows Steven Spielberg.
    • Apparently dressing like Lorelai is Korean for Jenna Jameson.
    • Rory wore a Chico and the Man t-shirt to her first day of kindergarten.
    • Blondie's Heart of Glass plays at the wedding reception.
    • Lorelai claims to only delete pictures where she looks like Rhoda.
    • Newly reunited Hep Alien plays a cover of Neil Diamond's I'm A Believer.
    • Drunk Lorelai claims she is sometimes known as Cher.
    • Chris calls Lorelai Calamity Jane.
  • Stag Party: Zach and Lane end up with a joint one.
  • The Talk: Mrs. Kim gives Lane this after her Buddhist wedding, but before her church wedding. She describes it as a terrible thing.
Mrs. Kim: You're going to have to do it with this boy, Lane. You're just going to have to do it.
  • Too Much Information: Lane finds out that she was conceived on her mother's wedding night.
  • Unconventional Wedding Dress: Inverted. Lane wanted a more conventional wedding dress, but did not have the guts to tell Mrs. Kim she didn't want to wear her wedding dress. Lorelai helped out, and through the magic of insanely good timing, Mrs. Kim's mother announces her intent to attend the wedding just in time to distract Mrs. Kim from the fact that the dress looks nothing like it used to.
  • Wanted a Son Instead: Lane invokes this ahead of time, declaring that she wants the line of Kim women hiding their lives from their mothers to end with her.
  • Wedding Episode: This episode is about Zach and Lane's wedding.
