Recap / Bobs Burgers S 10 E 22 Prank You For Being A Friend

Go To

Louise's classmate Kaylee comes to her for lessons on how to get in trouble, while Bob reluctantly agrees to bring Jimmy Pesto his hernia medication.

Trope You for Being a Friend:

  • Asshole Victim: Bob says to Jimmy what the audience is likely thinking:
Bob: How's your pain that I'm glad you're feeling?
  • Blunt "No": Bob's first, second, and third response when Trev asks him to deliver Jimmy's medication.
  • The Caper: To get Kaylee in enough trouble to be sent to homeschool, Louise plans out a big prank during lunchtime with the Think-gineers.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Tina remembers Kaylee and is still upset about how their "Big Fish/Little Fish" relationship went.
    • After Bob and Linda describe Jimmy Pesto’s hernia, Teddy remembers he had one before. Teddy previously mentioned in "The Helen Hunt" that he herniated a disc moving Kathleen’s fridge.
    • Melted Kuchi Kopi can be seen on Louise's shelf.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Mr. Frond threatens to put Louise with the Think-gineers, a group of students who do science projects after school. He's apparently been doing this to other troublemakers, including Zeke.
  • Do Wrong, Right: Kaylee wants Louise to teach her to be a troublemaker just like her so she could get kicked out of school and have to be homeschooled.
  • Even Nerds Have Standards: Wet blanket that he is, even Frond believes the Think-gineers are dorky and has been using forced membership in the club as a punishment for troublemakers.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Louise ultimately tries to stop Kaylee from getting kicked out of school when she learns Kaylee's doing it so she never has to leave her home or ever deal with people again. Louise didn't have a problem with Kaylee's desire to be homeschooled again until she learned Kaylee wants to isolate herself, which she clearly believes isn't healthy.
  • Exact Words: Frond warns Louise not to do any more rubber cockroach pranks. So when Kaylee wants to get in trouble, Louise figures that she could get away with one more roach prank if it's Kaylee doing it and not her.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Jimmy Pesto lets Bob and Linda play slot cars with him at the end of the B-plot.
  • Hikikomori: Kaylee's reason for wanting to be homeschooled.
  • Homeschooled Kids: Kaylee wants to be one so she wouldn’t have to interact with people and tries to get expelled for pranking as a way to do it. However, in the end she decides to stick around in Wagstaff and willingly joins the Think-gineers to make friends.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Near-friendless divorcee Jimmy Pesto calls Bob and Linda lonely.
  • Improvised Catapult: Louise sees the Think-gineers working on a toy catapult and convinces them to build a larger one for Kaylee's prank.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Frond thinks Louise will graduate from bugs to drugs solely because the two rhyme.
  • Irony: Trev lampshades the irony in his uncle not wanting to mail a stamp collection.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Rudy after Frond catches Louise and Kaylee with the roach catapult. He later runs to Frond's office to confess to making the catapult, but by then the issue with Louise and Kaylee has been resolved.
  • Only Friend: This episode confirms that Trev is Jimmy Pesto's only real friend, which honestly makes a lot of sense.
  • Pet the Dog: The B-plot ends with Jimmy overcoming his Jerkass tendencies at least long enough to let Bob and Linda play with his slot cars. From what it seems, they have a genuinely good time together.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The episode title is a reference to the Andrew Gold song "Thank You for Being a Friend".
  • The Prankster: Louise has earned a reputation for elaborate, meticulously planned pranks, which is why Kaylee asks for her help.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Stealing the Credit: Frond takes full credit for Louise doing the right thing with Kaylee, even though she wasn't prompted by anything he said.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: When Louise tells Rudy she's not being sarcastic about going to the Thinkgineers, Rudy lampshades that he didn't think she was sarcastic until she said she wasn't.
