Odd Squad vs. The Laser Chickens is an Odd Squad fanfic written by Raquellaanna.

During a long and arduous battle with a laser chicken, Olympia gets hit in the head by a laser beam and goes unconscious. Upon waking up, Dr. O and the other agents are horrified to learn that she has lost her memory. However, when Dr. O gives her some medicine in an effort to restore her memory, it doesn't work as intended, and Olympia instead adopts a new identity based on a book she's penning: Odd Odysseus, a villainess who is in charge of all odd villain communications. Although this helps out agents greatly in solving cases, other villains soon get wind of Olympia's new abilities and kidnap her, leading Oprah, Otis, Obfusco and Oona to try and save her.

Too bad Otis in particular is Locked Out of the Loop and doesn't know the truth about what his partner is up to...

Serves as the first book in the Odd Squad V.S. trilogy, alongside Odd Squad vs. The Robot Princesses and Odd Squad vs. Todd: The Final Showdown.

This fanfic contains examples of:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Fladam is misnamed "Flatam" in this story.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Downplayed. Odd Todd and the three main villains that accompany him out of the ten that he has — Fladam, Symmetric Al and Mr. Lightning — are villains in the original series, and although Odd Todd in particular was a Big Bad, he was still comedic at some points. In this fanfic, the four villains are far more violent, going so far as to physically hurt Otis as they tie him up and gag him, and denying him basic human needs such as food and water. Odd Todd in particular also drops Olympia into the Arctic where she develops hypothermia and is nearing death.
  • Adaptation Deviation: Although it's not made clear whether the story is meant to be part of canon or not, it does change some things about characters and elements.
    • Odd Todd is depicted as a villain despite "Mid-Day in the Garden of Good and Odd" having him make a Heel–Face Return and depicting him as an Anti-Hero, although he still does take up gardening.
    • Headquarters is implied to be aboveground, when it was shown to be underground in canon (apart from "Villains In Need Are Villains Indeed", which had it be aboveground as a Series Continuity Error).
    • Odd Todd plants cameras all around Headquarters in order to spy on Precinct 13579, which doesn't seem to make much sense considering Oprah has at least one security camera in Headquarters.
  • Afraid of Needles: If Chapter 3 is any indication, Otis isn't too fond of needles, as he winces when he sees doctors sticking a needle into Olympia's inner elbow to take blood.
  • Amnesiac Villain Joins the Heroes: Played with, then subverted. Olympia was firmly on Odd Squad's side prior to developing Identity Amnesia. Although she's a villainess following her awakening from her coma and antagonizes Odd Squad, she's still helping agents inadvertently by letting them know where villains are going to strike next. This all goes out the window when she's revealed that she's faking her amnesia.
  • Anything but That!: Double subverted. Oprah tells Otis that she knows who can break into Olympia's box that holds her book. He begs her not to send him to Baby Genius, but she tells him that she's not — she's sending him to Obfusco instead.
  • Artistic License – Geography: Otis falls into a giant crater situated in the middle of a mountain, lands flat on his back, and manages to survive without so much as a scratch. This may be justified, however, since Odd Squad is a World of Weirdness where geographical rules in Real Life don't apply.
  • Badass in Distress: In Olympia's story, Odd Odysseus was planning on capturing Olive and Otto and holding them hostage so she could negotiate her way into Precinct 13579's Headquarters, with the only way of freeing them being to give the villainess her own Odd Squad office. When Oprah and Otis read this, they come to the realization that kidnapping the two co-Directors isn't needed since Olympia is already in Headquarters.
  • Batman Gambit: Olympia, as Odd Odysseus, attaches a bomb to a duck, knowing that Otis's greatest fear is ducks. He still manages to defuse it anyway by throwing the duck at a rampaging Hydraclops.
  • Bits of Me Keep Passing Out: The laser chicken first attacks Otis's badge phone, then his hand, causing him to drop the phone and leaving his hand paralyzed and broken. Luckily, the call on his phone went through to Oprah, which in turn makes her call Olympia's phone to find out why Otis hung up on her.
  • Bound and Gagged: Odd Todd, along with Fladam, Symmetric Al and Mr. Lightning, take Otis hostage and tie him up, then gag him using his necktie. To top it off, Symmetric All handcuffs Otis's hands and feet.
  • Braving the Blizzard: Chapter 12 has Otis journeying through Precinct 13579's Arctic Room to find his kidnapped partner. He does a coat and some medicine for Olympia that prevents her from getting a cold or a dangerous fever if they are left out in the cold for too long, but by the time he reaches her, she's on the brink of severe hypothermia.
