"Ask not what others can do for you, but what you can do for others."

Sonic Chaos is a fanfiction by sleepfiction. It is a complete rewrite of Sonic canon, using elements from all parts of Sonic lore, presented as an episodic Series Fic.

Set in an alternate universe where Sonic and his friends are creations of the late Dr. Julian Robotnik, Sonic uses his powers of super-speed to stop threats to the world alongside friends Tails, Amy Rose, and later Knuckles — threats that include Julian's roboticist son Ivo, who blames Sonic for his father's death.

The first three fics follow the plotlines of Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Sonic Adventure, and Sonic Adventure 2.

Sonic Chaos contains examples of:

  • Action Girl: Most female main characters are action-oriented. Amy and Rouge are the most commonly occurring examples, with Amy's psychic powers, large hammer, and fighting prowess; and Rouge's cunning smarts, stealthy ways, super strong kicks, and her wings allowing her to fly. Other female main female characters like Vanilla, Blaze, Marine and Tiara are also their own versions of badass: Vanilla being a brilliant scientist turned CEO turned mayoral candidate, while still being a supportive and kind mother; Blaze, a smart yet cold princess with elemental fire powers; and while Marine is still a tween, she's a skilled sailor and has some water powers.
  • Actor Allusion: Many minor characters have names that reference current or past voice actors the Sonic series — most notable being Lovable Jocks and part-time Chao sitters, Roger and Craig.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: The chapter 'Genesis' explores a time before the start of the main story. The origins of "Mobians" are quite different from the original source material and additionally gives background to all of the main cast (except Knuckles) and many recurring characters, such as Rouge, Vanilla, and Vector. Many characters — those that are Mobians, that is — are the results of experiments done by Dr. Julian Robotnik, Ivo Robotnik's father. Roughly eighteen years before the start of the main story, Aleena — Sonic's mother — and a few others broke out of the facility they were made in. In doing so, Aleena destroyed Julian's arm; Ivo had to make his father a robotic prosthetic arm. Julian, bent on revenge, dedicated his life to killing Aleena. Fifteen years later, he succeeded. However, after doing so, he was killed by the cockpit of the mech he was controlling, due to it not being able to contain Sonic's power. This incident led to Ivo also dedicating his life to destroying Sonic, blaming him for the incident. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Quite a few chapters focus on supporting characters rather than the main characters of Sonic, Tails, Amy and Knuckles.
    • The Chaotix have the most, with currently three chapters to their names. These often read like short mystery novels — fitting for the detective agency. Sonic barely appears in these chapters, instead choosing to follow Vector, Espio, and Charmy.
    • Blaze has two for now; the first introducing her alongside her rival Bernadette Quark, the second revealing Silver's true backstory and introducing a new character from the Sol Dimension: Tiara Boebowski, a character originally made for the unreleased Sonic X-Treme, who was never utilized in the source material. Sonic Chaos makes her the lady-in-waiting of Blaze, turned against her former best friend.
  • Ascended Extra: Rouge gets a downplayed example of this, being mentioned only in a flashback via 'Genesis' yet becoming a supporting character in Sonic Chaos & Knuckles, and from there becoming a main character in Sonic Chaos: Rivals. Justified, considering how the source material only introduced her in Sonic Adventure 2, which Rivals is based on. Cream could also be considered a downplayed example, becoming much more of an Action Girl than her original self, but is still a child.
  • Canon Foreigner: While most characters are from the source material, a few Recurring Characters are created for the purpose of this story, such as pilot Renzo Nanatsuki and his partner Lee, Thomas Pen/Giga Thomas and Desdemona Tobikoshi, Vickie Park — owner of Casinopolis — and her son Titus, and Kendrick Velox, Mayor of Station Square.
  • Composite Character: Blaze is actually Elise Agni III, princess of Soleanna, guardian of the Sol Emeralds. Blaze is just an alias, but while her royal title and name are of the princess from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), her personality, role as guardian of the Sol Emeralds, and dimension of origin are the same as the original Blaze. The "original" Elise still exists in the Chaos Zone, but has no bearing on the plot and is considered "bizarre" by Blaze. Additionally, Fang apparently once had a romantic dinner with her, in which she wouldn't stop talking about "''that one play where those two kids kill each other because they’re so in love''". In particular, she was very interested in the part where Romeo kisses Juliet's supposed corpse, a definite allusion to her canon counterpart's most infamous scene]].
  • Computer Voice: Metal Sonic/Neo Metal Sonic is often shown to have this when acting more robot-like. In the first season, he switches between this and mimicking Sonic’s voice (usually to display how his personality core is becoming more and more unstable; acting like the source Metal with a robotic tone and like Sonic with the… well, Sonic tone) but as Neo Metal Sonic, his voice usually seamlessly transitions between the two due to his personality cores fusing.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Rouge and Blaze. Rouge was initially cold and distant to Team Sonic due to feeling like she didn't fit in at the compound — so she took it out on Amy, who, as Aleena's assistant, fit in most of all. Blaze was also cold and overly independent at first, not wanting to lose another friend after Silver. This of course led to her distancing herself from her remaining friends, Marine and Tiara.
