"Most people don’t try to become adults, they just reach a point where they realize they can’t stay as children any longer."

    Comic Books
"I wanna grow up, but I don't wanna grow old. I don't wanna die."

"Looking back, I don't think I'd have been in such a hurry to reach adulthood if I'd known the whole thing was going to be ad-libbed."

Calvin: How come grown-ups don't go out to play?
Calvin's Dad: Grown-ups can only justify playing outside by calling it exercise, doing it when they'd rather not, and keeping records to quantify their performance.
Calvin: That sounds like a job.
Calvin's Dad: ...Except you don't get paid.
Calvin: So play is worse than work?
Calvin's Dad: Being a grown-up is tough.

Peppermint Patty: What do you think security is, Chuck?
Charlie Brown: Security? Security is sleeping in the back seat of the car. When you're a little kid, and you've been somewhere with your Mom and Dad, and it's night, and you're riding home in the car, you can sleep in the back seat. You don't have to worry about anything. Your Mom and Dad are in the front seat, and they do all the worrying... They take care of everything...
Peppermint Patty: That's real neat!
Charlie Brown: But it doesn't last! Suddenly, you're grown up, and it can never be that way again! Suddenly, it's over, and you'll never get to sleep in the back seat again! Never!
Peppermint Patty: Never?
Charlie Brown: Absolutely never!
Peppermint Patty: Hold my hand, Chuck!

Big Mama: Honey, Copper's gonna come back a trained huntin' dog. A real killer.
Tod: Oh, no. Not my friend Copper. He will never change.
Big Mama: I hope you're right, Tod.
Tod: And we'll keep on being friends forever. Won't we, Big Mama?
Big Mama: Darlin', forever is a long, long time. And time has a way of changing things.

"Go on! Go back and grow up! But I'm warnin' ya: once you're grown up, you can never come back. Never!"

"How long will it last, Woody? Do you really think Andy is going to take you to college... or on his honeymoon? Andy's growing up... and there's nothing you can do about it."
Stinky Pete, Toy Story 2

"Your spirit will remain forever among the humans. You shall age like them, you shall die like them, and all memory of you will fade in time. And we'll vanish along with it. You will never see us again!"
The Faun to Ofelia, Pan's Labyrinth

"Shades of the prison-house begin to close
Upon the growing Boy"
William Wordsworth, "Ode: Intimations of Immortality"

"There was a time when meadow, grove, and stream,
The earth, and every common sight,
To me did seem
Apparelled in celestial light,
The glory and the freshness of a dream.
It is not now as it hath been of yore;—
Turn wheresoe'er I may,
By night or day,
The things which I have seen I now can see no more.

The Rainbow comes and goes,
And lovely is the Rose,
The Moon doth with delight
Look round her when the heavens are bare,
Waters on a starry night
Are beautiful and fair;
The sunshine is a glorious birth;
But yet I know, where'er I go,
That there hath past away a glory from the earth."
William Wordsworth, "Ode: Intimations of Immortality"

"The energy you drew on so extravagantly when you were a kid, the energy you thought would never exhaust itself — that slipped away somewhere between eighteen and twenty-four, to be replaced by something much duller, something as bogus as a coke high: purpose, maybe, or goals, or whatever rah-rah Junior Chamber of Commerce word you wanted to use."

Robbie: I thought getting to do everything I wanted would be great, but... this whole thingnote  has taught me a valuable lesson.
Earl: That with freedom comes responsibility?
Robbie: No. That your life bites. No wonder you yell at me. I'll just stay out of your way from now on.
Earl: Yes, thanks. And you know what? I learned something about your life too.
Robbie: That it's frustrating being under someone else's control all the time?
Earl: No, that it's way better than mine.
Robbie: Um, you're not gonna hold that against me, are ya?
Earl: Every chance I get.
Robbie: Figures.
Earl: Cause you see son, it's one of my responsibilities as a parent to wean you from life's joy, and prepare you for the relentless heartache that is adulthood.

"Savor the fruit of life, my young friends. It has a sweet taste when it is fresh from the vines. But don’t live too long: the taste turns bitter."