    • Otto, Dr. O and Oscar are forced to fight through an actual blizzard in Chapter 14, before realizing that they can't beat it and need to make a shelter in the meantime.
  • Catch Your Death of Cold: From two hours' exposure in the Arctic Room, Olympia develops severe hypothermia and is nearing death by the time Otis finds her. This renders the medicine he was given (which helps the user to not develop a cold or a dangerous fever after cold exposure) useless, even more so when he starts to develop hypothermia.
  • Character Narrator: Most of the story is told in the point of view of Otis, but other points of view are seen throughout the story.
    • Chapter 14 is told in Dr. O's point of view.
    • Chapter 15 switches to Otto's point of view, then to that of Dr. O.
    • Chapter 16 switches the point of view to Oprah, then to Oscar.
  • Continuity Nod: Oona calls back to "Back to the Past" in Chapter 6 when she tells Otis that she's never been more sure of anything in her life.
  • Darker and Edgier: Not to the extent where it's a Dark Fic, but the story does contain a lot more violence than anything in the original franchise.
  • Deer in the Headlights: When Otis spots a flock of ducks at the park, he begins running backwards, tripping on a park bench and landing hard enough to get the wind knocked out of him.
  • Destroy the Security Camera: In Chapter 12, Odd Todd destroys every security camera in Precinct 13579's Headquarters.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Absolutely no one was prepared for Olympia getting a serious injury to the head. There's such a lack of preparation, in fact, that an emergency room in Precinct 13579's Headquarters doesn't even exist and the Donut Room has to be used as a substitute, which is quite terrifying considering that Odd Squad is a Dangerous Workplace.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Oprah decides to venture into the Arctic Room wearing nothing but her standard Odd Squad uniform. Five minutes later, she returns and realizes that it's way too cold for her.
Oprah: Maybe it's just a little too chilly out there...
    O'Duffy: Told ya so.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Odd Todd is willing to abuse Otis to hell and back if it means getting respect and control. However, because Otis is about to be stock in a trade, Odd Todd feeds him to make him seem presentable.
  • Evil Versus Evil: Although Olympia believes that she's a villain due to her Identity Amnesia, other villains aren't fooled in the slightest. Odd Todd and ten other villains in particular plot against her to defeat her.
  • Extra Eyes: Odd Squad emperor penguins have three eyes, in contrast to their real-world counterparts which have two eyes.
  • Eye Scream: Odd Todd gives Otis a "goodbye punch" straight to the eye shortly after tightening his necktie that's gagging him. It manages to knock the agent out, and when he comes to, he realizes that he has a black eye.
  • Fake Memories: Dr. O has Olympia drink medicine that will restore the last thing she remembers, which will in turn allow her to regain the rest of her memories. It ends up turning her into a villainess going by the name of Odd Odysseus instead.
  • Faking Amnesia: Chapter 11 reveals that Olympia has been doing this.
  • Fell Asleep Crying: While held hostage by villains and kept in a tiny room with a chair and a single light, in addition to being Bound and Gagged, Otis cries himself to sleep out of fear and pain, and has a nightmare as a result.
  • Finishing Each Other's Sentences: In Chapter 2, Oona meets Otis in Dr. O's office as he frantically tries to find Olympia. Oona is quick to catch on to what he wants.
Otis: Oona, do you know where-
Oona: Olympia is? Hey, not too slow anymore!
    • A more serious example occurs in the beginning of Chapter 11 with Odd Todd.
Oprah: Well, she left at 8 AM, two hours ago. We need to find her before it's too-
Odd Todd: Late? Oh, I think it's too late by now.
  • From Bad to Worse: Otis has had a terrible week, what with his paperwork going missing and having to volunteer at a shelter for ducks. It only gets worse when his partner is severely injured while rescuing him after he becomes a Deer in the Headlights from seeing a flock of ducks.
  • Greater Need Than Mine: When Dr. O treats Otis's hand, he asks her to treat Olympia first since she's more seriously injured than he is. Dr. O cuts him off by telling him that she's a doctor, not a counselor, and explaining that she can't provide medical assistance to Olympia while on the field.
    • He does it again in Chapter 14, where Dr. O finds out that Otis gave the medicine he was given to Olympia, without leaving any for him to spare. As a result, he ends up being in a worse state of hypothermia than she is.
  • Guilt-Induced Nightmare: It's implied that Otis has these in Chapter 3, as just before he goes to sleep, he asks if Olympia getting attacked by a laser chicken was his fault.
  • Hearing Voices: Played for laughs when Olympia returns to Headquarters and speaks to Oprah — she thinks she's hearing Otis's voice in her head, but in reality, Otis is standing in front of her. When she does spot him, she's ecstatic.