  • invoked Fake Australian: An unusual case, considering it’s a written work. Characters such as Marine, Fang, and Dingo all speak with a stereotypical (broad) Australian accent, and use Australian phrases like “what a beaut”, “blimey”, and “mate”; all phrases that are in varying use in Australia. However, they are written in a way that often makes them sound like American actors putting on Australian accents; other times sounding like they speak Cockney English. Somewhat justified since that’s how they speak in the source material.
  • Hardboiled Detective: Often invoked by Vector, who aspires to be one. However, he's too soft-hearted to be a true one. Additionally, while the Chaotix agency's headquarters are also his small apartment (the main room, a small kitchen area, and a bathroom), the start of "Chaotix and the Newtrogic High Island" has Espio and him worrying over the power bill, and he can't afford to even pay Espio;his mother owns the apartment building the agency is in, so he never has to worry about being kicked out due to rent.
  • Kick Chick: Rouge, much like in the source material. Justified, since in Sonic Chaos, her wings are attached to her arms, resembling a real bat.
  • The Leader: Due to the large amount of in-universe teams and groups, quite a lot of characters fall into this trope.
    • Sonic, fittingly, acts as this to Team Sonic in a bit of a downplayed example; he's somewhere between the Headstrong and the Charismatic types, being determined to save Station Square, but also The Face, being the most recognised member and actually getting brand deals out of his fame.
    • Amy also plays this to Team Rose, once again downplayed, as the most experienced member of the team, but has herself noted that Cream has natural leadership skills. While Sonic was arrested by GUN, Amy also took on a more leader-like role for the rescue team.
    • Fang is the leader of the Hooligans, without a doubt; falling into the Mastermind type, coordinating Bark and Bean's weaknesses and strengths to make a cunning group of mercenaries. While the other examples may rarely be referred to as the leaders of their respective groups — even in the narration — Fang always refers to himself as the leader, and is rather irritated when Bark and Bean, along with Sleet — who takes on the leadership role — and Dingo, form a "new" Hooligans without him.
    • Vector considers himself the lead detective of the Chaotix, as the eldest and most experienced member.
  • Mad Scientist: Quite a few of the Robotniks, it seems. Ivo is a talented roboticist but puts all his skills towards destroying Sonic. Julian was a biologist who mutated the Mobians, but kept a grudge against Aleena for a decade and a half, and the only reason he stopped was because he died. Gerald so far is saner than his descendants, but has begun to show shades of this, and if how he is in the source material is anything to go by, then he definitely falls under this trope.
  • Mythology Gag: Constantly. At least once a chapter.
    • Rouge's knife has the inscription, Fated, Not to be Tamed, a clear reference to her theme Fly in the Freedom from Sonic Adventure 2.
    • Silver's ever-popular catchphrase from his boss battle in Sonic '06, "It's no use!", is often used when describing his unrelenting psychic powers.
    • Vector mentions his mother wanting him to be a piano player. His original concept from back in the classic days was part of Sonic's band — as the keyboard player.
  • Patchwork Fic: Sonic Chaos takes characters, plot lines, and lore from all parts of Sonic canons — from the recent IDW comics to Sonic Boom to the DiC shows, there’s at least a reference. A particularly good example is the main residents of Angel Island: Moss, a wise Sloth from the Archie comics; Sticks the Badger, from the Sonic Boom continuity; Ray and Mighty (sometimes called Nature or Nat), from the arcade game and more recently Sonic Mania; and finally Knuckles the Echidna, a main character of all sorts of Sonic-related media.
  • Shout-Out: Not as frequent as mythology gags, but still occasionally happens.
    • Blaze playing a magical flute that can create tears in realities gives the audience a reference to a different video game, Ocarina of Time]].
Putting the instrument to her lips, Blaze played a quick, thirteen-note song, almost like a young elf boy playing a song to save the world or something.
    • There's also a few references to another notable Sonic fanwork, Sonic Destruction, such as a past mayoral candidate being Jason King, and Charmy's full name being Charlemagne Bee.
    • A parody of Sonic Forces in-universe is a movie dramatization of what happened to the main characters in Sonic Chaos & Knuckles, featuring characters that clearly resemble our main cast. The name of Sonic's counterpart? Nazo]].
  • Team Pet: Bud and to a lesser degree, Cheese. Cheese is just a regular Chao in the care of Cream, but Bud is the vessel of the primordial god Chaos.
  • Teen Genius: Tails, just like in canon, is a technological genius and has created all sorts of useful inventions — fries that allow you to see into the future, multiple planes, and a hand cannon, just to list a few. Cream also falls into this trope as a minorly downplayed example — she's been able to fix wires "ever since [she] could talk", knows how to direct A.I. computer systems into simply following directions, and builds some of her own inventions.
  • True Companions: Team Sonic, Team Rose, and Team Chaotix. All members of these groups would do anything for the others.
    • Team Sonic all consider each other best friends, even Knuckles, who joined much later than the founding members, who all knew each other since childhood.
    • Team Rose consists of Cream, Amy, and Big — Amy and Cream see each other as sisters, and Big is Cream's godfather/uncle. They all go to great lengths for one another.
    • Team Chaotix resemble something of an adopted family. The members act like brothers, sometimes fighting and disagreeing with one another, but always working together in the end. It's possible that they will eventually become actual adopted brothers, as Vector's mother Alliana and Espio's father Inco are in a romantic relationship, and Charmy was adopted by Alliana.
