Mortal Kombat vs. The Owl House is a fanfic by Ordeaux26, the fic is about a Crossover between the Mortal Kombat and The Owl House franchises.

Many years after Shinnok's failed invasion on Earthrealm, Liu Kang and Kitana lead a siege on the Outworld to finally dethrone Shao Kahn once and for all, which ends up going south when suddenly a bunch of ''Mortal Kombat'' participants are teleported to an alternate version of the Netherrealm where chaos inevitably erupts. The bad guys seize their opportunity while everyone tries to figure out how to get out, since all their magic and tech transporters are not working.

The fic can be found here at Archive of Our Own and here at FanFiction.Net.

The fic was completed on March 30th, 2021.

This fanfic supplies examples of:

  • 11th-Hour Superpower: A rare villainous example occurs when the soulando gives Shang Tsung a massive power boost allowing him to easily take down Liu Kang and Luz.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Downplayed with Shang Tsung, since he is about as powerful in terms of magic and skills as he is in canon. What makes him qualify is that we get to see him defeat more opponents than in canon, including some he has canonically lost to like Liu Kang and Shao Kahn, though with In-Universe reasons for both.
    • Sektor is far more powerful than he is in canon, able to beat Hooty who was able to stalemate Quan Chi, Liu Kang, Luz Noceda, Amity Blight, Kitana and Lilith. He is only beaten when Raiden renounces his Elder God status and defeats him.
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • Scorpion is a relatively minor example. Wile he is still mostly the same, he is much more obsessed with revenge, specifically on Quan Chi than his other versions, to the point where he fights Raiden for the chance to kill Quan Chi.
    • Boscha is no saint in canon, but in the fic, she has outright murderous intentions and is willing to team up with Shang Tsung for pretty revenge against Amity for humiliating her at Grugby in her eyes.
  • Action Prologue: The fic starts with a big battle between the forces of Edenia and Outworld, before the Mass Teleportation gets the story started.
  • Advertised Extra: This happens on both sides.
    • Scorpion due to being the mascot of the franchise appears on the MK side of the cover despite not having as big of a role as some of the other MK characters like Liu Kang, Raiden and Kitana.
    • Eda Clawthorne and King appear on the MK side of the cover despite not having as big of a role as even Amity Blight in this fic.
  • Affably Evil: While Scorpion suffers from some Adaptational Villainy in this fic, he only attacks people as part of his quest for revenge or if they get in his way, as well as deciding to spare Sonya and Jax despite them trying to defeat him.
  • All-Powerful Bystander: Despite Raiden's immense power, he is unable to get involved directly due to the Elder Gods' Alien Non-Interference Clause.
  • Always Chaotic Evil: The Netherrealm demons seem to be this, as all of them when they are transported to the boiling isles go around killing and eating anyone they come across.
  • Amplifier Artifact: Shinnok's Amulet is currently held by Quan Chi, which he uses as a powerful weapon to get out of bad situations and torture.
  • Another Dimension: Considering this is a Mortal Kombat fic, this is to be expected. Most notably, in the story, the Demonrealm is just another realm out of the many in the Mortal Kombat universe.
  • Anti-Magic: According to Raiden, the Demonrealm has a magic barrier that prevents any of the heroes and villain’s magic or tech-based realm transporters from working. Though the power, according to Raiden, does not affect Elder Gods. And it shows with even Quan Chi being unable to summon a portal to transport him back to the Netherrealm.
  • Anyone Can Die: The fic does not shy away from killing major characters in both franchises in random chapters when it seems like they would be important, including:
    • The Demon Hunter trio: Two are killed off by Noob before the third is killed off by Scorpion two chapters later.
    • Willow Park Who is killed by Quan Chi in her chapter, which is her first appearance, despite being a major character in The Owl House.
    • Drahmin & Moloch: Who are murdered by Belos in Chapter 10 despite being set up as important recurring villains.
    • Boscha: Who is first set up as Shang Tsung’s partner before being betrayed and killed by Shang Tsung in the middle.
    • Emperor Belos and Shao Kahn: Who are initially set up as the Big Bad Duumvirate of the story before being killed by Shang Tsung, and Shang Tsung and Quan Chi taking over as the true Big Bad Duumvirate. They both are resurrected by Quan Chi though and used as revenants.
    • Sonya Blade: Who is killed by Sektor to make a point to Raiden.
