Recap / Dr. Crafty Season 1 Month 6: HalloWinter Special Month

Go To

Airing Range: 12/1/17 - 1/5/18

Returning home from their travels from last month, Crafty and Nurse prepare for a Halloween-themed finale month... In December. To make up for the delay, the duo puts out six episodes for the month, making HalloWinter month the longest so far. Notably, this month introduces a few series mainstays: a certain demonic lawyer and a hilariously incompetent rival for Crafty.

Tropes Applicable to the Month as a whole:

  • Halloween Episode: Crafty wanted to do several Halloween episodes to wrap up the first season. However, due to his Pokémon journey taking longer than expected (and thanks to Hurricane Irma's interference), he ended up having to do these episodes in December. To work around this, he dubs this month the HalloWinter Special.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: This first Season Finale month is distinct in that it has six main show episodes instead of the usual four. Succeeding seasons substitute the two extra main show episodes with the show's spin-off segments.

Main Show E21: "Grease Frightening"

Air Date: 12/1/17

To kick off the month, the duo draws themselves in Halloween costumes of the two protagonists of the movie Grease.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Big Beautiful Woman: Nurse ends the episode with quite a surprise for Crafty: a tight-fitting, Sandy-esque outfit with her hair done into a messy afro. She flirts with Crafty a little, and for once he actually acknowledges and reacts positively to the attempt—with unexpected results.
Crafty: Hey Nurse, want to find out what we're tackling next week?... Nurse?
[A piano cue plays as Nurse arrives in a tight-fitting, revealing leather outfit, topped off with her hair undone into a messy afro and a battery in her left hand.]
Nurse: Hmhm... tell me about it, stud~.
[Seduced, Crafty goes bonkers. He starts blushing and spouts gibberish that culminates in a burst of lightning.]
    Crafty: YAAAAAA-HOO-HOO-HOO-HOOIE!!!
[It seems the episode is over, but the screen suddenly fades back to the lab. Crafty is singed and Nurse is completely taken off-guard.]
Nurse: Oh! Oh. Oh wow. It really was electrifying. Sorry.
[The actual ending lightning flash plays.]
  • Big "NO!": When Crafty realizes that he's missed Halloween by two months, he evokes Darth Vader's infamous "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!"
  • Rage Against the Heavens: Dr. Crafty has it out for Mother Nature, forcing him to delay his Halloween special thanks to Hurricane Irma.
Crafty: Curse you, Mother Nature! I hope you get meteorological menopause!

Main Show E22: "Danse Macabre"

Air Date: 12/8/17

A special piece commissioned by Gomez and Morticia Addams commemorating their relationship is up next. Crafty and Nurse discuss how atypical the Addams family is compared to other sitcom families of their time.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

Main Show E23: "Street Frighters"

Air Date: 12/16/17

Crafty enlists Makai Noble-turned-evil lawyer Jedah Dohma to become internet famous, which he hopes shall take into effect while he and Nurse work on a Darkstalkers-related piece.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Deal with the Devil: Crafty makes a deal with Jedah to trade the souls of his YouTube commenters for more views and Patreon money, but Jedah later voids the contract because the souls he obtained were nothing but internet memes.
  • Take That!: The ending skit sticks it to Capcom for its negligent handling of some of its franchises. An employee visits Morrigan saying that they're finally going to give her what the fans were asking for. Naturally, she thinks it's a brand new Darkstalkers game... but it turns out to be a guest appearance in Super Smash Bros..

