  • Abraxas: In Canon, Ghidorah’s heads were named Ichi, Ni and San by the production crew and were never called such In-Universe. In this fic, it’s revealed in Chapter 2 that Vivienne Graham gave the heads those names while she was monitoring Outpost 32. Only San answers to his nickname, while Ichi and Ni are primarily referred to as Eldest Brother and Elder Brother respectively. San and Vivienne as Monster X have collectively and individually gained a couple other nicknames in the story.

  • Everyday Craziness in Pontypandy: Gabriella usually goes by Gabby, and her full first name is rarely used.
  • Fate of the Clans: The characters were only referred to by these nicknames once.

  • The Pieces Lie Where They Fell: The sequel Picking up the Pieces names the lieutenant of the Magi-of-Stars Guard as Lunar Light, and his in-universe nickname, used mainly by his captain, is "Weird Beard". The Luna Guard's Captain Sweet Surprise finds it both accurate and amusing.

  • In Say It Thrice, Betelgeuse calls his Morality Pet "Lyds" and "Babes." He also calls Danny "Danny boy," and sometimes calls Juno "June-bug."
  • These are all over the place in Skyhold Academy Yearbook, mostly courtesy of Varric. In addition to the nicknames which transferred from the canon, he calls the President of Ferelden "President Kingy" and his wife "the Queen Mother." Staff newcomer Evvy Trevelyan is "Siren," while Michel de Chevin is "Champion" and Evvy's old friend Mahanon is "Lockpick." Meanwhile, courtesy of Cole, Evvy is also "the rainbow."
    • The three original character students who appear most frequently call themselves "the Partners in Crime," a nickname which is also adopted by their teachers. • There are several in the Hunger Games fic Some Semblance of Meaning: Kit is called "Kitty" and occasionally "Kitty Cat" or "Kitty Kitty" by Vale and Lavinia, while Kit refers to Obsidian Citrine as "Citrus." Vale's sister Laurel is the first to refer to Obsidian as "Sid"; Vale eventually begins to do it as well (instead of referring to him as "He-Who-Is-Ridiculously-Named"). Also, Vale is occasionally referred to by Sid as "sparkle girl," and Damon refers to her as "the girl who wore stars on her heart," which she likes.

    • The Awkward Adventures of Meghan Whimblesby begins with ordinary Meghan. Her friends were fans and gave her the Elvish name "Melethriel". When Meghan falls into Middle-earth and becomes an elf, she switches her names, so Melethriel is her name and "Meghan" is her nickname. Almost everyone calls her Meghan, but Gandalf calls her Melethriel.
    • In The Games of the Gods, Rachel and Kari fall into Middle-earth, become elves, and take Elvish names. Rachel becomes Elenlómë and Kari becomes Alkarisil. In the cover story, "Rachel" and "Kari" are nicknames. The truth is that "Rachel" and "Kari" are their names from Australia, and Rachel invented the Elvish names. Rachel prefers to be "Rachel", but "Kari" becomes Alkarisil to all but a few friends.
    • In Lothíriel by JunoMagic, the hobbits shorten Lothíriel to "Lothy", and Lothíriel herself shortens Míriel to "Míri" and Meluir to "Mel".
    • In Time Will Tell, the elves sometimes give Elvish names to humans. Jorryn becomes Mistadiel "straying daughter". Denuwyn, a girl of Rohan, becomes Merilnan "flower of the valley".
  • In the Twice Upon an Age series, Varric is still The Nicknamer, dubbing the Inquisitors "Hunter" and "Eyebrows". He also, in his role as the story's editor, dubs the author "Scholar" - a nickname which has actually been made canon by Mary Kirby, Varric's real-life writer.
  • In A Voice Among the Strangers, Jessica earns three of these before she manages to communicate her real name to the Equestrians: Ebony dubs her "Legend", in reference to some legends of creatures that gave emotions (their food) freely to Changelings, just as Jessica had done to her. Meanwhile, Rarity dubs her "Mystery" and later "Luna's Melody" in an attempt to dissuade ponies from calling her "Foal-Hunter."
  • In Weasley Girl, Harry Potter and his friends get the collective nickname "Potter's Gang." It's coined by Snape, who means it as an insult, but it's picked up by the students, the narrative and eventually the gang themselves (though Hermione initially protests that they're not Harry's gang, thank you very much). Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle get the collective nickname "The Trolls," which is admittedly mostly used by Potter's Gang.
  • In What About Witch Queen?, Weselton and Arendelle soldiers call each other "Weasels" and "merchies" respectively.
  • What Might Have Been:
    • Everyone calls Jasper "Buffy."
    • A while after more and more pearls joined the Crystal Gems, Pearl earns the nickname "Renegade" to properly distinguish her from them. Pearly (Rose's first Pearl) calls her "White", implying that she was White Diamond's original pearl.
    • Rose's first pearl is referred to as "Pearly."
  • In Where the Truth Lies (Animorphs), the Animorphs have come to be known as the Shape Shifters, and civilians call Yeerks "brain slugs".
  • In The Witch of the Everfree, Pinkie starts calling Sunset "the Pony of Shadows" after her Big Entrance to Applejack's birthday party. Sunset eventually rejects the name after her Vision Quest.
  • In Your Human And You, the Coming Dawn guard refers to Max as "The Anomaly".
  • Mastermind: Rise of Anarchy:
    • Two separate nicknames are noted in the opening of Chapter 7, during a news broadcast discussing the societal impact of Mastermind's Villain career:
    • Amongst the growing wave of vigilantes, one particularly violent vigilante is referred to as "King", mainly for the sake of having something to call them.
  • Hamato Clan Kunoichi: Much like her husband, Tang Shen goes by her own nickname, her's being "Sliver."
