Most children's entertainment of this era was structured to be highly episodic, with entire plotlines developing and concluding within a single episode. So if there was a villain, they were usually designed to be introduced, fought and defeated within the same 22-minute span. And for decades, this was how children's television worked, clinging rigorously to the Monster of the Week formula. [...] But then came the villains of Dragon Ball Z. Ultra-powerful, near-invincible demigods, beings whose mere existence was so cataclysmic that they would dominate entire story arcs, committing atrocities on a mass scale and forcing our heroes into tense, desperate battles where survival seemed unlikely and victory felt impossible. No longer monsters of the week, these were simply monsters, routinely and soundly defeating our heroes, ones that shattered the 22-minute structure and planted their feet deep in the story, staying there for dozens and dozens of episodes, during which the entire plot would center solely around their existence.

"Ah ha ha ha. I am now invincible! There is nothing you can do! And now it is time for the destruction to begin... Let it begin with you, as you wallow in helplessness like upside-down turtles! L-POWER!"
Super Dimentio, Super Paper Mario

"Your struggle is futile, your foundations uncertain. I am sovereign from the laws of gods and man. A constant. I know, with absolute certainty... That I have fought this battle more times than there are droplets in the ocean. And I have never lost."

"Even if you kill me I'll always be here. You'll just ruin your life like the fuck-up you are."

''Sup mortal. I really appreciate you making the effort to come all the way up here and vanquish me and all, but I'm kinda indestructible. Yeah, I can't be killed. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that to you."
Trogdor the Burninator, Peasant's Quest

When you're up against Nyx, power doesn't mean a thing. It's like trying to fight the inevitable, like death or the flow of time. Nyx can't be defeated. She... just can't.
Ryoji Mochizuki, Persona 3 Reload

If you look at every single final villain of Jojos Bizarre Adventure, their power levels are always a level far beyond that of our main characters. They are only able to be eventually taken down in the final act due to either their own hubris or the cunning and intelligence of the main characters using their powers in interesting and compelling ways, often a combination of the two. Unless, of course, your name is Giorno Giovanni.
