Recap / Bob's Burgers S4E4 "My Big Fat Greek Bob"

Go To

Bob fills in as a fraternity cook as a favor for one of his friends, and his quick bonding with them angers a loitering alum: Dr. Yap. Meanwhile, Linda gets involved in selling "ladies' goods" with Gretchen, which turns out to be vibrators.

My Big Fat Greek Tropes:

  • Ambiguously Bi: Dr. Yap takes a moment to admire Bob's body.
  • Big "NO!": Tina yells one when Bob decides to switch dentists after Dr. Yap tries to pull off his prank.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Bob stops Yap's prank from getting the Betas in trouble, and when Yap goes through with the prank he gets banned for life from the campus, but Bob also gets banned in the process. Fortunately, he and the Betas remain on good terms since they're overjoyed and grateful Bob got Yap out of their lives.
  • Blatant Lies: When he interrupts the dinner to warn the Betas about Yap's deception, Bob claims to be the honoree's brother.
  • Bluffing the Authorities: When Bob is helping the Betas prank the Alphas, just before they're about to leave in the car, a campus police cop shows up. Bob gives an excuse that he's a professor teaching a class on "creative driving", which the campus cop completely buys.
  • Brick Joke: Gene is convinced to attend college after hearing one of the Betas decide to go pee out of a window. At the end of the episode, during Gretchen's "Lady Goods" party, he decides not to wait for college.
Gene: My sisters are my brothers! I'm gonna go pee out a window!
  • Children Are Innocent: When it turns out that the "Lady Goods" are vibrators, Louise and Gene have no idea what they are. Tina seems to have some understanding of what they are, but Linda kicks her out of the "Lady Goods" party along with her younger siblings since they're all underage.
Louise: Ha ho! I don't know what that thing is, but the look on Mom's face is hilarious! I'll buy it!
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Bob interrupts the dinner to warn the Betas of Yap's deceit, Gene has no idea of what he's doing and just assumes he's trying to be funny, telling him to leave the jokes to the dean.
  • Continuity Nod: Bob is cooking for the Betas during this episode because his friend Pepe, whose restaurant went out of business in "Moody Foodie" and found a job as the Betas' fraternity cook since then, asked him to fill in for a week.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: One of the party guests at the first sales pitch questions if it's appropriate to have the Belcher kids around, much to Linda's confusion. A few seconds later, Gretchen pulls out a vibrator, prompting Linda to immediately send the kids to their rooms since they're underage.
  • Foreshadowing: The Alpha who appears during the multiple pranks looks confused at the Betas rather than angry or upset, indicating they might not be involved with the pranks.
  • Good All Along: It turns out the Alphas have never pranked the Betas, and are actually genuinely upstanding people.
  • Go to Your Room!: A non-misbehaving example. Linda, having no idea what the "Lady Goods" are, initially lets her kids join the party she agreed to host at the apartment for Gretchen. The second Linda find out that the products are vibrators, she immediately sends the kids to their rooms because she knows it's not appropriate to sell sex toys in front of kids.
  • Harmful to Minors: One of the party guests warns Linda that she might not want to have the kids around when Gretchen starts her sales pitch. Linda doesn't catch the hint until Gretchen pulls out a vibrator in plain sight.
  • I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine: The dean is played by Jonathan Katz, who costarred with H. Jon Benjamin on Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist.
  • Initiation Ceremony: The Betas have one... hugging.
  • Manchild: Yap apparently graduated years ago, and still mooches off the current students of his old fraternity. It took him getting banned for life from the campus to make him stop.
  • Misplaced Retribution: The Betas eventually learn that the Alphas have nothing to do with the prank war, and they've been setting off pranks on the Alphas for no reason.
  • Mrs. Robinson: One of the older women at Gretchen's sales pitch tries to seduce Hefty Jeff, who is a twenty-something college student. Jeff seems more confused than anything, though his frat brothers encourage him to go through with it.
  • Multitasked Conversation: In order to stop the Betas from going through with the prank, Bob interrupts the ceremony and gives a speech to the audience while telling the Betas the truth about Dr. Yap framing the Alphas for his pranks.
  • Never My Fault: Dr. Yap laments how easily Bob got along with the Betas, ignoring that the reason he doesn't get along with the Betas is because he's completely nuts.
  • Nice Guy: Pretty much all the Beta members are swell guys (pranking aside). They haze with hugs, and immediately hit it off with Bob.
Hefty Jeff: Some good huggers in this group.
    • The Alphas as well turn out to be pretty nice guys who do a lot of charity work.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Linda's reaction when she finds out that the "Lady Goods" are vibrators at the same time Gretchen starts her sales pitch... with her underage kids in the same room.
    • Pud is the one who realizes the true meaning of Bob's Multitasked Conversation, and he reacts accordingly.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: The oddly nicknamed Betas Turd and Pud.
  • Persona Non Grata: Dr. Yap and Bob are banned from the college campus at the end of the episode.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The episode title is a reference to My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
  • The Reveal:
    • The Alphas have never pranked the Betas, and are actually Good All Along. All those years it was Dr. Yap in a pathetic attempt to make the Betas appreciate him more by leading them in retaliation against their so-called "enemies".
    • Dr. Yap stole Beta the stuffed iguana because he was mad the other Betas would rather hang out with Bob than him, and the locked "Room of Secrets" was where he hid him.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: Yap asks if it's insane to collect six months' worth of dental patients' spit. Bob quickly answers that it absolutely is.
  • Snap Back: Despite being completely shaved bald for the rest of this episode, Yap's hair grows back in full by the next episode (though it could just be a wig).
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Louise tries to open the "Room of Secrets" Skeleton Key Card style... and it fails because modern doors are created to No-Sell to this kind of lockpicking.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: The Betas loathe whenever Dr. Yap, AKA "Slowhand", visits. They're all happy when Bob manages to get him banned from campus as they can now focus more on their studies.
