The Supreme Ruler is Back!

It was in the year 2800 of the Midgard calendar. Back then, there was an Overlord who once reigned supreme and had reached the very brink of subduing the world. Her name was Lufas Maphaahl, a great woman dreaded as the Black-Winged Overlord. She was too strong, too fast, and too beautiful. However, she was defeated by Heroes who opposed her ferocity, and her ambition was brought to an end.

Or so went the story of our protagonist’s in-game character, whose body he now possesses for some reason in a world 200 years after Lufas' downfall. Follow our protagonist as he becomes unnecessarily feared by his surroundings and unnecessarily worshiped by his former subordinates as he―or now she―cheerfully travels around this fantasy world.

A Wild Last Boss Appeared! (野生のラスボスが現れた！Yasei no Rasu Bosu ga Arawareta!) is a Light Novel and web novel series, which was published from 2016 to 2019 for nine volumes.

In July 2020, an English version of the first volume was released licensed by J-Novel Club.

A Wild Last Boss Appeared! has examples of:

• The Ace:
  • Lufas. Taking aside the fact that she's a level 1000 player in a world where one of the most famous heroic figures is level 120 at most, she was once the top-ranked player of Exgate Online which the new world is based on. In fact, she was so much of an ace that she eventually became the first player to actually conquer the entire map of Midgard. A feat that eventually resulted in her being nicknamed by other players as "A Wild Last Boss" and also becoming semi-canonical within the game's lore itself.
  • The Demon King outright states that Lufas used to be even stronger before she was sealed away, indicating that even as powerful she is currently, Lufas is capable of so much more.
• All of the Other Reindeer: Lufas' memories show she was discriminated by the other Flügels for being born with black wings. Hence why when she took over the world she treated all other races as equal under her rule. This is also the reason why Lufas decides to not give Virgo a golden apple to powerlevel her; while it would help her to quickly become stronger, it would also make it very likely that Virgo's descendants would be born with mixed-color wings, or even black ones like Lufas' own.
• Ambiguous Situation:
  • It's not quite clear if Lufas' world is an entirely distinct one in its own right that influenced the protagonist and the game or if the background details of the game and taking things to their logical conclusions caused it to become more complex than the protagonist thinks it should be. Basically, what really happened with, say, Aries' recruitment? Did Lufas Maphaahl find a legendary but weak sheep monster and teach it to stand up for itself before adopting it or did a random Japanese teenager find a rare spawn monster that just sat around looking dopey until he started taming it, causing it to ineffectually attack him once before submitting?
  • Exactly what happened to the soul of Lufas' creator? Is he merely sharing the body with the soul of Lufas? Are they merging or overlapping? Is he in danger of disappearing into Lufas? Are his memories and feelings actually his own or are they mere fabrications so that a clueless persona will control the body and fool Alovenus into underestimating Lufas?
• Badass Crew: Lufas' followers are quickly becoming this with every Heavenly Star that joins them.
• Battle Butler: Algokeros' (the Capricorn) human form looks like a butler, and he's just as deadly as the other Heavenly Stars. However, in practice Libra and Dina fill this trope better, with Libra acting as Lufas' bodyguard and caretaker most of the time and Dina eventually proving herself to actually be stronger than most of the Heavenly Stars, all while attending to Lufas' needs in other ways than Libra does.
• Beach Episode: One of the afterstory chapters has the cast invited by Pisces to the beach. The twist is though, that while all of the male cast, except Aries and Sei, shows up, none of the females do, much to the guys' (and a random tentacle monster's) disappointment.
• The Beastmaster:
  • Lufas has the Beast Taming skill, and that allowed her to tame monsters into her subordinates. Though rare and unique boss monsters have low chance of being tamed, Lufas was lucky enough to have tamed enough of those to become her generals, the Supreme Ruler's Twelve Heavenly Stars.
  • In general, Flügel are well-suited to this class because of their racial "Coercion" skill, which allows them to intimidate and subjugate foes that are at most half their own level.
  • The Demon King himself possesses an elite force of powerful magical beasts completely loyal to him alone. However, they get routed by the Gemini Argonauti.
• Black Eyes of Crazy: Demons have black sclerae, and they serve as antagonists. However, contrary to the trope name, demons are completely capable of thinking calmly and rationally. In fact, the only demon shown to be as unhinged as the trope implies, Mars of the Seven Luminaries, is regarded as an idiot and a nuisance by everyone, even his own nominal comrades.
