Welcome to the Babyls Crime Family!note

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun if: Episode of Mafia (魔入りました!入間くん if: Episode of 魔フィア; Mairimashita! Iruma-kun if: Episode of Mafia) is a Spin-Off of Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun. While starting off as a poll by Iruma-kun creator Osamu Nishi on what kind of scenario fans would like the cast to be in, the mafia art by Nishi proved to be extremely popular, culminating in becoming an official spin-off. The manga began serialization in Bessatsu Shōnen Champion magazine on September 9, 2023, and is written and drawn by hiromono, based on the original concept by Nishi with several character profiles written by her.

Iruma Suzuki is a homeless boy who goes about his life helping others and feed those in need. However, he encounters an injured old man and nurses him back to health. To Iruma's surprise, this is no ordinary old man. He is Don Sullivan, the head of the Babyls Crime Family. After Iruma's one act of kindness, he decides the adopt the five year old as his grandson.

Nine years later, Don Sullivan decides to retire and chooses to have Iruma become the new Don. Will Iruma be up to the task as the new head of the Babyls Crime Family?

Episode of Mafia contains examples of:

  • A Child Shall Lead Them: A mafia example. Sullivan fully intends to retire as The Don and have Iruma take his place despite being only 14 years old in the Time Skip of the first chapter. Kalego deconstructs this, since to him, Iruma isn't mature enough to handle personal dealings the family has to go through. Iruma is actually aware of the responsibilities as The Don, and knows he'll have to get his hands dirty.
  • Adaptational Angst Downgrade: In the original, Iruma has several emotional hang-ups, and a victim of Parental Neglect. When his soul was sold by his parents, he starts the series trying to survive and not stand out to finding a goal in life, but manages to befriend several demons. In this series, Iruma is a well-adjusted kid with no parents in the picture, and was raised to be the member of the mafia by Sullivan.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Clara's relationship with her family in the main manga is nothing short of positive and loving, with her mother even organizing a party and a spiffy dance number to cheer her daughter up when she sees Clara depressed. In Episode of Mafia, Nishi's character profiles mention that Clara's family had to sell her due to financial troubles reluctantly, which can be seen in chapter 6 when her family are about to tear up.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Because this is a spin-off taking place in the human world, several characters have their backstories changed to set the mood of the setting. For instance, some of Iruma's friends originally came from the slums, Clara was a circus performer, Azz and Sabro are cops, and Ameri is his Childhood Friend whom she hasn't seen in nine years since his adoption.
  • Adaptational Jerkass:
    • Opera is a lot meaner than his demon counterpart. His introduction sees him strangling one of Sullivan's goons with his legs. Except for Iruma, he's rude to everyone and especially to Kalego.
    • In the main manga, Kalego is a strict, but otherwise fair teacher and loyal to Babyls and Sullivan, even if he does complain about his superior's antics. Here, his loyalty is a facade to hide the fact that he's a greedy man who embezzling Babyls' funds. Keep in mind, Kalego himself is in charge of their finances.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Downplayed. In the main manga, Iruma's family handed their son to Sullivan as part of the deal they made with him, though the deal ultimately works out in both Sullivan and Iruma's favors since Sullivan wanted a grandson and Iruma genuinely comes to like living in the Demon World. Here, Sullivan willingly adopts Iruma of his own accord, both because he wants a grandson like his demon counterpart and also because Iruma saved his life.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Well, more like Hero Antagonist. In this spin-off, Azz Asmodeus is an undercover cop who intends to bring down the Babyls mafia.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Given the overhauled backstories since everyone is human, this was bound to happen.
    • Unlike in the main manga where Opera is loyal to Sullivan and willingly participates in his antics, Opera is initially on hostile terms with him. Sullivan was even in the midst of torturing him when he brought Iruma to Babyls HQ. While Opera is just as loyal to Iruma as he is in the main manga (albeit after being touched by Iruma's kindness), Sullivan had to intimidate him into joining his crime family.
