Recap / Bob's Burgers S8E11 "Sleeping With The Frenemy"

Go To

To earn a Thundergirl badge, Tina volunteers to let Tammy crash with them when she misses a cruise ship. As Tammy drives everyone insane, Gene and Bob deal with a baby tooth situation.

Troping with the Frenemy:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Tammy seems to understand for a moment that she needs to be more considerate and compassionate... and then tells the Belchers they all need to work on that. It's amazing they didn't kick her out right then and there.
  • Birds of a Feather: The reason Tina falls for Brett while she's Playing Cyrano.
  • Brick Joke: A seagull takes Gene's last baby tooth. At the end of the episode, Brett and Tina witness the seagull barf it out.
  • British Teeth: Referenced when Dr. Yap shows Gene his collection of pulled rotten teeth and Gene quips "What did you do with the rest of Michael Caine, You Monster!?"
  • Call-Back: "Sit Me Baby One More Time" mentioned Linda's obsession with Gene's baby teeth, having a container of them in her purse. Here, it's a major part of the B-plot.
  • Companion Cube: Linda is creepily attached to Gene's baby teeth. She apparently talks to them.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: "Alcohol does not solve problems, Miss Missy. Just makes 'em go away."
  • Dumb Blonde: Tammy doesn't even know what a brain is called, instead referring to it as the "gunk behind the face".
  • Epic Fail: Tammy is so spoiled and so sheltered she can't even comprehend Teddy asking her to pass her a bottle of ketchup. Which was right next to her hand.
  • Failure Montage: Tina's attempts to get a badge is met with a montage of failures. First, she plants a flower in the middle of a soccer field during a game. Second, she tries picking up trash at the beach until she accidentally punctures the bag and a receeding tide pulls all the trash into the ocean. Finally, she tries to help Edith cross the street, only for Edith to shout she wasn't crossing the street and yells for the police.
  • Gilligan Cut: Bob says he isn't going to fix Tammy's hair, and he does exactly that in the next cut while Tammy complains.
  • Global Ignorance: Jocelyn says she'll go for spring break to a place where you can stand in four states at once, those states being California, Hawaii, Canada, and Chicago.
  • Graceful Loser: Tammy winds up encouraging Brett and Tina to get together after the Cyrano charade has fallen apart. She goes as far as to volunteer to cover Tina's shift even though she hates working in the restaurant.
  • Helping Granny Cross the Street: One of the things Tina tries to earn her badge. Unfortunately, the granny happens to be Edith Cranwinkle, who isn't going down that street.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: Louise often mocks her family's cooking. When Tammy does the same, Louise casually threatens murder.
  • Implied Death Threat: When Tammy snubs the Belchers' food and insists on ordering in, she asks if their neighborhood is even safe enough to be delivered to. Louise tells her that it's very safe, "except for that huge unsolved murder that's gonna happen."
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Tammy bullies Tina for not getting to go on vacation. Guess who misses her cruise ship?
  • Loose Tooth Episode: The subplot sees Gene about to lose his last baby tooth, which Linda is eager to get because she's been collecting them. When it finally comes out, however, it falls on the beach and gets taken by a seagull, forcing Bob and Gene to scramble for a replacement before Linda finds out.
  • Metaphorically True: Tammy wasn't lying when she told Brett that her parents left her with the Belchers and that they put her to work, but, without the context, she makes it seem like she's being forced into it, with him even accusing Tina of treating her like a slave.
  • Missed the Bus: Tammy left the cruise ship to buy lip gloss and it leaves port before she returns. Since her father isn't willing to go ashore on a helicopter due to his airsickness, Tammy is forced to stay at the Belchers' apartment until they return from the trip.
  • Parental Favoritism: Note that Linda doesn't seem to have a collection of Tina or Louise's baby teeth, just Gene's.
  • Parental Neglect: Tammy's father refuses to go retrieve his daughter because he gets airsick and the only way back to shore is by medevac, instead choosing to enjoy the luxuries of the cruise over Tammy's well-beingnote . He doesn't even consider asking his wife (who is also on the cruise) to pick up their daughter insteadnote . Contrast this to the Belcher parents, who would brave the skies in a heartbeat if their kids were in the same situation.
  • Pet the Dog: Tammy covering Tina's shift so she can go on a date with Brett might be the nicest thing she's ever done.
  • Playing Cyrano: Tina tells Tammy what to say to Brett through her phone earbuds, and pretty much handles the texting in its entirety. As in the original Cyrano de Bergerac, Tina ends up falling in love.
Linda: This whole thing, it's a Cyrano de Bergerac!
    Louise: Cyra-yes de Burger-ac!
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: Tammy, who is spoiled by her wealthy parents, has trouble grasping such simple tasks as using a sponge or even passing Teddy a ketchup bottle. She also has genuine trouble saying the word "work".
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Linda would always collect Gene's loose baby tooth, but when Gene's last baby tooth falls out and is eaten by a seagull, Bob and Gene work together to get a replacement tooth. They go to Dr. Yap to buy an adult rotten tooth and have Teddy grind and paint the tooth to look small and white. But when Gene puts the new tooth in his mouth and pretends to lose it in front of Linda, he accidentally swallows it. To add insult to injury, Linda reveals she already lost some his baby teeth anyway during the times she took them out and played with them.
Bob: Oh, my God, we spent so much time on this.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Skewed Priorities: Tammy valued getting her brand of lip gloss over the cruise ship, or even telling her parents what she planned to do.
  • Springtime for Hitler: Louise went along with the Playing Cyrano plan under the belief that Tammy would completely fail to win over Brett. The plan winds up going perfectly.
Louise: (after Tammy and Brett start to make out) I thought this was gonna go disastrously wrong, not disgustingly right.
  • Survival Mantra: After Tammy starts driving the Belchers crazy, Tina has to repeatedly mutter "badge" under her breath to remind herself why she's letting Tammy stay with her.
  • Taking Advantage of Generosity: The Belchers (albeit extremely, extremely reluctantly) allow Tammy to stay with them, and she proceeds to be an utterly demanding spoiled brat incapable of recognizing how unreasonable she is. Tammy uses up all their hot water, forces Bob to fix her hair, and then steals Tina's bed while suggesting she can just sleep on the floor.
  • Tempting Fate: As the cruise ship sails off, Tina remarks that at least she won't have to hear Tammy's obnoxious voice for a week. Cue Tammy running up next to the Belchers.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Played with, in that the Belchers and Tammy herself are not happy with Tammy being stuck at their house. The problem is she has nowhere else to go until her parents get back from their cruise and they refuse to leave early. Tammy manages to piss off the entire family due to her inconsiderate lack of boundaries and demands.
  • Tooth Fairy: Briefly mentioned when Linda reveals she started collecting Gene's baby teeth because Gene was scared of the tooth fairy. To maintain some semblance of the tooth fairy tradition, she traded the teeth for kisses instead of money (which Louise calls a rip-off).
  • Ungrateful Bitch: Tammy is extremely rude and demanding towards the Belchers (complaining about food, demanding Bob dry her hair then complaining when he does it, taking Tina's bed and farting in her room) until the very end of the episode when she volunteers to cover Tina's shift so she and Brett can go for a walk on the beach and talk things out. Granted, the Belchers aren't happy to let her in their home, but the fact remains they didn't have to do so in the first place. And sure enough, they eventually get sick of it and force her to earn her stay by making her work in the restaurant.