• Bring My Brown Pants: After a lengthy chase which already drives him into Villainous Breakdown, Jupiter finally pees himself when Libra is about to blast him into oblivion with her infamous Brachium unless he surrendered.
• Cap: The highest Character Level possible is level 1000. This is an artificial limitation set by the goddess Alovenus, to ensure no one becomes powerful enough to break the world. Lufas and Benetnash were able to break through the goddess's restrictions and surpass that limit.
• Canon Immigrant: In-Universe. The MMO of Exgate online had a function that allowed players to basically write their own stories in-game. Lufas' popularity made the game executives turn her into a semi-canonical character, with her rule of the world and later defeat be included in the in-game story.
• The Corruptible: The 12 Heavenly Stars took the defeat of their master 200 years ago extremely badly. Among them, Aries was eventually convinced and manipulated by the demonic general Mars of the Seven Luminaries to destroy the remaining living Heroes, starting with Megrez. Agoikeros and Scorpius, the other two Stars who joined the demons, sought revenge on their own and so joined willingly, with Agoikeros treating it as a mutually-beneficial agreement and Scorpius wholeheartedly supporting genocide of the humanoids. This forces the recently awakened Lufas to set them all straight.
• Crippling Overspecialization:
  • Aries' main weapons are his Flames of Mesarthim, which are a Percent Damage Attack. Although he can use them in a variety of ways, their intended use is to do damage over time through contact with the flames. In a world where the vast majority of potential foes have comparatively negligible health, his trump card is barely more than a glorified fire spell most of the time.
  • Libra's Brachium is an incredibly deadly Fixed Damage Attack which unavoidably deals 99 999 damage to everything targeted and trapped within its radius. Although there aren't that many cases in the present, anything with 100 000 HP or higher will unquestionably survive Brachium. Additionally, Libra can only use it once every 24 hours, so Libra can potentially find herself without her greatest asset at a critical juncture if she misuses it.
  • Karkinos' only offensive skill, Acubens, is a Counterattack. Granted, it's a very powerful counter as it adds the damage he takes to it, but without Acubens Karkinos can only use normal attacks to fight, and as a Mighty Glacier, Karkinos is far and away the slowest and least maneuverable of the Twelve Stars. If the party is on the offensive, Karkinos effectively has no role to play. He often finds himself either with nothing to do or being used as a glorified meatshield instead of being the guardian he is meant to be.
  • Pollux's main ability is to create temporary bodies for the souls of fallen warriors, allowing them to unleash their full might even beyond the grave. However, Pollux herself completely lacks any form of ability for battle. She has her stats, but no offensive, defensive or support skills of any kind. She doesn't even have the capability of commanding the spirits she summons. Her twin, Castor, is the one with battle ability and is also capable of leading the spirits she summons as a commander—his own battle ability is actually inferior to his ability to command. As a result, the Gemini Stars are at their best when Pollux is protected at all costs, allowing her to create and maintain an army for Castor to lead into battle.
  • Dina is level 1000 and has insanely high magical stats, high enough to leave even members of the Seven Heroes at their prime in the dust, multiple elemental affinities and a slew of unique and powerful abilities. The problem? Their HP and physical abilities are low and they're bad at handling melee fighters, so if someone is capable of outmaneuvering them, they stand a very good chance of subduing Dina even through the magical onslaught that they can bring to bear.
• Curb-Stomp Battle:
  • Because of her high level of 1000, Lufas can basically plow through almost anything the world throws at her. To put it bluntly, opponents below level 1000 cannot hope to win at all, and even if the foe is level 1000, unless they have overwhelming stats, Lufas will still demolish them because her stats are massively boosted above the normal cap thanks to extensive stat grinding.
  • Lufas finds herself on the wrong end of one of these when she fights Benetnasch, the only one of the Seven Heroes who retains her full might. At one point it gets so bad that Lufas cannot even perceive how she's being pummeled, only that she is. This state of affairs lasts until the real Lufas awakens temporarily, reversing the entire Curb-Stomp Battle several times over.
  • The Original Lufas apparently made a habit of regularly dishing these out, to the point that being utterly crushed by Lufas or just the potential to be is part of the motivations of several characters, including Aigokeros, Benetnasch, Leon and even the Demon King.