    • In the main manga, Kalego is terrified of Opera and would rather not deal with him at all if he can help it due to Opera having teased and bullied him relentlessly when they were students. Opera, on their end, really likes to screw with him. Here, neither of them can stand each other.
    • In the original manga, Ameri and Iruma met each other by Crash-Into Hello and she suspected he was human until they began to spend time with each other and start to develop feelings for one another. In Nishi's character profiles, they're Childhood Friends in the slums, and she began to look for him when he suddenly went missing. This is justified because according to some kids in the slums, some of the other kids have gone missing as a result when Iruma was being adopted.
    • Azz starts off as being antagonistic toward Iruma when he believes the latter upstaged him during freshman orientation, though he'd later become an ardent follower and close friend alongside Clara. Here, Azz's supposed friendship with Iruma is a pretense to bring down the Babyls mafia since he's a cop in this story.
  • Adaptation Species Change: In this continuity, all the demon characters in the original Iruma-kun series are now human.
  • Age Lift: In the original manga, Opera and Kalego were nearly the same age when they went to Babyls. In this series, Kalego is older than Opera who was a teenager when they met Iruma.
  • All-Loving Hero: Iruma as always. When two kids from the slums make trouble in a restaurant Kalego, Opera, and Iruma himself are visiting and cause trouble, both Kalego and Opera are about to beat the punks into a pulp. Iruma stops them as they remind him of how he used to be before Sullivan adopted him.
  • All There in the Manual: As of this writing, main manga author Nishi released character profiles of certain characters in Episode of Mafia, including characters that have yet to debut in the spin-off proper such as Ameri and Clara. Included in these profiles are details of their backstories, such as Ameri being childhood friends with Iruma and Clara having been sold by her family due to financial troubles.
  • Alternate Continuity: Of Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun where the entire cast are entirely human instead of demons beside Iruma himself.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Like their demon counterpart, Opera's gender isn't clarified. In a brief omake sequence, Iruma mentions how everyone in the mafia wants to know if they are a man or a woman. Opera doesn't give him a concrete answer.
  • Ambiguously Evil: Chapter 6 implies that Maemaro is part of a secret organization similar to the Six Fingers like how his original counterpart is part of Baal's Six Fingers organization. However, he's been nothing but helpful, and doesn't hinder Iruma in any way. When the Wonder Brothers ringleader had enough of Iruma, he tries to get Maemoro to attack him, but Maemoro quits, forcing the Ringleader to fend for himself. It's implied that Maemoro was touched by Iruma's kindness, and decided to get the hell out of dodge at the first opportunity.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Sullivan nearly quotes this when he offers to take in Opera and Iruma. Opera of course refuses, but Sullivan makes a point that Opera attacked his men, and to compensate for it, they'll have to work under Iruma.
  • Anime Hair: Unlike the original series where the demons' horns form parts of their hair, the cast in this series has their hair styled in a way in reminiscent of their demon counterparts' horns.
  • Anti-Villain:
    • Azz is a cop and joins Babyls undercover to bring down the organization from within. He himself begins to bond the young boss, which conflicts his idea of justice.
    • Ameri is on the same boat. She also wants to bring down Babyls when she found out Iruma went missing for nine years, unaware that he was adopted by Don Sullivan and became The Don. But she isn't aware that he's the mafia leader by choice.
  • Arc Number: Just like in the original manga, any digits with the number 6. This includes Babyls having members up to 6,666 people working in the organization.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me:
    • The reason Iruma was adopted by Sullivan is because he nursed him back to health. Opera becomes his adopted sibling because he was also nice to him.
    • It's implied that Maemaro feels this way towards Iruma when he found out the Wonder Brothers ringleader was a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing, and intentionally made the circus performers to do stunts that would've killed them. Iruma buys the abandoned amusement park the circus is performing on, and poaches the entire circus to work in the amusement park. Maemaro decides to ditch the Wonder Bros ringleader, forcing him to face Babyls on his own, and no one is working for him.
