Recap / Bob's Burgers S 10 E 21 "Local She-Ro"

Go To

While trying to show Tina what's great about their town, Linda ends up on the trail of a legendary local singer.

Trope-al She-ro:

  • "Cavemen vs. Astronauts" Debate: The B-plot involves Teddy getting banned from a sports call-in show because he disagreed with the host's take on a hockey player trade and got verbally abusive.
  • Continuity Nod: Two of the people in Tina's New York City fantasy are the Wonder Wharf employee who she stopped from smashing Mr. Goiter and the barista who once called the police on the Belchers.
  • Faking the Dead: When Linda asks about Dove Shannon, the shopkeeper says she's dead, but then she hears a woman singing as she drives by and realizes it was Dove. When Linda catches up to her, Dove explains that there's a mutual understanding with the shopkeeper that whenever they want to lay low the other says they're dead; and then she says the shopkeeper is dead, which takes Linda a little while to understand.
  • Freudian Excuse: The kids play up Teddy's sad life to make it clear why he's a bit on-edge to the radio host.
  • Houseboat Hero: Dove Shannon now lives in a hidden houseboat community.
  • I Have No Son!: Linda yells "You're not my daughter!" when Tina refuses to use her as a stepping stone. She immediately takes it back and finally realizes she went nuts.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Linda claims that trespassing can't be illegal if it's for school.
  • Liar Revealed: When Tammy begins her report on her trip to New York City, Jocelyn blurts out that she stayed in the hotel the whole trip because she thought the city smelled like pee and hot-dogs.
  • Noodle Incident: During the credits, Linda refers to a car wash where someone famous died.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The episode title is a reference to Local Hero.
  • Reclusive Artist: In-Universe; Dove Shannon used to be a successful singer, but eventually moved back home and is now living in anonymity in a reclusive community.
  • Sanity Slippage: Linda starts losing it when she becomes determined to have Tina meet Dove Shannon, culminating in getting stuck up to her chest in water while screaming at Tina to use her head as a stepping stone.
    Linda: JUMP ON MY FACE!
  • Saying Too Much: Jocelyn completely dismantles Tammy's report on New York City by claiming Tammy never even left her hotel room, completely missing Tammy's hints to keep quiet.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Small Town Boredom: Tina's class has to do a report on the place that means the most to them, and Tammy talks up her trip to New York City, which makes Tina reconsider her stance on their town. Linda, who had dreams of leaving Seymour’s Bay herself when she was younger, wants Tina to appreciate her hometown more and offers to take her on a tour to show her how great their little community is. She then goes overboard trying to track down Dove Shannon, a local singer who left a life of fame and fortune to remain in their town, to find out what made her stay there.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Linda believes Tina's obsession with New York is because she doesn't appreciate her hometown. Bob accurately points out that it's just because the topic came up in school.
