Recap / Dr. Crafty Season 1 Month 5: Pokémon Month

Go To

Airing Range: 10/19/17 - 11/9/17

Nurse and Crafty are drawing Pokemon Gijinkas this month. In search of inspiration, they decide to venture outside of the castle and into the Pokemon world. Each episode, whichever Pokemon catches their attention first will be the one they draw. They discuss their opinions on the Pokemon designs and the ideas behind them, with help from a different special guest each time.

Tropes Applicable to the Month as a whole:

  • Lemony Narrator: In a loving Shout-Out to the Pokémon anime, a narrator introduces each episode of this month. He grows increasingly distasteful towards the show until he's shot and replaced.

Main Show E17: "Flying-Type is the Word"

Air Date: 10/19/2017

Crafty isn't taking his first steps into the Pokemon world too well, especially when a Decidueye—the subject of this episode—tries to maul him. The special guest for this episode is Kitsunehawk.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Rage Against the Author: Kitsunehawk grows fed up when the video's editor keeps bringing up the wrong images during his dialog.

Main Show E18: "Feelin' Thot Thot Thot"

Air Date: 10/26/17

Nurse and Crafty venture into a volcano to find a Salazzle… no matter how long it takes to obtain one. The special guest for this episode is Trickywi.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Foreshadowing: During the opening skit, Crafty's attempts to catch a Salazzle are interrupted by SpongeBob SquarePants time cards, each read by the French Narrator. The show reuses the gag in which Frenchy grows bored and quits, forcing the producers to hire a replacement. The Pokémon Narrator also gets replaced under similar (but more violent) circumstances at the start of "You're as cold as Ice-type."
  • HA HA HA—No: Nurse Worse's reaction after Crafty suggests a burlesque show is a hearty laugh and a cold declination.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Trickywi is represented by a Sylveon wearing a purple hood.
  • Overly Long Gag: Due to how uncommon Salazzle are, Crafty spends a good chunk of his time searching for one in the same patch of grass. He tosses millions of pokeballs at the grass to drive the creature out, with each attempt speeding up after each SpongeBob SquarePants time card. The SB French Narrator even shows up to narrate the scene, and he quickly grows bored and leaves.

Main Show E19: "I ain't Afraid of No Ghost-Type"

Air Date: 11/2/17

The next stop is a dark cave, though by this point, the main duo is starting to have second thoughts about the whole thing when they stumble across a Mismagius… especially when it seems to trigger something in Crafty's memories. The special guest for this episode is Alex Rochon.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Bat Scare: Feeling that his guest has overstayed his welcome, Crafty chases Alex out of the episode by summoning a horde of Zubats. Alex seems more annoyed by the situation than anything.
Crafty: Well, Mr. Rochon, it's been lovely having you chat with us! But um... could you... do me one small favor?
    Alex: ... What's that?
Crafty: Could you... perhaps take... like, two, maybe three steps to your left?
    Alex: Okay, like this?
[After Alex obliges, he triggers a wild Pokémon encounter, and he gets shoved off-screen by a swarm of Zubat.]
Alex: AHH!! THERE ARE SO MANY ZUBATS! WHY ARE THERE SO MANY?! I'LL GET YOU, DOCTOR CRAFTYYYYY!!!!
    Crafty: HeheheheheHAHAHAHAHAHA!
  • Foreshadowing: When Mismagius gives Nurse and Crafty a vision, Nurse witnesses a silhouette of Crafty beside a similarly silhouetted, mysterious woman. Aside from leaving her rattled, Nurse has no idea what to make of it. The scene is the first of many hints to come that there's an overarching narrative bubbling under Dr. Crafty's surface.
  • Mind Screw: The wild Mismagius uses its bizarre magic to put Crafty and Nurse through the wringer throughout the episode, flipping the video screen (which sends both Crafty and Nurse falling down) and trapping them in some nightmares. The first nightmare is shown from Nurse's perspective, in which she sees Crafty standing beside a mysterious, ominous woman. The second sees both hosts getting assaulted by visions of Mr. Blobby.

Main Show E20: "You're as cold as Ice-type"

Air Date: 11/9/17

The final destination for this trip is a snowy mountain. After getting caught up in a snowstorm, Crafty discovers the basis of his last Gijinka: Alolan Ninetales. The last special guest is Steven Kelly.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Big Beautiful Woman:
    • Nurse acknowledges her weight for the first time on the show. Appropriate to the monthly theme, she remarks that she has the Thick Fat ability—thanks to her weight, she is resistant to the cold.
    • The Gijinka Alolan Ninetales is also quite a large woman, but she's no less stunning for it.
  • Non Sequitur, *Thud*: As Nurse discusses how thick Alolan Ninetales' hair is, Crafty gets assaulted by Thicc memes. Just before he's knocked out cold, Crafty reveals this:
Crafty: My favorite color is... bacon!
    • Later on, he has similar revelation:
Crafty: They're trying to take my tortillas!
  • Rule of Three: Crafty gets attacked by three different "Thicc" meme images while on the topic of Nurse or the Gijinka Ninetails.
  • Who Writes This Crap?!: The Pokémon narrator finally reaches his limit due to narrating over the same basic premise three times now. He loudly loses his temper, and in response, security guards storm his recording booth and violently subdue him. The forcibly retired narrator is quickly replaced by another one for the introductory skit, but the original narrator returns to finish off the month. He's alive, but he's recovering from his wounds and developing quite a morphine addiction.