• Curse: Apparently the Demon King Orm inflicted this to the members of the Seven Heroes who fought and lost to him, cutting their levels, skills and stats in half. The curse also affected them physically by taking some important body part from them: Megrez lost use of his legs and is confined to a wheelchair, Merak lost a wing and the ability to fly, Mizar lost his arms and so on. The only one who escaped this fate was Benetnasch, who simply did not go to fight the Demon King with the others.
• Defeat Means Friendship:
  • After being ousted and realizing she can't defeat Lufas, Venus/Dina genuinely joins Lufas as her advisor
  • Most of the Twelve Heavenly Stars are unique bosses and/or event monsters and individuals who became Lufas' subordinates after she subjugated them, swearing their Undying Loyalty in nearly every case. In the case of Libra, she was created from a drop from a unique event boss which is functionally the boss itself, so it works out to the same. Aries is an exception as there was no battle—Aries joined Lufas on his own after she showed him kindness and empathized with his weakness. Leon is another: he deeply resents and hates Lufas for the humiliating defeat she gave him.
  • Out of the Seven Heroes who once accompanied Lufas, Benetnasch didn't join out of any sense of responsibility or morality; she joined because Lufas effortlessly defeated her and agreed to grant Benetnasch a rematch if she helped Lufas unify the world. Benetnasch later admits that she did have a good time with the group, however, and her relationship with Lufas, while complicated, is probably the one with the most mutual understanding between them.
• The Dreaded:
  • Lufas. Her subordinates aside, everyone - including humans, elves, orcs, demons and angels fear her so much to the point her appearance is still easily recognized even 200 years after her defeat. Back during the times of her rule, even the Demon King Efreet wasn't all too thrilled with the prospect of fighting her and the Heroes, and bid his time until after the Heroes betrayed her and broke apart.
  • The Twelve Heavenly Stars themselves, the famed generals who served directly under Lufas, are regarded the same as natural disasters who can each on their own level a nation on a whim. The only ones among the demons who could hope to fight them are the Demon King, his son and Venus; so it's probably to their relief that most of them are missing, uninterested in helping the world that betrayed their master, or even working with the demons to eradicate the humanoids.
  • Benetnasch just happened to plop herself right in the middle of the land connecting the demon homeland to the rest of the continent and built her nation there. Anyone who ventures too close is unilaterally eradicated; sheer terror of Benetnasch stops the demons from fielding their armies. Simply by being there, Benetnasch has prevented the demons from encroaching any further on humanoid territory, even if unintentionally. The only reason they can still move about and perform any big operations is because the Demon King and Venus can use X-Gate to open portals for them.
• Dude Looks Like a Lady: Thanks to the suggestion of Lufas' teammate Mizaal, Aries' human form looks like a beautiful girl despite being classified as a male. This isn't helped at all by Aries being made to wear lose clothes that are practically dresses, which further obfuscates his gender.
• Dwindling Party:
  • Of the original Seven Heroes, only three remain alive after 200 years, all of them being members of long-lived races (Elf, Flügel and Vampire). This number drops to two after Benetnasch dies fighting Lufas.
  • In a way, a fourth Hero survived to the present: the core of the Dwarf nation Blutgang is a golem storing Mizar's personality, memories and knowledge, so while he's no longer capable of fighting, travelling or creating anything on his own, he's still capable of communicating and sharing information.
• Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: Everyone has an associated element, which has strengths and weaknesses among the other elements. Water > Fire > Metal > Wind is an explicit example of the powers, but as this resembles the classic Chinese elements it's also presumably more complex with additions like wind strengthening fire.
• Fantastic Racism
  • Flügels (who are believed to be descended from angels) tend to look down on those with multicolored wings, seeing pure white wings as superior. Lufas (who has black wings) abolished that caste system when she took over the world.
  • Orcs and beastkin are actually the same thing, or rather orcs are pig type beastkin. This means they should qualify as humanoids just like humans and elves. However, their unique reproductive needs keep them from being accepted by the humanoid races and are instead treated as monsters or magical beasts.
  • In fact, beastkin and magical beasts are the same thing too. The reason why "beastkin" are considered such, and thus part of the humanoids, is because they resemble humanoids (ie, they walk on two legs , possess two arms and one head). Any beastkin who lacks this resemblance, even if they are intelligent beings with emotions, dreams and desires and fully capable of communication and reason, is treated as a magical beast, and thus, a monster. The only race among these "demi-humans" with any degree of acceptance are the centaurs and only from the elves, who are fellow forest dwellers.
• Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: In chapter 44 of the manga, Lufas is facing a human noble named Delby Speth. During her beating of him, Delby's backstory starts appearing, stating he was an orphan found on the steps of the church. He was bullied by the other orphans for being weak and magicless. Then he discovers he is the son of a noble who was kidnapped, but noble society bullied him still for being an orphan for a time. He decided then to become someone who had power and couldn't be hurt. Lufas stops his explanation with a short declarative sentence of, "I don't care." Lufas then states having a pitiful past doesn't excuse all the evil the man has done since then, and being a noble means obligations to those subordinate to his position, which this noble has ignored.
• Furry Reminder: Ruphas has to keep Aries from eating grass in his human form and muses about the odd mental image of Aigokeros, seemingly a dandy looking older man, munching on dandelions, which are his favorite food. They are a sheep and a goat, after all.
• Good Wings, Evil Wings:
  • Lufas may have pitch-black wings that are scorned by the other Flügels, but she's rather kind and caring towards her followers. In-Universe his creator was fully aware of this trope, as he thought the black wings which goes against the society's norm was cool when designing Lufas.
  • In reality, the black wings show that some ancestor of Lufas' ate the forbidden fruit and consumed pure mana, which is said to taint the body. Black-winged Flügel possess the same inherent ability as the original Flügel before they were punished by Alovenus: the ability to control and gather mana, meaning that Lufas is a Flügel who can use arcane magic (which is supposed to be impossible) as well as create the golden apple herself.
• Graceful Loser: Both Lufas and her creator (more justified in his case) don't have any ill will for the heroes for defeating her, and both are content with exploring the world in relative peace.
• Greater-Scope Villain: Demon King Orm believes the Goddess Alovenus, who created Midgard, is playing a Cosmic Chess Game with him and Lufas.
• Grew Beyond Their Programming: Dina is the current avatar of the goddess Alovenus. She is effectively a clone of Alovenus who, while possessing a free will of her own, was in many ways just an extension of her intended to perceive and manipulate the finer details of the world. But unlike Alovenus, who is too big to particularly care about a few random mortals, Dina developed sympathy for the parents she abandoned, and under Lufas's guidance, started to develop her own separate identity.
• Happily Adopted: The Flügel Virgo who was adopted by the human Parthenos.
• In the Hood: Lufas wears one at the beginning of the story to hide her wings and face from those that might remember her. Megrez later gives her a concealing item that hides her wings and outfit. However, she's forced to don the full-body cloak whenever she expects to encounter individuals who could potentially remember her face (which are chiefly members of the long-lived races like elves, vampires and flügel).
• Implacable Woman: Once Libra has you in her sight, there is nowhere you can hide from, as Jupiter found out.
• Living Prop: What Dina basically was in the game, and that's how Lufas and the Stars remember her. Which was very convenient for Venus to impersonate as.
• Man, I Feel Like a Woman: Subverted. When Lufas' creator finds himself in her body, he feels the temptation of testing her... equipment, he chooses not to since she's his beloved creation.
• Megaton Punch: Lufas doesn't wield weapons and this is how she usually defeats her opponents. Or destroys a giant meteor conjured by Venus.
• More than Mind Control: It's indicated that the goddess is the one who manipulated Lufas' teammates and general public perception into turning against her. Rather than controlling them outright, however, she manipulated their feelings of inferiority, rivalry and fear. Afterwards, people seemed to snap out of it and wonder what the hell they were doing at such an important time.
• Narm: In-Universe. Lufas' creator thought naming her subordinates' the Twelve Heavenly Stars as a bit cheesy and something of an Old Shame.
• New Life in Another World Bonus: The main character is brought into the world of Exgate Online as his female avatar Lufas Maphaahl. As he was Level 1000 when this happened, this basically means that Lufas is one of the strongest creatures in existence.
• Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Or heroes in this case. 200 years after Lufas' defeat and the world is in a worse state than during Lufas' rule, making the surviving heroes regret having done the deed in the first place.
• No Name Given: Lufas' creator name and face aren't known.
• Our Ghosts Are Different: After dying as a human, Parthenos of the Twelve Heavenly Stars lingered within Vanaheimr and even recreated her appearance when she was young.
