Recap / Batman The Brave And The Bold S 1 E 25 Mayhem Of The Music Meister

Go To

  • All Love Is Unrequited: Black Canary's love for Batman, the Music Meister's love for Black Canary. Subverted with Green Arrow's love for Canary, which is eventually requited.
  • Batman Gambit: Batman gets the hypnotized Black Canary to sing as loudly as possible, so that she will activate her power. At the right moment, he snags Music Meister's microphone so that the resulting sonic scream is amplified and breaks the hypnotic control over everyone else.
  • Big "NO!": The Music Meister right before Black Canary's sonic scream ruins his plan.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Twice!
    • Music Meister knocks out Black Canary and Batman after she rejects his advances. But instead of finishing the job himself, he does the classic example of putting them in the below-mentioned death trap
    • Music Meister has Batman surrounded, and could just order his goons to beat him up and/or remove his earplugs. But then he gets baited into a singing contest between Batman and Canary on who can sing higher.
  • The Cameo: "Drives Us Bats" shows an assortment of villains in lock-up, such as the Joker, Two-Face, Scarecrow, Mad Hatter, Crazy Quilt, Calendar Man, Felix Faust, Baby Face, and Kite Man.
  • Dance Battler: Music Meister commands the heroes and villains to "show Batman how well you dance", and they break into a dance that evolves into combat.
  • Death Trap: The Music Meister puts Batman and Black Canary in a comically over-the-top one, set to music as the aptly-named Deathtrap.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Despite moments before planning to hijack a satellite to cause world-wide chaos, Gorilla Grodd, Clock King and Black Manta find being made to sing against their will terrible.
  • Evil Is Petty: Music Meister insists his motive is to settle the score. His endgame is hypnotize everyone to do what he says, which mostly involves robbing everything that's not nailed down.
  • Excuse Me While I Multitask: Black Canary offhandedly fights off mooks while singing about and swooning over Batman.
  • Fighting from the Inside: Green Arrow briefly manages to resist his mind control when he almost punches Canary.
  • Freudian Excuse: Music Meister was bullied as a child for singing in choir, until the day he got his powers.
  • "The Hero Sucks" Song: "Drives Us Bats" is basically the Music Meister roasting Batman in song form, and he gets all the villains (and even some heroes) to join him.
Music Meister: He's got no superpowers, he's just a flying rat. It's a good thing we've got Arkham, 'cause he really drives us bats!
  • "I Am" Song: "I'm the Music Meister" is this for the Music Meister, naturally, covering his powers, backstory, and identity.
  • Instant Costume Change: The Meister is able to change his outfit on the fly (he goes through five different ones in "Drives Us Bats" alone). All of his costumes represent a different genre of music.
  • "I Want" Song: "If Only" is this for both the Music Meister and Black Canary as they delve into their love for Black Canary and Batman respectively.
  • Lampshade Hanging: After "Death Trap", Batman points out that Canary kept the song going even after the Meister had left.
Batman: Was the singing really necessary?
  • Love at First Note: Music Meister falls in love with Black Canary when he hears her singing.
  • Love Triangle: Green Arrow loves Black Canary, who loves Batman, who only loves justice. Music Meister's love for Canary makes it a triangle on a stick.
  • Mad Artist: In case wanting to take over the world wasn't something of a hint, Music Meister is shown performing to an audience of cardboard standees.
  • Musical Episode: Notable for having somewhat of an in-story justification: the story is about a villain with a hypnotic voice controlling the world through music. Probably the show's most audacious use of Refuge in Audacity.
  • The Music Meister: The Trope Namer, though not the first example.
  • Musical World Hypotheses: Flavor 1 — The Music Meister has the ability to make people sing and dance against their will.
  • Mythology Gag: Both the Batusi and shark repellent are brought up during "Drives Us Bats".
  • Near-Villain Victory: Music Meister comes very close to winning; by the midpoint of "The World is Mine", he has, to all appearances, every single person in the world except Batman under his sway.
  • Oh, Crap!: Black Canary's expression when her earplugs are removed and she's forced to fight Batman.
  • One-Hit Kill: Every villain in this episode goes down in one punch.
  • Psychic-Assisted Suicide: In order to get away from Batman, Music Meister orders the heroes and villains to dance into a launching rocket's jet blast.
Music Meister: And now that Batman's been delayed
    Your usefulness has passed.
    A distraction's what I need,
So all of you, kick into that blast!
  • The Resenter: As part of "Drives Us Bats", even the heroes get in on singing about how Batman upstages them all the time.
    Aquaman: Other heeeeroes often ask
Green Arrow: Why is he always the top cat?
  • Save the Villain: Batman saves Gorilla Grodd, Clock King, and Back Manta from roasting under the rocket's blast.
  • Secondary Color Nemesis: Music Meister has orange-coloured hair, and every single one of his outfits contains at least some purple or green.
  • Shout-Out: When the Meister forces the characters to attack Batman, they start snapping like in West Side Story.
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: Black Canary sings a beautiful love ballad while kicking the crap out of thugs.
  • Triumphant Reprise: Black Canary and Green Arrow sing a sweeping reprise of "If Only" at the end of the episode.
  • Villain Love Song: "If Only" for the Music Meister. He sings about his love for Black Canary while she sings about her love for Batman.
  • Villainous Crush: Music Meister develops one on Canary after hearing her Beautiful Singing Voice.
  • Villain Song: Music Meister has "I'm the Music Meister", "Drives Us Bats" and "The World is Mine", as well as half of "Death Trap" and "If Only".
  • Villain Team-Up: Before all the singing started, Grodd, Black Manta, and Clock King had their own plans for the communications satellite. The Music Meister simply took advantage for his own purposes.
  • Vocal Range Exceeded: Though in Canary's case it's not that her voice starts breaking. It's just that once she reaches a high enough pitch, her Canary Cry kicks in.