"Martin, I only wanted to tell you that this is a wonderful time of life for you. Don't let any of it go by without enjoying it. There won't be any more merry-go-rounds, no more cotton candy, no more band concerts. I only wanted to tell you that this is a wonderful time for you. Now. Here. That's all, Martin. That's all I wanted to tell you. God help me. That's all I wanted to tell you."

"I miss those days, and so I pout like a grown jerk
Wishin' all I had to do now, was finish homework"
Ahmad, "Back In The Day"

Growing up
really fucking sucks
AJJ, "Growing Up"

You're used to fighting at the speed of sound
But now each time you try, you hit the ground
Held by the legacy behind you
When wiki says you’re still around fifteen
But time goes by, Green Hill is not that green
You're not a tape and no one can rewind you

Is it true? A hero with no rings in his hand?
Why so blue? You saved the world but can't save on rent!

You run so fast to escape from the pain!
But heavy thoughts keep on scraping your brain!
You're crushing in your thirties,
Crushing in your thirties, yeah!

You lose control on the slightest turn!
No time to live, no time to learn!
You're crushing in your thirties,
Crushing in your thirties, yeah!

(Gotta take it slow!)

"And everybody knows
It hurts to grow up
And everybody does
(So weird to be back here)
Let me tell you what
The years go on and we're still fighting, and we're still fighting it
And you're so much like me
I'm sorry"
Ben Folds, "Still Fighting It"

Oh simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go somewhere only we know?
Keane, "Somewhere Only We Know"

I shake my fist at the very same gate that I would've climbed up before I became lame
Now I just curse and pretend it's the same
Curse at a person who ain't do a thing
Aesop Rock (feat. TOBACCO as Malibu Ken), "Purple Moss"

I feel like no one ever told the truth to me,
About growing up and what a struggle it would be.
In my tangled state of mind,
I've been looking back to find
Where I went wrong.

So it's not loaded stadiums or ballparks
And we're not kids on swingsets on the blacktop
And I thought at 15 that I'd have it down by 16
And 24 keeps breathing in my face
Like a mad whore
And 24 keeps pounding at my door

Like a friend you don't want to see

Oldness comes with a smile
To every love-given child
Oldness comes to rile
The youth who dream suicide

So here I am in my new apartment
In a big city, they just dropped me off
It's so much colder than I ever thought it would be
So I tuck myself in, turn my night light on
Wish I'd never grown up
Wish I'd never grown up
Oh
I don't wanna grow up
Wish I'd never grown up
Could still be little
Oh
I don't wanna grow up
Wish I'd never grown up
Could still be simple
Taylor Swift, "Never Grow Up"

So this is growing up
Or maybe growing older
But I failed to ask the question
Why the innocence is over
Vanilla Sky, "1981"

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily,
Oh, joyfully, oh, playfully watching me,
But then they sent me away to teach me how to be sensible,
Logical, oh, responsible, practical,
Then they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
Oh, clinical, oh intellectual, cynical.
Supertramp, "The Logical Song"

When I'm lying in my bed at night
I don't wanna grow up
Nothing ever seems to turn out right
I don't wanna grow up
How do you move in a world of fog that's always changing things
Makes me wish that I could be a dog
When I see the price that you pay
Tom Waits, "I Don't Want to Grow Up"

"Brats like you are so damned naive... You piss me off. Listen... you might have hopes and dreams right now, but that's only because you know nothing about reality. One day you'll see... You'll be faced with the boring reality that boxes you in, no matter where you go."
Tohru Adachi, Persona 4

Youth is accompanied by tears. Have you ever had such an experience, Mr. Commander?
Primula, Flower Knight Girl

"Man... life was magical when I was a kid. Nowadays, it's just boring... Look at everyone with their "hopes", "dreams", and "high expectations"... You're only setting yourself up for disappointment."
Adeline, Kirby Guardian

    Webcomics
"Darn it! No one told me being a grown up would create more suckiness."
Mewn Ramses, Funny Farm

Max: You know what sounds really sad? Growing up.
Cricket: Tell me about it. Me and my bro used to watch Pro Sass Fishing all the time. But now he’s in middle school and suddenly it’s "gay".
Bee: Laugh while you can, chumps! One’a these days you guys are gonna wake up with crappy little beards and all you’ll wanna do is see "a tit".
Max: Oh yeah? Well you know what I heard? I HEARD that eventually YOU’RE gonna be rocketing blood out of your own personal torso!
Cricket: Take it to the bank, boys, we’re all screwed sideways. It’s just a matter of time before we’re all awkwardly grabbing each other in the back of my mom’s Ford Fiesta.