  • Benevolent Boss: Like in the original manga, Iruma is nice to everyone. It gets to the point that he can memorize 6,666 of his henchmen and henchwomen working under him. Camu-Camu even notices that he's putting his men above himself while they're having a meeting. In chapter 6, Iruma buys an abandoned amusement park and staffed the Wonder Brothers performers after find out out they were performing death-defying stunts out of fear. Because of this, Iruma poaches the entire circus so they can work in a safer environment, Clara included.
  • Big Eater: Even in this continuity, Iruma has a bottomless stomach that lets him eat large quantities of food.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Ambiguous Gender aside, Opera is also adopted into the Babyls crime family (with some prodding from Sullivan), and so is very protective of Iruma. Even threats to him will not be tolerated.
  • Bloodier and Gorier: While certainly not much gorier, the series is more violent and has a body count compared to the original.
  • The Cameo: Multiple characters from the main story have made silent cameos in the story.
    • Chapter 2 has Baraki and Eiko as reporters at the media event announcing that Iruma will take over the Babyls crime family. Purson possibly makes a cameo at the bar Iruma, Opera, and Kalego visit at one point in the chapter. You don't see his face, but he is clearly standing by himself and is wearing a hoodie with a trumpet emblazoned on its back, Purson's instrument of choice. And being unnoticed is Purson's specialty.
    • At the end of chapter 3, you can see what is almost certainly Gaap feeding Agares steamed buns on a balcony above where Iruma and his crew are feasting.
    • During chapter 8, you can see what is likely Jazz and his brother hanging out in Amerie's slums.
  • Cheerful Child: Despite growing up in the slums at five years old, Iruma doesn't lose his cheerfulness.
  • Coat Cape: Iruma wears his blazer like this after he becomes a young boss.
  • Conveniently an Orphan: Unlike his main counterpart, Iruma doesn't know who his parents are, let alone where. This allows Sullivan to adopt him to be his grandson.
  • Crash-Into Hello: In chapter 8, Iruma meets Amerie for the first time in years this way. The end of the chapter reveals that Amerie deliberately set their reunion to happen this way with a diagram and everything. Indeed, you can actually see Amerie checking her hair in a broken window on her side of the corner as Iruma comes walking from the opposite direction.
  • Darker and Edgier: Somewhat. Aside from Iruma who is his same old All-Loving Hero self, every cast member who has appeared has been a darker version of themself from the manga. Opera is much ruder and willing to pick a fight, Kalego is a money grubber who plans to eventually steal as much as he can from Sullivan and then bail, and Alice is a Knight Templar double agent who is currently feigning loyalty to Iruma. Clara is largely herself, but her backstory is more tragic as she has been separated from her family for years and essentially been enslaved by a shifty ringmaster for a circus where she has performed, hoping that she'll be reunited with her family in vain until Iruma came along. And while Ameri is just as noble as she is in the original, she has an almost yandere love for Iruma, having loved him ever since they were children and rather aggressively letting him know upon their reunion years later that she considers him a princess in distress who she, the knight in shining armor, will save from Babil.
  • Date Peepers: After Iruma reunites with Ameri, she suddenly declares that she's on a date with him, and told Iruma and her groups to stay a few feet away from them. Both sides are equally flabbergasted while Ameri goes on her "date" with Iruma.
  • Deadly Dodging: In an omake, Iruma, Kalego and Opera are being chased by two thugs, and while Opera jumps on their car to surprise them, Iruma sees a kitten on the road, and swerves to avoid it. It results in killing the thugs and they ended up falling into the ocean, and their car explodes.
  • The Don: Sullivan is the head of the Babyls family. However he soon retires afterwards and has Iruma become the new Don at 14 years old.
  • Doting Parent: Just like the original, Sully is a very doting grandfather to Iruma.
  • Embarrassing First Name: Subverted. Azz still goes by Alice in this manga, but he doesn't feel embarrassment from it unlike his demon counterpart who really hates his first name because his mother gave him that name, but only uses it out of respect to someone who interests him.
