Basic Trope: In order to cast a certain spell or use a certain type of magic, the caster must be completely nude.
- Straight: In order to use her magic of Tropomancy, Sorceress Alice must be entirely naked.
- Exaggerated:
- Sex Magic.
- The magic requires multiple casters to work, and all of them must be naked simultaneously.
- Alice must not only be naked, but must also be seen by multiple people while she works the spell.
- Alice must not only be naked, but must also be coated in oil, and jumping rope, and be alongside twelve other women of different nationalities and ethnicities doing the same thing in tandem, because something something strange are the Laws of Magic.
- Downplayed: The magic will work if Alice wears light, loose-fitting clothing or underwear; complete nudity is unnecessary.
- Justified:
- The story spends a lot of time fleshing out the nature of magic in the world, and how clothing interferes with the body's innate magical energy.
- It's established that Alice has other magic available to her, but Tropomancy is the strongest, and she needs its power to defeat a dangerous foe.
- Alice is an exhibitionist, and honestly enjoys Tropomancy because it gives her an excuse to show off.
- Inverted: To use this magic, Alice must be garbed in several layers of clothes at once and be completely covered from head to toe.
- Gender-Inverted: In order to use his magic of Tropomancy, Bob must be entirely naked.
- Subverted:
- Alice wears a locked chastity belt that she does not possess the key to.
- Alice has an intense phobia of nudity, besides bathing or changing clothes.
- Alice is marked with magic tattoos to seal her power, that count as covering.
- Double Subverted:
- Alice has the party rogue pick the lock for her.
- Alice discovers a loophole in her fear, where she can use Tropomancy while bathing.
- Alice discovers there are magical tattoo removal parlors.
- Parodied: Sorceress Alice reads about Tropomancy in a book, and describes it to Wizard Bob as a magic where "there can be nothing between you and nature." She goes on to say that it must be very embarrassing to use in public as a result, and there's many magical organizations that ban it simply because they don't want the bad press. Finally, they meet a situation where Alice has no choice but to use it, and it is revealed that it merely requires the caster to lie face-down directly on some exposed earth.
- Zig-Zagged: Over the course of an episode, Alice struggles with the idea of using Tropomancy. It's powerful, but humiliating; it's versatile, but degrading. At certain points in the episode, Alice disrobes partway to gain some of its power, but never can bring herself to strip completely, to take full advantage. Near the end of the episode, a mighty demon is on the verge of entering the human realm through a portal, and Alice decides that it's now or never. She whips off all of her clothes, and subsequently receives enough power to drive the demon back and seal the portal. Overcome with joy, she turns to the other heroes, the court wizards, and the army that arrived to support them, and throws her arms up and jumps up and down in celebration. She quickly notices that everyone's gazes are moving up and down in time with her jumping, for some reason. Then she looks down and suddenly remembers herself. Cue Naked Freak-Out.
- Averted: The party needs more magic power to win the battle, and Alice hopes that Tropomancy can turn the tide as she begins to unlace her robe. Just in time, the wizard reinforcements arrive, prompting Alice and the female party members to cheer, while the male party members feign joy amidst groans of disappointment.
- Enforced: "We need more Fanservice, but don't want Alice to look like a slut. Hey, I know! Let's make it so she has to be naked in order to use her magic!"
- Lampshaded: "A type of magic where you have to be naked to use it? Alice, that's the craziest thing I've ever heard." (sound of clothes rustling) "Alice, this magic is incredibly powerful, and I think you should use it all the time."
- Invoked: Wizard Bob leaves a book about Tropomancy for Alice to find, and he hopes like mad that she'll pick it up and start seriously studying it.
- Exploited: After a blast of wind magic destroys her robe, Alice figures now is as good a time as any to give Tropomancy a shot.
- Defied: Wizard Bob tells Sorceress Alice she should try Tropomancy, as he's heard good things. Alice slaps him, end of discussion.
- Discussed: "Hey, Alice is about to use Tropomancy! Everyone, gather 'round!"
- Conversed: "So now Alice has to be naked, to use magic. Can they stoop any lower?" "Don't encourage them."
