Joey agrees to help Mr. Treeger learn ballroom dancing after almost getting Monica and Rachel evicted. Chandler wants to quit his gym. Phoebe is attracted to one of her massage clients.

- Brick Joke: When Joey lets it out that he and Chandler are keeping the chick and the duck in the building, he covers it up by saying "Chick" and "Duck" are his and Chandler's respective nicknames. Near the end when Treeger meets Chandler while waiting for Joey, he calls him "Duck," to which a confused Chandler calls Treeger "Bunny-Rabbit."
- Compressed Vice: In this episode, we're told that Rachel always cries, when in fact she's never been portrayed as a crybaby before.
- Dancing Is Serious Business: The girls tease Joey about dancing with Treeger—"Gay yet?"—but it becomes clear that Joey genuinely likes it and sincerely respects how difficult it is.
- Distracted by the Sexy:
- Whenever Chandler tried to quit the gym, they bring out Maria (played by Amber Smith), a sexy trainer who distracts him from going through with it. When Ross goes with Chandler to help him quit for good, who should show up to convince him to join but Maria.Ross: Who is Maria?
Chandler: Ah, Maria. You can't say no to her. She's like this Lycra/Spandex covered gym... treat. - Later at the bank, when they were trying to cancel their accounts so the gym could not charge them, the bank officer who is attending them brings out Karen Lambert (played by Hope Allen), the accounts manager, who not only convinces them not to close their respective accounts, but also to open a third joint checking account.
- Whenever Chandler tried to quit the gym, they bring out Maria (played by Amber Smith), a sexy trainer who distracts him from going through with it. When Ross goes with Chandler to help him quit for good, who should show up to convince him to join but Maria.
- "Friends" Rent Control: Mr. Treeger reveals he knows about Monica illegally subletting her grandmother's apartment to abuse rent control.
- Gone Horribly Wrong:
- Ross goes to the gym to help Chandler quit his membership, but instead ends up signing up (and Chandler does not quit).
- Both Ross and Chandler not only do not close their respective bank accounts, but end up opening a third joint checking account. Supposedly, they will use that to pay for their gym memberships.
- I Resemble That Remark!:Joey: The guy made Rachel cry!
Monica: Rachel always cries.
Rachel: [crying] That is not true! - Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Joey goes to confront Treeger for making Rachel cry. However, this causes Treeger to decide he shouldn't look the other way on the fact that Monica is illegally subletting her apartment.
- Plot Hole:
- Instead of Chandler and Ross going to the gym to try cancelling Chandler's membership and having to see Maria, Chandler could have just written to the gym to cancel his membership.
- Instead of them going to the bank to try to close their accounts and having to see Karen Lambert, they could just have told their bank to stop payments to the gym.
- Think Unsexy Thoughts: Phoebe does this to try and distract herself from thinking about how attractive Rick is during his massage. Baseball and sandwiches don't work, she just ends up thinking about Rick doing those things in sexy ways. Eventually she takes Joey's advice and thinks about Chandler. It works so well she loses track of time and lets the appointment go on too long.
