Tropes:

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: General Yunan says she's the scourge of the Sand Wars and the defeater of Ragnar the Wretched.
  • Art Imitates Art: In the episode of Suspicion Island shown, the face Randy makes once he lets out a Big "NO!" is reminiscent of the famous painting The Scream.
  • Badass Boast: After Sasha claims Yunan doesn't seem like much of a General since she doesn't have an army. Yunan responds with one of these.
Yunan: I had an army once. [reveals her gauntlet claws and cuts down several trees behind her] THEY SLOWED ME DOWN!
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: Grime initially seems angry at Braddock and Percy for helping Sasha stage a fake attack against him, seemingly getting back in his groove, until he declares the two of them belong on Suspicion Island and invites them to watch with him.
  • Beard of Sorrow: After losing the Tower, being named a criminal by Newtopia, and having most of his army desert him, we find Grime has more or less given up on life and grown out a beard as he lays around eating snacks and watching soap operas.
  • Broken Tears: Sasha looks to be on the verge of this when Grime tells Sasha that her intense training is a coping mechanism to deal with how her relationship with Anne has irreversibly changed.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Sasha and Grime finally return in this episode after their last appearance in the Season 1 finale.
    • Likewise, Braddock and Percy also return, where they are the only soldiers still loyal to Grime.
  • Call-Back: Sasha has Suspicion Island on her phone. Anne realized she had downloaded the latest season of the show back in "Taking Charge". Just like the Plantars, Grime becomes addicted to it.
  • Ceiling Cling: General Yunan does this to spy on Braddock and Percy after pretending to leave.
  • Chirping Crickets: A cricket starts chirping in the diner after Yunan lists her titles to show nobody cares..and then it cuts to a table where the cricket is the meal.
  • Continuity Nod: Sasha still has the scar on her right cheek from her duel with Anne back in "Reunion".
  • A Day in the Limelight: The focus is switched to Sasha to see what she's been up to since we last saw her.
  • Defensive "What?": Grime says this when Sasha gets mad at him for lazily not participating in an "attack" on him and her.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Invoked word-for-word by Grime when Sasha admits that she wants to protect him out of friendship.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Sasha's own behavior in this episode is very reminiscent of having gone through a bad breakup.
  • Emotion Suppression: Sasha has been doing this since her and Anne's fight at Toad Tower. Word of God states she's doing this because it's easier than facing the reality that she wasn't the friend to Anne she should have been.
  • Faceā€“Heel Turn: Sasha's heart has hardened as a result of her repressing emotions/feelings towards Anne since their fight at Toad Tower and now seeks to get even with Anne.
  • False Flag Operation: Sasha has Percy and Braddock pretend to be bounty hunters in an attempt to get Grime out of his funk, but Grime is too lazy to save himself and lets Sasha handle it, forcing her to give up on the ruse.
  • Gasshole: Along with loafing around and eating snacks, Grime has taken up drinking bog grog and burping so loud it's practically a roar.
  • He's Back!: A villainous example with Captain Grime, who is reinvigorated by the defeat of Yunan and intends to take over Newtopia.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: Since the destruction of Toad Tower in last season's finale and the subsequent desertion of his followers, the previously fearsome warrior Grime has fallen into a major funk in which he expresses little interest to do more than lounge around eating junk food and watch Suspicion Island on Sasha's phone. Fortunately, he manages to snap out of it by the episode's end and resolves to rebuild his army with Sasha to overthrow Newtopia and conquer Amphibia.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: Sasha gets mad at Yunan for calling Grime a disgusting slob, despite the fact that she had been calling him similar things for most of the episode, using the standard excuse that only she gets to insult him like that.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Grime pointing out to Sasha that she is only using her intense training as a distraction for her lingering feelings about her falling out with Anne is entirely correct.
  • Large Ham: General Yunan is this, especially when she lists her titles.
  • Overly-Nervous Flop Sweat: Braddock and Percy sweat bullets when trying to convince Yunan they don't know Grime.
  • Rank Up: Sometime before this episode, Sasha was promoted to 1st Lieutenant.
  • The Reveal:
    • Toad Tower was subordinate to Newtopia, and the toads were ruling/oppressing the valley in service to the newts rather than for their own sake. Furthermore, Grime was branded a traitor for losing the tower, and is now a fugitive from the newt authorities.
    • Also, it is mentioned that Grime was originally a gladiator before he was put in charge of the toad army, which explains a lot about his general demeanor and his lack of leadership ability.
  • Running Gag: General Yunan always lists her titles when introducing herself, claiming the repetition helps people remember her. This is exploited by Sasha when Yunan has her cornered on the cliff, getting her to go into it again so Grime can sneak up and push her off the cliff.
  • Sequel Episode: To the Season 1 finale, which has Sasha and Grime recovering from the events.
  • Sequel Hook: Grime intends to take over Newtopia for himself, and then all of Amphibia, while Sasha promises that she and Anne aren't done yet.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: Percy and Braddock disappear from the first half after the former carelessly reveals Grime and Sasha's location to Yunan.
  • Shout-Out:
    • After his defeat at Toad Tower, Grime became a bearded and overweight recluse who spends most of his time sitting in a coach and watching TV series on Sasha's phone. What other Disney-owned character became an overweight and bearded recluse after a colossal failure? Exactly! Looks like Grime is trying to imitate Chris Hemsworth the wrong way.
    • Speaking of Sasha's phone, notice how the case has a pear symbol not unlike many devices used on Dan Schneider shows, which themselves are parodied off Apple.
    • Yunan's title rant has at least three different poses directly from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
  • Sinister Whistling: Yunan engages in this when coming to meet Grime and Sasha.
  • Soft Water: Yunan is perfectly fine after getting pushed off a cliff into a river.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Sasha has been training non-stop since her loss to Anne, which allows her to fight on mostly-even terms with General Yunan, even breaking the claws on one of her gauntlets. Yunan only gets the better of her because of the amphibian's Prehensile Tail.
  • Undying Loyalty: Percy and Braddock are the only toads of Grime's army to not leave him.
  • Villainous Friendship: By this point, Grime and Sasha truly see each other as friends rather than useful allies.
  • "Wanted!" Poster: The Newtopian army has put out a bounty on Grime for deserting his post following the destruction of Toad Tower.

Grime's Analysis

Grime isn't too far off the mark that Sasha only trains to take her mind off the fact that Anne stood up to her and that their friendship isn't the same anymore

How well does it match the trope?
