Recap / Batman The Brave And The Bold S 2 E 7 A Bat Divided

Go To

An altercation with Doctor Double X results in the birth of a new hero, and Batman getting split in three.

Tropes:

  • Bad Guy Bar: Filled with all manner of D-List villains, playing pool and minding their own business, until Physical Batman crashes the party.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Jason's response to Ronnie's biting descriptions of the three Batmen. Being that he's the only one that can hear Ronnie at the moment, Jason is suitably embarrassed.
  • Bland-Name Product: The vending machines in the bar Batman crashes sells delicious, refreshing Pop.
  • Bound and Gagged: Riddler and his goons also abducted Skeets, and he's the one tied up and gagged, presumably so he doesn't save Booster from making an idiot of himself. Well, more of an idiot.
  • Deadly Game: The teaser has Riddler 'hosting' "Riddle Me This", with special guest star Batman tied to a giant question mark rigged to electrocute him if Booster Gold gives a wrong answer (and from the looks of it, Riddler was just planning to kill Batman anyway).
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Mid-game, Booster manages to at least point out that if the Riddler had any interest in fairness (which he obviously doesn't), he'd ask questions Booster actually could answer.
  • The Easy Way or the Hard Way: After busting into the Bad Guy Bar, Physical Batman says he'll be making the patrons pay for their crimes and says this to them. When the opt to fight it out rather than just surrender, Physical Batman openly smiles.
  • Freak Lab Accident: Doctor Double X was hoping to steal some nuclear power to get a boost. Instead, it blasts Batman into three people, and fuses Ronnie Raymond and Jason Rusch into two.
  • Freudian Trio: The three Batmen. Physical Batman is the Id, constantly hotheaded and thinking the best way to solve a problem is beating the living hell out of whatever opponent he can find. Science Batman is the Superego, being logical and stoic in response to literally everything. Slacker Batman is the Ego, keeping Batman from falling into either extreme by balancing them out with his humanity.
  • Geek Physique: Jason, pre-accident, is tiny, scrawny and has glasses. Compare that to his comic self, who has none of those things.
  • Giver of Lame Names: Slacker Batman thinks the not-yet-named Firestorm should call himself "Flame Dude". Ronnie thinks it's catchy.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Physical Batman is in a perpetual state of rage.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Slacker Batman is a lazy, unfazed dude in a perpetual state of the munchies, but Jason explains that he's just as necessary as Batman's brains and emotions, bringing the necessary humanity the other two lack.
  • Hidden Depths: Slacker Batman is perpetually checked out, but he actually represents Batman's inherent humanity.
  • Idiot Hero: Booster Gold fails the most basic and well known riddles in spectacularly idiotic fashion. Which is almost certainly why Riddler abducted him in the first place.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Ronnie's loud and kind of stupid, openly admitting he doesn't really want the job of being Jason's teacher, but when things get hairy he insists Jason get himself to safety first, rather than risk his life trying to help him.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: When the three Batmen go over their inherent characteristics, Ronnie is blunt but accurate when summing them up, particularly when describing Physical Batman as a bully.
  • Literal Split Personality: Batman gets split into his rational side (Science Batman), his emotional side (Physical), and what's left afterwards ("Slacker").
  • Other Me Annoys Me: The one thing the three Batmen can all agree on. Neither of them actually wants to be merged back into one being in the end, until Jason points out how they all need to be together for Batman to be an effective hero.
  • Spock Speak: Science Batman speaks in a more sophisticated and verbose nature than the other two Batmen.
  • Stoners Are Funny: While the show can't outright say it, this is what Slacker Batman is.
  • Suddenly Shouting: Physical Batman does this a lot, with "BATMAN DOES NOT EAT NACHOS!" being a particularly memorable example.
  • Swiss-Cheese Security: Doctor Ecks is a registered worker at the nuclear lab, allowing him to walk right in with no disguise greater than a labcoat, even though Batman's dialogue suggests he's been at the supervillain business for some time now.
  • This Cannot Be!: The Cavalier in his own unique way in response to seeing three Batmen at once.
The Cavalier: Methinks mine eyes deceive me! Batman thrice?!
  • Training Montage: Jason gets to grips with his new powers with Science Batman's help, while Physical Batman works out and Slacker Batman does nothing.
  • Villains Out Shopping: The villains at the Bad Guy Bar were just playing pool or talking before Physical Batman started a brawl.
  • Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe: The Cavalier's way of talking is enough to make Ronnie plead for someone to punch him out already.