  • Asshole Victim: Every villain who is killed by Shang Tsung during his chapter for his selfish ends qualifies.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At first it looks like Emperor Belos and Shao Kahn are going to team up and serve as the Big Bad Duumvirate. Only for them both to be outmatched and killed by Shang Tsung and Quan Chi and Shang Tsung team up and take over instead.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Quan Chi and Shang Tsung team up and become this at the end, though they both plan to backstab each other in the end.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: Quan Chi, Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn and Emperor Belos all serve as this for most of the story with their own goals and importance to the plot. Though Quan Chi and Shang Tsung end up winning the Ensemble in the end.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Shao Kahn and Emperor Belos are both this, they are the tyrants of their world and end up teaming up to enact their plans together as the Big Bad Duumvirate, but they are both killed by Shang Tsung and he a Quan Chi.
  • Big Good: Raiden qualifies as this due to being the active Elder God in the story.
  • Bittersweet Ending: While the heroes are able to stop Quan Chi and Shang Tsung they both manage to escape unharmed, and while the Mortal Kombat heroes manage to get back home many characters are dead. And Kronika is in the shadows plotting her next move.
  • Call-Back: Has its own page.
  • The Cavalry: When Liu Kang and Luz are beaten by Shang Tsung after his power boost the rest of the heroes show up to help them and take down Shang Tsung.
  • Central Theme: The value of working together.
  • Character Development: The heroes in general from both universes get one initially starting off as having trouble working together. To the point where the Tekunin nearly managed to defeat the heroes so badly, as each of them focused on a single cyborg and not helping each other, that Raiden had to relinquish his Elder God status to save everyone. And when Raiden tried to take on Quan Chi and Shang Tsung on his own he got beaten and brainwashed. It was only when Luz and Liu Kang started working together that they started beating Quan Chi and Shang Tsung’s minions. And only when the rest of the heroes start working together are they able to defeat a powered-up Shang Tsung.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Quan Chi and Shang Tsung both qualify as, as soon as they form their alliance they both immediately plan to backstab each other, and both of them know this and have a backup when the other betrays them. When Shang Tsung gets a massive power boost from the soulnado Quan Chi flees knowing he is about to be betrayed.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Quan Chi when he tortures an Emperor’s Coven member with Shinnok's amulet to get information on the portal out of the realm, and enjoys it while he does.
  • Crossover: The main premise of the fic with the characters from the Mortal Kombat franchise crossing over with The Owl House.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: In Chapter 12 alone, Shang Tsung manages to kill a bunch of people including a large amount of the emperor's coven, beat Kano in a few minutes of fighting him and even Shao Kahn and Belos can barely stand up to him due to all the power he has from his soul-stealing.
  • Cyborg: Both Sektor and Cyrax both are completely cybernetic, though Cyrax does not like it.
  • Dark Fic: A slightly Downplayed example; while the fic would be considered one by the standards of The Owl House, the tone is consistent with the Mortal Kombat franchise, if not slightly less brutal.
  • Dark Is Evil: Noob Saibot is this, completely being one of Quan Chi's minions and completely black.
  • Dehumanization: A few times characters from one universe refer to another character from the other universe as it or monster.
  • Demographic-Dissonant Crossover: Basically, this whole fic is what happens when you mash the ultraviolent and gory Mortal Kombat with The Owl House, a kid-friendly Disney IP.
  • Diabolus ex Machina: Quan Chi pulling out Shinnok's amulet to get out of being nearly killed by Scorpion.
  • Escaped from Hell: Scorpion escaped from the Netherrealm after being trapped there by Quan Chi when the Mass Teleportation of the story happened.
  • Evil Cripple: Shao Kahn due to his fight with Liu Kang in the Prologue he is badly crippled when transported to the Boiling Isles allowing for Shang Tsung to easily take him out.
  • Evil Overlord: Both Shao Kahn and Emperor Belos qualify as much as they both are the rulers of their places and have plans to merge with other realms.
  • Evil Plan: When Quan Chi and Shang Tsung team up they form one, to summon a powerful Soulnado to steal every soul in the Demonrealm, and split it between each other.
  • Evil Sorcerer: Both Quan Chi and Shang Tsung qualify as in canon and are both called sorcerers as well for good measure.
  • Evil Versus Evil: Chapter 12 serves as this for much of it when Shang Tsung fights against the emperor's coven as well as Emperor Belos and Shao Kahn.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Quan Chi and Shang Tsung also speak in a polite tone, even while they are doing the most blatantly evil things and mocking those around them.