  • Here We Go Again!: The story ends with Oprah assigning Olympia and Otis another case, with Otis immediately leaping out of his hospital bed to put his shoes on and go out onto the field.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The plan Odd Odysseus has that Olympia writes in her book, in which she gathers all of the villains together to defeat Odd Squad, is the exact same plan that The Shadow would have one season later.
  • Hostage Situation: Ten villains kidnap Otis and hold him hostage in exchange for Precinct 13579's gadgets, smartwatches, and badge phones, just like in Olympia's story. They take him to a warehouse in the meantime, but Odd Todd threatens to take the agent to a more private location if Oprah tries and stops him.
  • Identity Amnesia: Olympia loses her memory in an altercation with a laser chicken, and as a result, she becomes a villain. When she initially wakes up from her coma, Otis tries to make her recall that the two of them are partners, but to no avail, and Dr. O is forced to feed her liquid medicine that will restore her memories. She ends up becoming the same villainess that is in her book, Odd Odysseus, although it doesn't last for long.
  • I Lied: Subverted. Oprah tells Otis that Odd Todd didn't keep his promise, and that Olympia isn't in Headquarters. However, he did leave her in Headquarters — he just left her in a place that Oprah, Otis and the other agents aren't expected to find.
  • Ill-Timed Sneeze: In Olympia's book, Otis's sneeze ends up giving him and Olympia away to Symmetric Al, as well as ten other villains that he brought with him. The same thing happens in the real world, only with Oprah in place of Olympia and Otis telling her that he's been fighting off a cold and that's why he's sneezing.
  • Impeded Communication: Olympia manages to contact Otis despite being on the brink of hypothermia and trapped in a cave engraved in a mountain, but she gets cut off before telling Otis that she's going to check something.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Downplayed, as it's not as extreme as other examples, but when heading to the Donut Room to see Olympia, Otis comes across Oprah with her face in her hands. When she looks at him, her face is tear-ridden, and she tries to regain her serious composure but completely fails. It doesn't even take her a second after Otis's question of "How's Olympia?" before she breaks down and starts crying again.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Dr. O tells Otis that the attack on Olympia was a fatal one, which makes him freeze with shock as he tries to reassure himself that his partner is fine. Sure enough, Olympia then wakes up from her coma.
  • It's Personal: Odd Todd kidnapping Olympia leads Otis to declare that he now has it personally with him.
  • Kill It with Ice: Odd Todd holds Olympia hostage in Precinct 13579's Arctic Room, where she becomes on the brink of hypothermia, although she's rescued some time later by Otto, Dr. O and Oscar. In the makeshift shelter, Otto, who blacks out when snow collapses, on him, finds out that Odd Todd followed Olympia inside and demanded payback from her, and when she didn't comply due to being too weak to do anything, he attacked her by throwing icicles with metal inside of them, which cut into her arm and made her bleed profusely.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Otis sees Olympia as a younger sister, and as a sort of replacement to his real younger sister, who died four years prior to the story. As such, he's rendered into a state of shock and panic when Olympia gets a concussion and falls into a coma.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: When Otis arrives on the beach, Oscar asks him about the secret weapon (read: another stinky sock) that can defeat the Hydraclops rampaging in the ocean. Otis is unaware that Oprah was supposed to ask him and Olympia to unbury the weapon, and likewise, Oscar doesn't know what's going on back at Precinct 13579's Headquarters currently. The two boys manage to get each other up to speed.
    • Chapter 11 reveals that Otis is locked out of the loop of the entire story, and Olympia catches him up to speed with a note.
  • The Medic: In addition to the Medical department, Security agents like Owen and Ohio can also serve as paramedics, tending to the injured on the field as needed.
  • My God, You Are Serious!: When Olympia asks Otis who he is, he tells her to stop joking around, believing that she's pulling a fast one on him. Another round of "who are you" from her causes him to realize that she's most certainly not kidding.
  • Not the Fall That Kills You…: Averted. Otis manages to fall quite a ways into a giant crater situated in the middle of the mountain, but when he lands flat on his back, all he gets is the wind knocked out of him slightly, with no injuries to speak of.
  • Not So Stoic: Very few things can shake Otis out of his usual serious nature, but two of them are ducks and Olympia getting seriously hurt.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Odd Todd taunts Otis with Olympia's "once a villain, always a villain" philosophy when the latter is captured by the former.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Olympia, who can be girly at times, had her first pink cupcake when she and Otis took a trip to the town bakery together.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Chapter 6 reveals that Olive, Otto and Oscar are well over 200 years old. Oscar cites it as, "Work keeps us young!"