• Permadeath: In "Exgate Online", level 1000 players like Lufas were a pretty common sight. However, once she arrives in the world of Midgard, she quickly finds out that the currently strongest warrior of the land is at level 120. Demanding why it's so low, Dina points out that it was her generation that was full of abnormalities. Soon afterwards Lufas is able to piece together that thanks to the fact that it was just a game, people like herself could level up without worry and with ease even if they die. To the people of Midgard however, the consequences of permanently dying prevented anyone from rising up in levels quickly.
• Persecution Flip: Lufas, despite being gorgeous by human standards, is considered horribly ugly by Flügels because they judge beauty by how close wings are to being pure white. When she was growing up the other children constantly threw rocks at her and her father would beat her if she fought back.
• Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Aries may have the human form the size of a little girl, but he's still a level 800 with strength that surpasses anything else in the world barring the other Heavenly Stars, his master Lufas, the Demon King Orm and another player, Dina.
• Purple Prose: "Lufas" cannot speak in anything other than a baroque, distant way, a limitation which erodes her player's previous identity. Her ability to act "out of character" is similarly limited.
• Really 700 Years Old: Elves and Flügels are known to live for centuries and barely age. Lufas herself is lore-wise 400 years old, but looks like a woman in her twenties.
• The Reveal:
  • Not only is Dina actually Venus of the Seven Luminaries, she's also a level 1000 player just like Lufas, albeit not as well-developed as Lufas is. Specifically she was a test player checking out new features to be implemented into a new patch and then suddenly found herself in the real world of the game. As she's a half-elf, she has a long lifespan and spent the last 200 years looking to defeat the Demon Lord, even infiltrating the demons' forces for a chance.
  • The protagonist never replaced Lufas, the protagonist is Lufas, and has been all along^note Dina, by now outed as being the Avatar of the Goddess Alovenus, was actually the Thirteenth member of the Tyrannical Heavenly Stars and allied with Lufas around the time the Twelve were being gathered. The two hatched out a convoluted plan to stall out Alovenus' own machinations: Lufas voluntarily splitting off a portion of her soul for Dina to create an Avatar for her, which Dina interfered in Lufas' defeat/sealing to send it to Earth hundreds of years into the future. Dina then followed and created X-Gate Online, manipulating the game's story so that this unaware Avatar would be drawn into playing it and become familiar with the world. Being in a completely ordinary, unmagical world, meant the Avatar would completely escape Alovenus' attention. Back in Midgard two hundred years later, the Hero Summoning ritual was effectively hijacked to allow Dina to reconstitute Lufas and her split-off Avatar, which was then resummoned wholesale back into Midgard, albeit with a few memories shaken around to keep Alovenus from becoming suspicious and/or instantly flying into a panic, buying enough time for Lufas to pull her forces together and regain her memories..
• Robot Maid: Libra is a golem in the shape of a maid.
• Scissors Cuts Rock: Normally a water elemental like Megrez' Leviathan would have an advantage over a fire elemental like Aries, but the difference in level is so much Aries can almost evaporate Leviathan out of existence.
• Shout-Out: The title and most of the chapter titles are references to Pokémon.
• Storm of Blades: While she lacks hand-held weapons, Lufas can summon one of these as long-ranged attacks.
• Summon Everyman Hero: This is what the Kingdom was trying to do, only they ended up releasing Lufas instead. They succeed at the end of the second volume.
• Too Awesome to Use: Played for laughs. Elixirs are a legendary medicine and one Sei recognizes from games as extremely rare but something you never end up using because you can get by without it and don't want to waste it. That's fine. The joke is that the original Lufas did the exact same thing. As in, really stockpiled legendary treasure medicines just like she was playing a video game.
• Undying Loyalty: Lufas' followers have this even two centuries after her sealing.
• Vindicated by History: In-Universe. According to Dina, Lufas' rule is more fondly remembered 200 years after her defeat, since the world was united under a single ruler.
• Winged Humanoid: Flügels are descendants of true angels, which gives them a rather inflated view of themselves.
• World's Strongest Woman: Again, Lufas. She's so strong that, in addition to conquering the entire world, even the Demon King himself (the actual final boss of Exgate Online) feared her so much that he made a point to avoid conflict when possible. When they finally do meet during the story, he notes that Lufas as she is right now is actually weaker compared to how she was before she was sealed away.
• You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Venus kills Mars once his plan of using Aries fails, and to ensure he doesn't exposes her.