"As a kid, these messages were fucking everywhere, even in shows I really did like. They treated childhood as this something special that you can never recapture. And these messages are still in a lot on of places, and they gave me a lot of anxiety about growing up and it was something I was continuously afraid of doing. Many of the things I've said are based on my own experiences, but this anxiety is something that's not. I've talked to many young people, and it's very common with the upcoming generation. So many of them are anxious about the world they're coming into and pieces of trash like this episode do not help matters! There is a ton of anxieties that young people already have about becoming an adult: the current political climate, global warming, human rights violations, disease pandemics. "Enjoy your life while you're young kids, yuk yuk yuk, because it's going to get a lot worse." This is not a message I find acceptable in any means.

Let's lay down the facts; no, there is no guarantee that your life will get worse as you get older, or you won't have the tools to handle any situation you come across. You will get new challenges, yes, but they're not insurmountable. Not by any stretch of the imagination. If the future that
Sabrina or whatever is showing you is not desirable, you don't have to go that direction. You want to know the main thing that separates adulthood from childhood? That is choice. That is what you'll have more and more of as you become an adult. Not all choices are going to be fun or easy, but they're going to be yours. So make the choices that you'll be happy with. You end up in a life like Sabrina's if you fall into complacency. People who stick with their current partner or their current crappy apartment, or their shitty job because they're too insecure to think they deserve something better. This episode disgusts me on a fundamental level. What really is the message here? Enjoy being a kid, even though it sucks, it's all downhill from here!

I didn't expect this review to be so angry or so long, but sometimes you don't get what you expect. And you know what? Sometimes that's a good thing. I expected to get the kind of life Sabrina had as an adult. Or worse, being a homeless guy without any hopes until I died of hypothermia at 25. Let's just say I got a much happier ending, and you can definitely have a happier ending too."
The Mysterious Mr. Enter on the Sabrina: The Animated Series episode "Anywhere But Here"

    Western Animation
"I wish I could be you, Mac. No job, no responsibilities. You will never be a child again. Don't let it pass you by. All that matters is right here, right now. Take advantage of every precious moment. This is your time to do the most awesome of awesome things."

Kaeloo: I've been thinking. I think it's very very very very very bad for you to think that life is all about play. (she pulls on a rope, making a cardboard box fall out of the sky)
Stumpy: Hey, what's that, huh? What's that? What's that?
Kaeloo: It's a growing box!
Mr. Cat: A what?
Kaeloo: A growing box! You step inside, you press the button there, and, when you come out, you're all grown!
Mr. Cat: But, what for?
Kaeloo: Well, to prepare us. Because one day, we'll be grown-ups too. We'll have responsibility. Bank overdrafts, insurance dues, a family to feed, taxes to pay, divorces...
Mr. Cat: Hm. I'm out.
Kaeloo: Then we'll do without you. Right, buddies?
Stumpy: Oh yeah, hahaha!... I'm out, too.
(Cut to Kaeloo forcibly carrying Stumpy into the growing box)
Stumpy: No! Nooo! I don't wanna grow up! I don't wanna grow up...

Clay Puppington: Behaving like a grown up is many things. First and foremost, it's doing things that you hate doing.
Orel Puppington: Like doing what, pop?
Clay: Like dealing with people that make you unhappy...being stressed about things you have no control over...and working soul numbing jobs.
Orel: Ohh.
Clay: Then, gradually, as we endure these hardships and accept them as normal, that's when we've finally earned the right to get drunk and be emotionally distant from our families.

