Even in a cruel place like Night City, friendship and family exist somewhere beneath all the grime, gore, and cybernetics.
David interrupts Maine and Dorio having an intimate moment at Afterlife, bored and also eager to continue his Edgerunner training. As much to get rid of him as anything, Maine proceeds to order the rest of the crew to run David ragged.

As a new recruit, David receives training and instruction from the other gang members, including running errands for Pilar and his sister Rebecca, learning how to drive from Maine, and jogging at night with Lucy. He also participates in several jobs with the crew, such as taking out a gang of Scavengers, rescuing Rebecca from Maelstrom, and helping Lucy with her picksocketing heists.

He learns that Lucy is a talented netrunner, but not much else about her past. David confides with Maine that he does have feelings for Lucy, but he's certain that she doesn't feel the same and has trouble figuring out whether he should trust her. Maine surprises David by encouraging him to pursue her.

Eventually, David begins to feel at home with the gang. However, on the way home from a bar, Pilar begins harassing a heavily modified man peeing on the street. The man is revealed to have cyberpsychosis and he suddenly kills Pilar with a concealed gun. This drives Rebecca into a furious rage and leaves David stunned when the man tries to kill him with a concealed cannon. When Lucy is targeted by the cyberpsycho, David uses his Sandevistan to distract the cyberpsycho, and kills him before he can attack Lucy again.

David takes Lucy home while the gang stays behind to take care of the mess, where Lucy reveals her dream to go to the Moon is genuine. David promises to Lucy that he will take her to the Moon and they kiss.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Anyone Can Die: The team suffers its first casualty, highlighting how short and violent Edgerunner lives can be.
  • A-Team Firing: Rebecca, who's so blind with rage over Pilar's death that none of her shots hit the cyberpsycho.
  • Atomic F-Bomb: Courtesy of Rebecca after a cyberpsycho zeroes Pilar.
    Rebecca: COCKSUCKER!!!!!
  • The Big Damn Kiss: After Lucy's First Kiss, she asks David to promise her that she wouldn't die on her. They soon share a passionate kiss, with the camera showing a rocket blasting off in the background and them transporting themselves to the moon as Dawid PodsiadÅ‚o's "Little Stranger" plays during this scene.
  • Blinded by Rage: Rebecca becomes this, big time when Pilar gets killed, enough so when Maine couldn't restrain Rebecca, Kiwi is forced to tranquilize her with electric shocks to prevent her from getting killed by the cyberpsycho.
Maine: CRAZY LITTLE SHIT! You're flatline if you don't learn to subtle!
  • Boom, Headshot!: How Pilar meets his demise, shot from the jaw up.
    • David returns the favor to the cyberpsycho. It's not enough to put him down and he almost shoots David before Maine punches his head off. Then Rebecca blasts the head apart and shoots the rest of Pilar's head off.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Pilar is killed in large part because he harassed a cyberpsycho peeing in an abandoned industrial area.
  • The Cameo: Claire Russell and Rogue Amendiares make cameo appearances in the scene where Maine's crew is in Afterlife.
  • Character Death: Pilar is killed in an unexpected and senseless fashion, preventing other Edgerunners from remembering him well.
  • Comically Small Bribe: Inverted. Rebecca gives David 500 eddies as a tip for delivering a package.
  • Fanservice:
    • A male example of David is shown in a shower scene doing calisthenics.
    • Lucy is shown naked inside a VR bath.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: It's easy to miss amidst the chaos, but throughout the entire fight with the cyberpsycho, his chromed-up nads are on full display.
  • Good-Times Montage: In addition to training, David eventually wins the group's respect and they start having fun times like helping Rebecca get into Afterlife as well as visiting Lizzie's Bar with Pilar.
  • I Have Your Wife: Maelstrom attempts to pull this on the crew with Rebecca but David just kidnaps her back with his Sandevistan.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: As Pilar is harrassing the cyberpsycho, he notices that the man has cybernetic genitals, and says "Gives new meaning to the phrase, "hard as iron—"", but gets shot in the head before he could finish his sentence.
  • Mistaken Age: Rebecca isn't allowed into the Afterlife because, well, she looks like a kid. Then she throws a fit while the others walk inside.
  • Not Quite Dead: The cyberpsycho is shot in the head by David but it takes decapitation by Maine, followed by Rebecca shooting the severed head to kill him off for real.
  • Official Kiss: David and Lucy do this after David promises to take Lucy to the moon. This moment cements their status to an Official Couple for the remainder of the series.
  • Once More, with Clarity: We only see cryptic shots of what happened before the opening credits. Midway through, we see what led to that.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: A short one from Rebecca, who is furious she's not the one to kill the cyberpsycho.
  • A Real Man Is a Killer: Lucy notes that the cyberpsycho is David's first kill and is impressed. Though David actually wasn't the one who finished him off.
  • Relationship Upgrade: With a little encouragement from Maine, David gets his relationship with Lucy upgraded to Official Couple status with his promise to take Lucy to the moon. Moreover, the time between this episode and the next, Lucy takes David's virginity, meaning they also have a sexual upgrade on top of the emotional one.
  • The Reveal: Rebecca and Pilar are actually brother and sister as well as living together.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Rebecca immediately goes nuts after the murder of her brother and is furious that she's not the one who kills the cyberpsycho.
  • Shout-Out: Among the gang of Maelstrom gangoons that kidnap Rebecca and get sliced up by Lucy there is a woman with three boobs.
  • Spiteful Spit: Once Rebecca is done venting her anger by shooting her brother's killer apart, she spits a piece of gum on the remains.
  • These Hands Have Killed: David briefly is shocked that he killed the cyberpsycho (or so he thinks).
  • Training Montage: David starts learning the basics of criminal activity like driving, gunplay, and improving his meat body.
  • True Companions: David is less interested in the Eddies and more spending time with the crew because he has no one else in his life. The crew gradually warms up to David despite his greenness.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Pilar dies unexpectedly and violently after only a couple of episodes.

Rebecca

When David goes to Rebecca's apartment to deliver Pilar a cybernetic arm, he gets a full face of Rebecca's gun, along with the sight of her wearing nothing but a black bra and panties, along with her tattoos. All he gets for it is Pilar flipping him off...and Rebecca paying him the money. Upon seeing how happy he is with the payment, Rebecca calls David adorable and tries to flirt with him, showing she has a softer side underneath her violent, swear-happy demeanor.
