Recap / Cold Case S 5 E 2 That Woman

Go To

Directed by Roxann Dawson

Written by Liz W Garcia

The team reopens the 1998 murder of high school student Carrie Swett after a piece of her clothing is found in an abandoned van. They discover Carrie got in over her head when she joined her high school's Christian chastity club in an effort to better her promiscuous image.

Related tropes:

  • Accomplice by Inaction: The one Hearts Wait Club member, Manny Kim, did not strike Carrie like the others did, but he is still guilty of the crime due to his presence at the murder and subsequent years of silence.
  • Alliterative Name: Sheila Swett.
  • Ambiguously Gay: May overlap with Ambiguously Bi. It’s revealed that True Hearts member Phil was having sexual thoughts about men, but in the present day he claims he has a wife and two children.
  • Armored Closet Gay: Phil takes this to the extreme. He was so desperate not to have his true sexuality discovered, even by himself, that he was willing to murder someone to keep it under wraps.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Tina is Hiding Behind Religion to cover her own sinful actions, like having an intimate relationship with her chastity club supervisor and then murdering the girl who found out in order to keep her secret safe. She also manipulated and forced the other club members to go along with her to do her dirty work so she wouldn’t get caught.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Carrie (blonde), Laurie (brunette), and Tina (redhead).
  • Call-Back: Scotty's handling of the case in "Offender" is brought up as evidence for why an investigation is needed into his conduct.
  • Disappeared Dad: Carrie is raised by her single mother since her father left for Ohio.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: The supervisor might be a perverted creep taking advantage of an underage girl, but he's still genuinely horrified when this indirectly causes Carrie's death.
  • Everybody Did It: It turns out that every student member of the Hearts Wait Club is guilty in Carrie's murder case, either by striking her or, in Manny's case (as mentioned above), being an accomplice by inaction.
  • Freudian Excuse: Tina mentions her father was seduced by a younger woman.
  • Guilt-Ridden Accomplice: Laurie feels the most guilty over her forced involvement in Carrie's murder. Even as she confesses and has her mugshot taken in the ending, she is shown to be intensely crying. Manny also shows hints of remorse, and eventually Phil, too, once he's forced to realize he helped kill an innocent girl who did nothing wrong.
  • Hiding Behind Religion: Hoo boy, are they ever! In spite of their "illustrious" Hearts Wait Club, all of the students (save for Carrie) are hypocrites engaging in "sinful" activities such as premarital sex and having homoerotic thoughts. Even worse, the staff supervisor and youth pastor engaged in a mutual relationship with his underage student.
  • Hypocrite: Tina said it was wrong to have sexual thoughts about her older supervisor while she was still underage, but she somehow thought it was acceptable to have him jerk off to her describing said sexual dreams she had. Don’t ask how that made sense.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Tina Quinn, the leader of the club, was so steadfast of the beliefs of the club that she remained a virgin into the present day, which led to her husband, a soldier that she told everyone was away fighting in the war, divorcing her. Also, see Hypocrite above.
  • Irony: When Detective Vera asks Jerry if the school slut Carrie “liked it rough”, he reveals that he found her to be “pretty boring”.
  • Jerk Jock: Jerry Wood, the baseball captain who convinced Carrie to lose her virginity to him, then humiliated her in front of the school.
  • Lack of Empathy:
    • Being the mastermind of the whole thing, Tina is shown to be the least remorseful over Carrie's murder. She is also visibly upset when Phil, Manny, and Laurie begin confessing to take her down. When their mugshots are taken, Tina even glares at the camera.
    • Phil has lived his life with no remorse over killing Carrie until the detectives confront him. It is then he starts to realize that Tina used him to kill an innocent girl.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • The supervisor is deeply ashamed of the fact that his seducing Tina made her issues worse.
    • Laurie is the most remorseful and guilty; she never wanted to exactly kill Carrie but was forced to go along with it by Tina. Phil and Manny also show signs of guilt by the end, as they now both know the only one who corrupted them was Tina.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Sheila outlives Carrie.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Carrie frequently wears pink clothes, and her mother even celebrates her birthday in the end with a pink frosted cake.
  • Pregnancy Scare: Manny and Laurie, a young couple from the True Hearts Club, have one. When Carrie discovers that Laurie could be pregnant, Manny threatens her life.
  • Quirky Curls: Carrie has a full head of blonde curls.
  • She Knows Too Much: The motive behind Carrie’s murder.
  • Shout-Out: The title of the episode comes from President Clinton's denial during the Monica Lewinsky scandal, "I did not have sexual relations with that woman." A clip of him saying this is even seen during the episode with the 1998 cops watching it on TV.
  • Slut-Shaming: Carrie goes through this in all its entirety.
  • The Unishment: Back in 1998, the sex ed teacher sends Jerry out of the classroom as punishment for mocking Carrie, but the school bell rings to announce the end of class right after she orders him to leave, negating any effects the punishment could have.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom:
    • Jerry's cruel prank on Carrie is what spurred her to join the chastity club.
    • Tina was already troubled, and her supervisor seduced her knowing this. This set off a chain of events that led to Carrie's death.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: A sweet variation where the recipient is the one giving this to themselves. All the Hearts Wait members wrote a secret note to put in a jar. Carrie, despite being treated horribly, writes this in her note:
Carrie: I think that God loves me for who I am.
  • Youthful Freckles: Laurie in 1998 has these.