  • False Friend: It's clear from the first chapter that some of the kids from the slums were using Iruma for free food despite the fact that he's giving them food out of kindness.
  • Fatal Flaw: Kalego points out to Iruma that he can't be too nice to everyone, and it will become his undoing since he's the new don.
  • Foil: Iruma has a huge contrast to his mainline counterpart. The original Iruma had a personal baggage and has his soul sold to Sullivan but the latter decides to adopt him as his grandson, and tried to avoid drawing attention to himself and is just trying to survive in his new world until he managed to adapt. Mafia Iruma was just a Cheerful Child who just wanted to live his life until he saved Don Sullivan. And just like his demon counterpart, Sullivan adopts Iruma as his grandson, and even made him the new Don. Original Iruma has Parental Issues with his biological parents while Mafia Iruma doesn't know who his parents are. They even have a different kind of relationship with Ameri. In the original manga, Iruma encountered Ameri by random chance and accidentally bumps into her, and their relationship with each other began to bloom the more Iruma spends time with her. Iruma and Ameri were Childhood Friends, and they haven't seen each other for nine years, but the manga will eventually reunite them.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Although a member of law enforcement, Azz has a reputation for handling some of the most demanding, if not questionable cases thrown their way. Azz justifies taking on these assignments as his dedication toward bringing "justice".
  • Good Is Not Soft:
    • Iruma may be the nicest guy you want to be friends with, but remember that he is raised and taught how to be The Don at 5 years old, meaning he would not mind having a body count even if it means the defense of his friends, family, and allies. Kalego is even the one who taught him how to use weapons when he was being his teacher.
    • Babyls may be Neighbourhood-Friendly Gangsters, but they will not hesitate to kill anyone who's a danger to the family, or trying to do whatever they want without their permission. During a flashback in chapter 4, Sullivan has someone killed, and Iruma knows what it means to be part of the mafia, and Kalego has two men killed because they were doing whatever they wanted without permission.
  • Happily Adopted: Just like his original counterpart, Iruma is adopted into Sullivan's household, and enjoys his life with him.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: One of Kalego's main criticisms against Iruma and why he intended to leave the family. In his view, Iruma is too young and naive to lead Babyls, and his kindness will only serve to make the mafia look weak and encourage others to take advantage of them. It doesn't help that Iruma has no real concept of money.
  • I Owe You My Life: One reason Sullivan adopted Iruma was that the latter saved his life while he was gravely injured. That the five-year-old personally tended to his injuries endeared the old man to him and promptly repaid Iruma's kindness by raising him as his own.
  • I Will Find You: According to the character profiles by Osamu Nishi, Ameri was Iruma's Childhood Friend and was looking for him when he suddenly disappeared from the slums. She is unaware that Iruma was adopted by Don Sullivan, and it would be until nine years when they would actually meet.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: In chapter 3.5, Iruma sees a cat near a cliff while being chased by thugs. He uses his foot to swerve their car to avoid the car to avoid hitting it.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While Kalego is being callous about it, he isn't wrong when he points out to Iruma that his kindness will affect people's perception of him and the Babyls crime syndicate as a whole to the point people will feel they can take advantage of said kindness.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite pointing out Iruma's shortcomings and being a dick, Kalego still cares about Iruma in his own way.
  • Made a Slave: Iruma is shocked to learn that Clara was sold to the circus because her family has financial problems. And when he was having a phone call from Sullivan, he overhears the head of the Wonder Brothers' circus having no intention of finding her family and plans to pawn her off to a client. And if they get bored of her, he could just sell her. This prompts Iruma into buying her freedom.
  • Masculine Girl Feminine Guy: Though a romance hasn't started between them yet, Iruma and Ameri fall into this dynamic. And Ameri doesn't want it any other way, comparing them to the fantasy romances she used to read to Iruma when they were children. In her mind, Iruma is the captured princess and Ameri is the knight in shining armor who will save "her".