  • Flawless Victory: Shang Tsung kills all Belos’s guards at his castle without even getting scratched. He even says the line.
  • From Bad to Worse: In Chapter 11, Shao Kahn and Emperor Belos team up and plan to merge with Earthrealm together, that is bad. Cut to the next chapter Shang Tsung has killed Belos and Shao Kahn teamed up with Quan Chi, have a bunch of villains on their side and plan to summon a massive soulnado to consume the soul of everyone in the Demonrealm.
  • The Ghost: Shinnok is alluded to several times throughout the story, but he never makes an appearance.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Kronika who is revealed to be behind the Mortal Kombat character being transported to The Owl House universe.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Sonya tries to give one to Cyrax after he is enslaved by the tekunin though it does not end up working.
  • I Will Find You: A rare villainous example, with Noob Saibot wanting to find Quan Chi and work for him again which he eventually does in Chapter 9.
  • Intercontinuity Crossover: A mix between this and a Fusion Fic, with the Demonrealm just being another of the many realms in the Mortal Kombat universe in this fic.
  • Just in Time:
    • Liu Kang showing up just before Luz and the Blight Twins are killed by Noob Saibot to fend him off.
    • Cyrax and Raiden showing up to save Sonya and Jax at the last second when Emperor Belos has beaten them with Cyrax trapping Belos in a net and summoning a portal to getaway.
  • Leave No Survivors: What Quan Chi tells Sektor to do during his attack on The Owl House.
  • Love Confession: Amity gives one to Luz at the end of Chapter 16.
  • Mass Teleportation: Every Mortal Kombat character from both Outworld and the Netherrealm is teleported to the boiling isles.
  • Mistaken for Murderer:
    • In Chapter 2, Kitana killed Tim in self-defense, but when Amity arrives at the scene, she thinks she murdered him and tries to attack her.
    • Happens again in Chapter 13 where, when Gus sees Jax carrying Willow's body and thinks he, Raiden and Sonya killed her when they did not.
  • Mythology Gag: Has its own page.
  • Neck Snap: How Quan Chi kills Willow, though he uses magic to do so.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Liu Kang gives one to Shao Kahn in the first chapter to the point where it badly cripples Shao Kahn.
  • "No More Holding Back" Speech: Raiden gives one after he renounces his position of Elder God and gets involved himself along with his "The Reason You Suck" Speech to the Elder Gods.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Multiple characters call out the Elder Gods directly on how inept and useless and terrible they are, like Quan Chi, Sektor and eventually Raiden.
  • Revenge:
    • This is a given when it comes to Scorpion. In the case of the fic, he wants revenge on Quan Chi for tricking him and trapping him in the Netherrealm for years to rot.
    • Boscha also apparently wants some on Amity for in her eyes Amity humiliating her.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After Shang Tsung gets a massive power boost from the soulnado Quan Chi runs away through the portal knowing he is about to be betrayed.
  • Teleport Spam: Many characters can teleport especially on the Mortal Kombat side. But some characters love teleporting all the time, specifically Quan Chi, Noob Saibot and Sektor.
  • Trapped in Another World: This happens to all the Mortal Kombat characters when they are all teleported to the Boling Isles and are unable to leave due to their transporters not working.
  • Villain Episode: There are a few chapters where the focus character is a villain.
    • Noob Saibot of Chapter 4.
    • Scorpion of Chapter 6.
    • Quan Chi of Chapter 10.
    • Emperor Belos of Chapter 11.
    • Shang Tsung of Chapter 12.
    • Sektor of Chapter 14.
  • Villain Team-Up: Shang Tsung and Quan Chi team up in Chapter 12 which also includes Noob Saibot working for Quan Chi and Kano recently pledging his loyalty to Shang Tsung as well as Sektor doing the same two chapters earlier to Quan Chi.
  • Weird Crossover: A kids show like The Owl House crossing over with a violent R-rated video game franchise like Mortal Kombat would qualify as a one.
  • Wham Episode: Chapter 12 especially would qualify as this. Where Shang Tsung goes on a rampage, killing or defeating several people taking the supposed Big Bads and teaming up with Quan Chi with a plan to absorb every soul in the Boiling Isles.
  • Wizarding School: The Hexside School of Magic and Demonics is one, though not active because of the events of the plot it is visited a few times.
  • You Monster!: There have been a few instances where the villains have been called monsters in response to their crimes, Quan Chi for example.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: Shang Tsung as to be expected from him says this before stealing a soul.
