Recap / Bob's Burgers S3E15 "O.T.: The Outside Toilet"

Go To

After failing a class project, Gene stumbles into the woods and finds a talking toilet. However, he's soon pursued by someone looking for it. Meanwhile, Bob finds a new confidence in a suit that he's borrowing from Mort.

O.T.: The Outside Tropes:

  • Abusive Parent: A mother tells Bob her son is an idiot within earshot of him.
  • Accidental Misnaming: Teddy genuinely thinks Bob's name is Bob Burger.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Bob chuckles a little when Teddy reveals he thinks Bob's surname is "Burger".
  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Bob and Linda get so plastered that they actually forget to order dinner at the restaurant.
  • Big "NO!": Gene lets out two - once when he falls on the road with the toilet and thinks Max Flush arrived in a car to steal it, and again at the coffee restaurant when the toilet's battery dies.
  • Blatant Lies: Gene claims he can save his second flour baby as it "bleeds out" in his arms.
  • Blunt "No": The kids are making the toilet say ridiculous things, but draws the line at Tina's second request.
    Louise: Say "pupu platter."
    Toilet: Pupu platter.
    Louise: Say "nuclear wiener."
    Toilet: Nuclear wiener.
    Gene: Say "hypothalamus."
    Toilet: Hypothalamus.
Tina Say "I love you, Tina."
    Toilet: I love you, Tina.
Tina Say "I love you, Tina, I'm not a toilet, I'm a boy."
    Toilet: No.
    Tina: [disappointed] Oh...
  • Brick Joke: When Max Flush introduces himself to the Belchers, Teddy tells him that Bob's name is Bob Burgers. At the end of the episode, when Bob's suit is taken by an officer whose father owned the suit, Louise tells him that Bob's name is Bob Burgers.
  • The Cameo: Colleen Caviello passes by outside Beville's at the start of Bob & Linda's date night.
  • Chick Magnet: While dressed in Mort's suit, Bob gets hit on by quite a few people.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Linda is less than pleased to see Bob getting hit on by three young women.
  • Companion Cube: What were you expecting from an episode about a boy bonding with a toilet?
  • Decoy Getaway: The kids distract Max Flush by having Ollie Pesto dress as Gene to serve as a decoy, tricking him into taking the ferry to King's Head Island and buying them time to get the toilet to a place where they can recharge it.
  • Egg Sitting: Gene's class gets assigned sacks of flour to care for. Gene doesn't do too well, to put it lightly, to the point that Frond fails him within a minute.
  • Epic Fail:
    • Gene didn't even have his flour sack baby for a full minute before he dropped it. He then proceeded to drop the replacement, and he tripped and destroyed the one he stole.
    • Bob contesting his parking ticket would have been this because of his shoddy defense... but then the judge notices his suit and immediately drops all charges.
  • Eye Am Watching You: Max does the gesture to Gene, who thinks it means he wants to switch eyeballs with him.
  • Fancy Toilet Awe: This episode focuses on the saga of a fancy Japanese-style talking toilet that Gene discovers in the woods as well as the great lengths he takes to have it avoid being stolen by a toilet thief. Ultimately the talking toilet is returned to its rightful owner on Kings Head Island, to Gene's great sadness.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: When Frond is handing out flour sack babies, the chalkboard behind him reads:
    CHILD REARING
DO: Hug, love, carry, read to, rock to sleep, care
DON'T: Leave baby in rain, make into cake, wash, toss, shake, show them music videos, smoke, sit on, prank phone calls, re-sell, give to stranger, kabuki theater, take in hot tub
  • Given Name Reveal: Max Flush's real name at the end of the episode is revealed to be Tim Jones.
Linda: He said his name was Max Flush!
    Louise: And you believed him?
  • If You Die, I Call Your Stuff: Inverted. When Louise snarks about never getting to wear a dead person's clothes, Linda says that when she dies, Louise can have all her socks. Tina is upset because she wanted those.
  • Literal-Minded:
    • Teddy apparently thought that Bob's name is "Bob Burger."
    • The toilet, due to its UI.
      Gene: Activate wings!
      Toilet: Playing artist Wings.
  • Ludicrous Precision: The toilet knows 1,100,005 jokes.
  • Naked People Are Funny: The police officer at the end just happens to be the son of the dead guy whose suit Bob was wearing, and he insists on taking it back, leaving Bob in his underwear.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: One of ET The Extraterrestrial in case you somehow couldn't tell.
  • Running Gag:
    • Though only a Brick Joke in the episode proper, this episode sets up the series-wide joke that Teddy thinks Bob's name is Bob Burger.
    • This is also the first episode where Linda tells the kids to stay out of her room before she leaves them alone in the apartment.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Bob's new suit brings him a lot of good fortune. It causes the judge to immediately waive his parking tickets even though his defense is shoddy, it nets his restaurant a decent amount of business, and it causes him to get hit on by a trio of young women. Outside the courthouse, it also causes a young boy to ask if he can marry his mother.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Silver Fox: Downplayed; Bob isn't that old (44 at the time of this episode), but he's older and balding. But apparently all he needs to be hit on by a trio of mid-20s women is a nice outfit.
  • Status Quo Is God: Bob's new suit is reclaimed by the son of its original owner at the end of the episode.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • Gene attempts to carry the toilet to a power source. Because it's a toilet, he can't even lift it off the ground.
    • Toilets really can't fly, Gene.
  • Teen Pregnancy: Zeke mentions that his mother was pregnant with him during the prom.
  • Tempting Fate: Gene declares he'll always defend the toilet. A second later, the battery dies.
  • Toilet Humor: Perhaps a literal example; this episode has Gene befriend a talking toilet in a homage to E.T. the Extraterrestrial.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: The episode is essentially E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial with a talking toilet.
  • Who Would Be Stupid Enough?: When Bob and Linda realize that Max Flush is really a thief (whose real name is Tim Jones), Louise asks if they seriously were fooled by the name "Max Flush". They hastily try to claim otherwise.