  • Mentor in Sour Armor: Kalego definitely applies. Despite coming off as an Anti-Mentor, he taught Iruma everything he needs to know in the mafia life, which included how to use weapons, and will actually go out of his way to save him if he ever gets in trouble. Despite his irate feelings towards Sullivan, he's firmly loyal, if not stern about it.
  • Money Fetish: Kalego loves money above all else. It's no surprise since he's Babyls' Treasurer.
  • Missed Him by That Much: An ending preview shows Ameri beating up a guy with her fist against the cracked wall while Kalego drives by and Iruma in full-view. Considering this is a continuity where Iruma and Ameri and Childhood Friends, Iruma will reunite with her eventually.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Kalego's mainline crow familiar form is used as a mascot in the series, and it was based on a drawing Iruma drew of him as a child. Like his mainline self, he isn't happy when Opera forcibly shoves him from the second floor and into the suit.
    • Just like in the original manga, Iruma accidentally German Suplexes Azz when they first meet. In the original, he had no intention to fight Azz, but in this context, he was trying to save Azz from getting killed by Opera.
    • Though they knew each other as children before Iruma was adopted by the Babil crime family, when Iruma and Ameri meet for the first time at present day, they Crash-Into Hello just like they did in the original. The only difference being that Ameri deliberately engineered it to happen to sweep Iruma off his feet.
  • Neighbourhood-Friendly Gangsters: The Babyls Crime family is one of these, and gets even friendlier thanks to Iruma's influence. Iruma even manages to form an alliance with Camu-Camu whom he saves him from assassination while they are trying to have a meeting.
  • Not in Front of the Kid: The manga reminds us that Babyls is still a crime family, and if they're gonna kill someone, they will kill them. For this reason, Sullivan keeps Iruma away from things he doesn't want the five-year-old to see despite his understanding of what a Mafia lifestyle would involve.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: A gust of wind ends up blowing Iruma's hat off as they enter the main hall of Babyls HQ. Opera goes to retrieve it off a chandelier, only to wind up destroying it in the process. Kalego proceeds to inform Iruma and Opera that the chandelier costs millions and demands that they collect enough money to cover the damage. Within a day.
  • Police Are Useless: Clara tried to find her family through local and national authorities, but no luck. Azz notices this too, since Clara tried to get through proper channels to get to her family, but they either ignore or half-assed her request.
  • Reformed, but Not Tamed: Opera becomes Iruma's adopted sibling despite trying to hold him prisoner when they first meet. They're still a wildcard despite being adopted siblings, but they are firmly on Iruma's side.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: In Chapter 2, Kalego decides to leave Babyls because he refuses to accept Iruma as the new head of the family, using the chandelier Opera broke trying to get Iruma's hat as justificationnote  to retire, even giving Iruma an unreasonable time limit of one day to gather enough money to pay for the damages. He only stays on because Iruma proves that while he is struggling to prove himself, he is making the effort to become a proper successor for Sullivan, and he does succeed in collecting enough money to pay for the damages while also pulling off an incredible PR stunt that bolsters Babyls' image.
  • Stern Teacher: Kalego is Iruma's teacher since childhood, and despite being irritated that Iruma lacks the concept and value of money, he nonetheless cares about him in his own standoffish way.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Opera and Kalego do not like each other at all. Even when they are defending Iruma while he has important business. Even thugs from other criminal families think they're having a falling out.
  • Time Skip: The first half of the first chapter has Iruma as a 5 year old child. The rest of the chapter and onwards takes place 9 years later where Iruma becomes the new Don at 15 years old.
  • Where the Hell Is Springfield?: The series doesn't clarify where the characters live in. As far as we know, the currency isn't based on Japanese yen or US dollars, the Babyls mansion is a few miles from the slums, and some parts of the nearby town is a couple miles away.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: Like in the original manga, Iruma accidentally pulls a German Suplex on Azz, but this is to save him from being killed by Opera while he's hiring him.