- Implied: A dragon attacks the town, and Alice runs into the town square muttering that she can't believe this is the only magic strong enough, as she fiddles with the laces on her robe. Jump cut to the town celebrating Alice's victory over the dragon with lots of raucous cheering and partying. Alice now stands on a platform in the center of the square, holding a pair of "Town Hero" trophies strategically over her otherwise bare breasts and lower body. She sourly asks if someone could please fetch her robe.
- Deconstructed:
- Alice is banned from using Tropomancy in major urban areas, for reasons of public indecency.
- No wizard guild will allow Alice to join, for fear of tarnishing their reputation.
- Other wizards mock Alice, claiming her magic is solely about sexuality and spectacle over actual magic theory.
- Reconstructed:
- Due to Tropomancy's power, sometimes local government has to make exceptions so Alice can save the day.
- Alice is unbothered and starts her own guild, recruiting beautiful young sorceresses from across the realm and teaching them Tropomancy. For some unknown reason, the guild's fundraising and community outreach events are very popular with men.
- Alice challenges each of these wizards to duels and defeats them with Tropomancy every time. Sorceresses never take it well, but male wizards are always very appreciative of the learning opportunity, which Alice thinks is neat.
- Played for Laughs:
- Every episode, Alice must defeat the latest villain at the end by using Tropomancy, so she always ends up having to strip her clothes. Invariably, this ends up happening in front of a large crowd, such as a market square, a wizard academy, a goblin encampment, or a colosseum of spectators, followed immediately by lots of frantic attempts to cover herself, requisite Naked Freak-Outs, and onlookers jeering or catcalling. Despite the stress this might normally cause, every episode begins anew with no one remembering or discussing the incident from last episode, and Alice seems largely unaffected as the series progresses.
- Alice tells a hall of wizards that she must cast a powerful spell to protect the hall from attack. The spell is an arduous casting and takes all of her energy, so she needs volunteers to magically support her as she casts. No one raises their hands. With a sigh, she admits that the spell will also require her to be naked during the casting. When she asks for volunteers again, all the male wizards' hands shoot up at once.
- An advisor asks his king, why does he always hire Sorceress Alice for royal wizard business when there are more powerful wizards available? The king responds that it's not so much about her power, as it is about her spells. Alice enters the throne room and proclaims she's going to start using her Tropomancy, and we see her undo her robe, causing it to slide to the ground and leaving her completely nude before the king, the advisor, and the guards. All the men's gazes drop a couple of inches, and the advisor admits that Alice certainly does have a pair of large, firm, bouncy spells.
- Alice is also trained in various offshoots of Tropomancy, including but not limited to Motorboatmancy, Gropemancy, Poledancemancy, and Lapdancemancy, and she eschews staves and spellbooks in favor of enchanted tassels, piercings, and six-inch heels (which don't interfere with Tropomancy, for some reason). She insists that she's a classier brand of sorceress, because she won't resort to Sexomancy.
- A barfight breaks out in a tavern and turns ugly, so Alice hops up on the tavern counter, whips off her robe, and begins casting with Tropomancy to break up the various fights and repair all the furniture. As her magic fades and she admires a job well done, she realizes that the tavern patrons have thrown a great quantity of gold pieces at her feet, a bard in the back has begun playing club music, and one of the patrons tossed from the barfight landed with his face smooshed between her breasts. She quickly redresses and flees, briefly doubles back to pocket all the gold pieces, then flees again.
- Played for Drama:
- Despite being able to wield this magic, Alice is understandably not excited to use it in public, and develops emotional issues from the repeated humiliation.
- Users of Tropomancy have a reputation for being immoral and/or lascivious, and Alice has to combat those perceptions while using her magic for the cause of good.
- Alice has a hard time keeping romantic partners for long; despite her attractiveness, lots of men have a difficult time maintaining a feeling of intimacy with her, due to her tendency towards public erotic displays.
- Played for Horror:
- Tropomancy is used to summon eldritch horrors that blanket the world in madness and oblivion.
