Yang has changed since the Vytal festival

Rogue is a RWBY fanfic by Berserkersarecool. It's been 2 years since the Vytal Festival "Incident" and Yang Xiao long has become a much different woman; a criminal. She has evaded capture for years but now a chance meeting will bring her back into contact with her old team.

The fanfic can read here

The fanfic later got a sequel called WYLD Hunt.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • 100% Heroism Rating: Pyrrha and, to a lesser extent, JNR as the team she came from, as nobody but the Atlas military is aware of Pyrrha's violent tendencies. JNR and RWB also have a grim appreciation for the parallels of their situations leading in completely opposite directions.
  • Action Girl: Yang, her mother and really any woman in RWBY.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Raven's motivations are considerably less selfish than in canon.
  • Badass Family: The Branwen Xiao-Long family is not one to be messed with.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Some of the good guys in AU serves as villains such as Ironwood for example.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: Ironwood and Cinder's Group serves as the main villains driving force for the AU. Notably Ironwood in the AU was willing to frame and let Yang take the fall in order to protect Remnant form Salem no matter the cost. Also included covering up Pyrrha's murders.
  • Blood Knight: Yang like she is in canon though taken to an almost sadistic degree.
    • Pyrrha, or at least the Maiden side of her.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Yang panics when she sees Cinder about to kill Raven and punches her in the face with Ember Celica. Since Cinder's aura was already broken this has the same effect as punching an average non-powered human with a shotgun gauntlet.
  • Break the Cutie: Yang HARD!
    • Ruby and Pyrrha would later suffer this as well.
  • Canon Discontinuity: Yang’s reprimand at the Vytal festival shifts to a full-on arrest after Emerald creates one more illusion.
  • Carnival of Killers: Yang shows up on the news and challenges everyone who wants to fight her to Mountain Glenn. Atlas military squads, Huntsman teams, assorted mercenaries and even the White Fang show up to take her out.
  • Cold Sniper: Ruby when she’s on a mission
  • Cool Sword: Weiss’ Glyph sword and Raven’s Yureru
  • Crapsack World: It’s the same world as RWBY but with a darker outlook on things and more serious consequences.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Yang regularly dishes these out to anyone who encounters her in a bad mood. Including Blake.
    • By the time the story starts one of her favorite pastimes is attending White Fang meetings and fighting everyone attending. Having a reasonable chance at taking her out in a direct fight generally requires an organized team of Huntsmen.
  • The Dark Side Will Make You Forget: Yang’s eating of the Grimm-heart and her forging of her Grimm mask help her forget her past.
  • Death Seeker: Pyrrha. Her... unorthodox transference of the Maiden powers lead to her mind being split between her own self and a jumble of Blood Knight Fall Maiden personalities. She briefly takes back control after Ruby uses her silver eyes and asks to be killed.
    • Yang would later want this after she mistakenly believed she killed Ruby by accident.
  • Didn't Think This Through: This happens several times throughout the AU.
    • For example's Emerald fail to take into account making Yang assault an Atlas Soidler had more consequences and ruin her mistress's plans.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Yang, albeit understandably. She thinks she's been betrayed by her team and joins up with Raven, and eating the Grimm heart certainly doesn't help.
  • Foreshadowing: What happened to Pyrrha is subtly built up throughout the work.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Emerald makes one extra illusion to make Yang attack an Atlas soldier. This leads to effectively the entire AU happening, although some consequences stand out.
    • Since Yang is arrested instead of reprimanded, Beacon is disqualified from the Vytal Festival, which stops Pyrrha from competing, which throws a massive wrench into Cinder's masterstroke and halts the Fall of Beacon and ensures Pyrrha ascends half-way to Maidenhood.
    • Meanwhile, Yang's arrest leads to Raven making contact and helping her escape, which leads to Yang looking for revenge, dismantling Cinder's support network and eventually killing her.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Raven and Yang after eating the Grimm hearts
  • Happily Married: Raven and Tai then Summer and Tai.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: After Yang's arrest and subsequent escape RWB's reputation is completely shot. They're blamed for the fallout of the Vytal Festival including Beacon's disqualification, Atlas' continued military presence in Vale, and the constant Grimm attacks. Only JNR and the Beacon faculty are really still on their side, and the faculty don't help much.
  • Loophole Abuse: Penny uses this to keep helping Ruby while being as unhelpful as possible to Atlas.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Cinder, just like in Canon.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently Professor Port went after Yang some time before the start of the story. No information is given beyond his being surprisingly persistent and Yang eventually ending the chase.
  • No-Sell: Yang takes Sun’s kick to the face without moving an inch.
  • Odd Friendship: Yang and Neo. Neo alternates between flirting with and annoying Yang while Yang tries to avoid both options. Despite this they seem to have a mutual respect for each other.
  • Official Couple: Nora and Ren, Ruby and Penny, Jaune and Pyrrha, Torwick and Neo, and most important of all Yang and Weiss.
  • One Woman Army: Yang takes on large groups of opponents regularly.
  • Punch! Punch! Punch! Uh Oh...: What most people get when fighting Yang, especially Blake.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Ozpin and Ironwood could be said to be this.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Due to a combination of her anger and being part Grimm Yang's eyes are now always red.
    • Notably, when she discovers Ruby shooting her was accidental her eyes briefly turn back to lilac.
  • Sharing a Body: Pyrrha. The unnatural process of her ascent to Maidenhood means that she shares her head with a cacophony of insane Blood Knight Fall Maidens. Her own personality almost never manifests completely, being drowned out by the rest.
    • Emerald does... something to Mercury before Raven kills her. It seems like Mercury now has a mental copy of Emerald in his head, complete with semblance. They get along considerably better than Pyrrha and the Maidens.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Yang isn’t singularly targeted but she does have a type. Specifically girls who have similarities to Weiss.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Everyone says Yang looks like Raven but Raven says she looks like Taiyang.
  • Team Mom: Ruby often operates as the team Mom along with Weiss.
  • Unfriendly Fire: Yang gets this accidentally from Ruby.
  • Unstoppable Rage:
    • Yang’s go-to reaction whenever Weiss is mentioned or she’s reminded of the Vytal festival.
    • Raven goes into this when she finds out that Yang has been thrown in prison.
  • White Mask of Doom: Yang and Raven both wear Grimm masks. forged after eating Grimm hearts.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: Yang's distraction in Mountain Glenn. Having challenged pretty much everyone to come fight her and not necessarily knowing who to expect she makes plans to take them out on the fly. This mostly involves playing on their weaknesses, filling one building with traps and emptying another, and getting Neo in the mix to confuse people even more.
