** When Ameri describes the contest that will decide who takes over the slums, she describes an old way of settling conflicts that involved guns and explosives. She then goes on to explain that in more modern times, real guns have been exchanged for paint shooting guns for a more civilized contest. An frustrated Iruma realizes that the new method is literally just paintball. This is a callback to the dodgeball arc in the original story where a method of settling conflicts had a similar story of going from being very violent and destructive to something much less lethal, to which Iruma realizes they are just describing dodgeball. He even has the exact same expression in both stories.

* DarkerAndEdgier: Somewhat. Aside from Iruma who is his same old AllLovingHero self, every cast member who has appeared has been a darker version of themself from the manga. Opera is much ruder and willing to pick a fight, Kalego is a money grubber who plans to eventually steal as much as he can from Sullivan and then bail, and Alice is a KnightTemplar [[spoiler:double agent who is currently feigning loyalty to Iruma]].

Clara is largely herself, but her backstory is more tragic as she has been separated from her family for years and essentially been enslaved by a shifty ringmaster for a circus where she has performed, hoping that she'll be reunited with her family in vain until Iruma came along. And while Ameri is just as noble as she is in the original, she has an almost {{yandere}} love for Iruma, having loved him ever since they were children and rather aggressively letting him know upon their reunion years later that she considers him a princess in distress who she, the knight in shining armor, will save from Babil.

Added DiffLines:

* MasculineGirlFeminineGuy: Though a romance hasn't started between them yet, Iruma and Ameri fall into this dynamic. And Ameri doesn't want it any other way, comparing them to the fantasy romances she used to read to Iruma when they were children. * AdaptationalNiceGuy: Downplayed. In the main manga, Sullivan was given Iruma by his parents as part of a contract. The contract ultimately worked in Sullivan's favor as he confesses to Iruma he's always wanted a grandson, so the Suzukis practically gave him what he always wanted.