TJ: Imagine it, guys. When you're a kindergartener, you eat whatever you want, drink whatever you want, go wherever you wanna go. There's no rules. When you paint, you don't use a brush. You just stick your hands right in the paint and feel the color. And you take naps, guys. Right in the middle of the day. Do you have any idea how refreshing that is?
Gus: But, TJ, it's so... primitive.
TJ: Primitive? Maybe so. But I was free, you guys. Free! In fact, there's a part of me that wishes I could go back.
Gus: But TJ, you can't go back.
Gretchen: He's right. Even they can't go back.
TJ: What do you mean, Gretchen?
Gretchen: Don't you see? Their way of life is coming to an end. By this time next year, they'll be first graders.

"I'm sorry, Maggie, but growing up means giving up the things you love.
Marge Simpson, The Simpsons

"I don't wanna grow up! I want cookies! And milkie! I want a sweater with love in the stitches! I wanna wear diadeys! I wanna ride in my wagon! I wanna cuddle-wuddle with Mr. Stuffykins! I wanna rocky-rock on my seahorsey! And I want kissy-kissy on MY boo-boo!"

Zero's conscience: Did you fuck?
Zerocalcare: No.
Zero's conscience: Wow. Amazing job. You are black belt in life-dodging. Fifth dan.

"Then, suddenly again, Christopher Robin, who was still looking at the world with his chin in his hands, called out "Pooh!"
"Yes?" said Pooh.
"When I'm — when — Pooh!"
"Yes, Christopher Robin?"
"I'm not going to do Nothing any more."
"Never again?"
"Well, not so much. They don't let you."

"Life's gonna suck when you grow up, when you grow up, when you grow up,
Life's gonna suck when you grow up; it sucks pretty bad right now.
(Hey, if you know the words, sing along!)
You're gonna have to mow the lawn, do the dishes, make your bed,
You're gonna have to go to school until you're seventeen.
(It's gonna seem about three times as long as that.)
You might have to go to war, shoot a gun, kill a nun,
You might have to go to war when you get out of school.
(Hey, cheer up kids, it gets even worse!)
You're gonna have to deal with stress, deal with stress, deal with stress,
You're gonna be a giant mess when you get back from the war.
Santa Claus does not exist and there's no Easter Bunny,
You'll find out when you grow up that Big Bird isn't funny...
(funny, funnyyy......AH HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH ehhh...)
"Life's gonna suck when you grow up, when you grow up, when you grow up,
Life's gonna suck when you grow up; it sucks pretty bad right now.
You might end up smoking crack, on your back, face the fact:
You're gonna end up hooked on smack and then you're gonna die.
(fake trumpet solo) And then you're gonna DI-I-I-I-I-I-IE HA HO!"
Denis Leary, Life's Gonna Suck, from the CD Lock 'N' Load

"Is it for this I uttered prayers,
and sobbed and cursed and kicked the stairs;
That now, domestic as a plate,
I should retire by half-past eight?"
Edna St. Vincent Millay, "Grown-Up"

"Adulthood is hell."

Even if I look back (In the forgotten photo album)
I can't go back to those times (Photos of myself doing stupid things)
anymore (Laughing with friends).
Ultraman, Ultraman Seven!
Where are those guys now?
What are they doing?
The answer is still unclear.
But now I've forgotten all that,
and I'm living each day like I'm being chased by something!
— "Omoide Wa Okkusenman!" (English translation of Japanese lyrics)

"It seems only yesterday I used to believe
there was nothing under my skin but light.
If you cut me I would shine.
But now when I fall upon the sidewalks of life,
I skin my knees. I bleed."
Billy Collins, "On Turning Ten"

"Back in the river valley me and the other kids had dreamed such dreams o how things would be when the Road got all the way ter Where We're Goin, the fine houses an cloaths we'd have there an the food we'd eat. Nowadays all we hoped fer was ter reach the top o them mountins fore we died, an look down inter the lands that laid beyond. But mebbe that was somethin ter do with growin up, too. When you get older you learn to make your dreams littler, cos the little ones don't die so easy."
We Know Where We're Goin, by Phillip Reeve