  • Shout-Out: The same shoutout to Doctor Who that was seen in "First Day" plays out in Chapter 3, only with Olympia and not Ocean.
Dr. O: I'm Dr. O. The Doctor here at Odd Squad.
    Olympia: Doctor who?
    Dr. O: [sighs] Wrong doctor.
  • Sickening "Crunch!": Horrifically averted. While Otis is being Bound and Gagged, Odd Todd, Mr. Lightning, Symmetric Al and Fladam manage to break his index finger. The agent doesn't notice his finger bone is broken up until he realizes that he can't move one of his fingers, where he finds the bone sticking out and blood oozing everywhere.
  • Single Tear: Oona sheds one of these when she tells Otis that no one knows of Olympia's current condition. He decides to look for his partner in the Donut Room in response.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye:
    • Olympia pulls this on Dr. O, Oprah and Otis when she leaves the emergency room and races for Oprah's files.
    • Obfusco later pulls this on Oprah and Otis with popping up behind a cafeteria table, which scares the latter.
  • Sticky Situation: Olympia comes across Otis, Oona and Oprah, and fires the Glue-inator gadget at their feet. While Oprah and Oona are left unable to move, Otis jumps out of the way, but quickly pretends that his feet are glued to the floor as well until Olympia leaves.
  • Supreme Chef: While Otis being one of these is canonically true, this story has him making a pineapple upside-down cake on Oprah's head. Needless to say, she wasn't happy.
  • Talking in Your Sleep: Although he doesn't speak, Otis moving about in his sleep is taken as a good sign by the agents that he's alive and will be okay.
  • Tempting Fate: After Otis tells Oprah there aren't any juice boxes left, she groans and asks what else can go wrong. In comes Oona with a "super duper terrible" problem that she asks Oprah for help with, only for her to get a glare that resigns her to fixing the problem herself as she dashes away. This ends up being a bad move on their part, as the problem Oona has is that Olympia has planted a bomb underneath her collection of lucky coins.
  • Time Bomb: Olympia attaches a bomb and places it underneath the only pink table in the back room of the Lab. Even worse for Otis, the bomb is attached to a duck and he has ten minutes to deactivate it before it goes off.
  • Tracking Device: When taken hostage by Odd Todd, Olympia had a tracking device embedded into her badge phone.
  • Useless Security Camera: Averted. Odd Todd places cameras in the Breakroom, the bullpen, Oprah's office, the Creature Room, and the Medical Bay in order to spy on Precinct 13579.
  • Victory by Endurance: Otis and Olympia know that the only way they can beat the multiplying laser chickens is if they dodge their attacks until they run out of steam, which Otis estimates would take about a week. Unfortunately, the problem is that they're multiplying laser chickens, and the two agents are supposed to confront them before a week is up, when there are 32 chickens.
  • Volcano Lair: While not volcanic (it's covered in snow) and not a lair (it's more of a hidden place than anything), Olympia is taken by Odd Todd to a mountain with a crater in the middle of it.
  • Wham Episode: Chapter 11 reveals that Olympia doesn't have Identity Amnesia at all — she let herself get attacked by a laser chicken in order to make Odd Todd see her, and by extension Odd Squad, as weak, since he was planning on attacking Odd Squad. In turn, she made up Odd Odysseus as part of her plan and adopted that identity while supposedly suffering from amnesia.
  • Wham Line: Olympia delivers one in Chapter 11 in her note to Otis.
Olympia: I know that this is a shocking thing to say, but I never lost my memory.
  • Wolverine Claws: One of the abilities that agents have is the ability to produce blades from their nails if they squeeze their hands into tight fists. Otis uses this tactic in order to free himself from his confines after being taken hostage, including his handcuffs.
  • Writer's Block: Midway through Chapter 12, the author stops writing due to writer's block. Subverted in that she doesn't actually have writer's block and was only kidding.
Hey guys huge writer's block I decided to stop writing
    [...]
Jk lol!!! Why would I do that to you guys!??!!? Anyways...
  • invoked Write What You Know: An in-universe example. Olympia was in the process of writing a book about the daily life at Odd Squad prior to her being attacked, and one of the characters she made up was a villainess named Odd Odysseus. When she develops Identity Amnesia, she becomes under the belief that she is Odd Odysseus and begins to wreak havoc for Odd Squad.
  • Wrong Assumption: Otis believes that it's been a full week since he and Olympia battled the laser chickens, so when he gets the wind knocked out of him after tripping on a bench, he doesn't worry too much because they're not much of a threat. It's only when Olympia gets a clear shot to the head that he realizes it hasn't been a full week.