Main Show E24: "Hocus Mansion"

Air Date: 12/22/17

The duo set about summoning the Sanderson Sisters to pair with Disney's Haunted Mansion residents. Both Nurse and Crafty have quite a few close calls dealing with the witches.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • The Cameo: Kid Sideburns (whom Crafty previously drew title cards for) voices all three of the Hitchhiking Ghosts.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Crafty and Nurse find the Black Flame Candle in Disney's Haunted Mansion, with Crafty hoping to summon the Sanderson Sisters so they can guest-star on the show. When Crafty tries lighting the candle, nothing happens. He reads an instruction manual for the summoning process and learns that a virgin must do what he tried. The candle failing to respond to him implies that he might have had a relationship in the past, which gets elaborated upon as the show progresses.
    • Doug Jones comes up in the conversation about Hocus Pocus, and Crafty cites one of his most prominent roles in Shape of Water. This provokes a flashback to Crafty's youth, where he wakes up on a beach with a mysterious creature with many eyes staring down at him. She's presumably the same person from Nurse's vision during "I Ain't Afraid of No Ghost Type," and she seems rather delighted to see Crafty. Before the flashback ends, the creature is started by something and suddenly retreats, to which Crafty calls out to her and asks for her name, and implying yet more about this mysterious figure from Crafty's past.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Mere seconds after getting resurrected, the Sanderson Sisters hungrily surround Nurse Worse with the intent to eat her. Mary, impressed by Nurse's largeness, claims Nurse will keep them fed for centuries and Sarah gleefully calls Nurse "Plump and juicy!". Winifred even jokes that Mary and Sarah not "play with their food".
  • Rule of Three: The three Sanderson sisters are paired up with the Hitchhiking Ghost trio of the Haunted Mansion, with each pairing receiving a piece showcasing their relationship.
  • Wham Episode: There's a flashback sequence showing a younger Crafty being saved from drowning by a mysterious sea woman. The flashback is the first of its kind on the show, being drawn in a different style and played completely seriously. It serves as yet another hint to a larger narrative behind Dr. Crafty.

Main Show E25: "Too Ghoul for School"

Air Date: 12/29/17

After accidentally visiting the wrong school of monster girls, Crafty and Nurse commemorate one of their favorite shows: Scooby-Doo. They also receive an uninvited guest who claims to be Crafty's greatest foe.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Establishing Character Moment: The goofy-looking, inept Disgustilda makes her debut in this episode, complete with a bumbling Leitmotif and a Missing Steps Plan for taking over the world. She claims to be Crafty's nemesis and demands to be taken seriously, but Goozie chases her out without much effort.
  • No Fourth Wall: Crafty acknowledges the show's lack of the fourth wall in the beginning:
Crafty: Hey, do you feel that breeze? Must be a draft coming from our non-existent fourth wall.
  • invoked The Scrappy: While discussing Scooby-Doo, Crafty can't bring himself to address Scrappy-Doo by name, his distaste for him matching the fandom's general consensus. Thus, Crafty simply refers to him as He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named.
  • Take That!: Crafty and Nurse look down upon Monster High, which they call out for its cheap Flash animation and its monotonous character design. Their disdain is shared with Ms. Grimwood's Academy, who hires Harvey Birdman to successfully sue the Monster High students and get them thrown in jail.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: The girls of Monster High are all fans of Crafty and his show, mobbing him like fangirls. He takes one look at them and runs, and later, with Ms. Grimwood's help, he gets them arrested.

Main Show E26: "The Gift that Keeps on Grieving"

Air Date: 1/5/18

This episode ends the HalloWinter special with a Nightmare Before Christmas piece. However, before the show begins, Nurse discovers Crafty singing about… something big. It's something that could mean greater things for the show.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Foreshadowing: The hints of a larger narrative in prior episodes culminate here with Crafty's loving parody of "Jack's Lament." His rendition is attributed to his concerns for his show and what he has in store for it... However, he extends his worries to a deep personal issue that's been on his mind: an ex-girlfriend who left his life years ago and how he was affected by her disappearance.
  • Wham Episode: The hints of a larger narrative dropped by previous episodes finally culminate in Crafty's rendition of "Jack's Lament". While it contains some humor in the form of Self-Deprecation, it explicitly acknowledges the mysterious woman depicted throughout Crafty's flashbacks and his thoughts on her.
