Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: When Chandler tries to pass up going out to dinner with the new couple, Joey says he knows what this is all about: Chandler not liking Kathy. Chandler prefers this to having to explain what his real problem is.
  • The Bro Code: For all of Ross's boasting, Rachel knows that he hasn't gotten anywhere with Amanda. Ross immediately glares at Chandler, who cops to telling secrets so that others will like him.
  • Call-Back: Thinking Chandler simply dislikes Kathy, Joey reminds him of his own effort to put up with Janice.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Chandler finds that the guy Kathy is waiting for is his best friend and roommate.
  • Everyone Can See It: The others explicitly point out to Chandler how obvious his attraction to Kathy is.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Chandler is ashamed of himself for being attracted to his best friend's girlfriend.
  • Flipping the Bird: Ross bangs his fists together as an alternative to this. Monica says he came up with it when they were children and that she considered it pretty pathetic at the time, too. When Rachel ends up using it against him, Ross goes a step further: putting his hands behind his neck and flapping his arms.
  • Getting Sick Deliberately: Phoebe, who has a cold and a hoarse voice, thinks her new singing voice is sexy. When she accidentally gets better, she tries to catch another cold, first from Monica, then from Gunther, so she can get her "sexy phlegm" back.
  • Hand-or-Object Underwear: Joey uses a dartboard to cover himself up when he asks Chandler to turn the TV down.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After another set, Phoebe says she loves how sexy she sounds. She then starts coughing profusely.
  • Infomercial: Chandler and Kathy bond when she points out a "Wonder Broom" infomercial and he reveals he bought one.
  • Ironic Echo: When Monica reveals that Ross is just Amanda's babysitter, Rachel starts laughing mockingly. When Monica points out that Josh is stealing from her, Ross starts laughing right back.
  • Life Isn't Fair: When told at the club to make more of an effort to like Kathy, Chandler's not very subtle about venting his frustration over missing out on a chance with her because Joey saw her first.
  • Mistaken for Romance: Ross thinks Amanda gave him her number because she's interested in him. When he turns up and finds her ready for a date. He doesn't get two words in as he finds out she actually wanted him to babysit her kids while she goes out to meet her 'actual' date.
  • Oh, Crap!: Phoebe when she realizes she's gotten over her cold.
  • Operation: Jealousy: Both Ross and Rachel date other people just to make each other jealous.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Monica over Ross and Rachel continuing to snipe at each other rather than handing her the cough drops she asked for.
  • The Reason You Suck: Monica gives both Ross and Rachel a speech to put them in their place after she's had enough of them bickering. She tells Ross to his face that he isn't dating Amanda, she's using him as a babysitter. While proving that Rachel's new 'boyfriend' is stealing from her.
  • Right Through the Wall: Chandler ends up asking Monica if he can sleep on her couch to get away from hearing Joey and Kathy through the apartment walls.
  • Sexy Shirt Switch: When Chandler finds Kathy in the living room in the middle of the night she's wearing Joey's Rangers jersey.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sick Episode: Phoebe starts the episode with a cold but enjoys the way it makes her voice sounds. She eventually gets better and by then it's passed to Monica.
  • Soup Is Medicine: After Monica gets sick Phoebe brings her soup to make her feel better. Unfortunately Phoebe's strict vegetarianism means there's no chicken in either the soup or the stock "so it's really just noodle water".
  • Sticky Fingers: Rachel's new boyfriend Josh steals her cash and her jacket. When Monica points this out in her speech Rachel counters that at least he bought her a bracelet with the money...except he stole the bracelet from Monica.
