A Fairy Tail story by Kairomaru, a prolific author with many stories in many different fandoms. The story follows a Natsu Dragneel with an alternative backstory.

Can be read here on Fanfiction Dot Net and here on Archive of Our Own.

This fic contains examples of the following tropes, in addition to those already present in the source material:

  • Adapted Out: Heavily implied for E.N.D. When agreeing to perform the Dragon Soul Ritual on Natsu, Igneel said it would burn away everything unnatural about him, including the Demon Seed in him and his connection to the tome Zeref held.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Natsu has formed romantic relationships with Lisanna, Mirajane, Cana, and Erza before the series' canonical beginning, changing the dynamic and events going forward.
    • Natsu gives the four girls necklaces made from the fangs of a Salamander he killed. All four girls in turn begin falling for him soon after meeting him. Lisanna is the first to take the plunge when they find Happy's egg, with Cana being the next due to Erza and Mira being too busy butting heads. Once they bury the hatchet, both join soon after.
    • Before joining the polyamorous relationship, Cana decides that there should be no secrets between family, so she confides in Natsu about Gildarts being her father. Natsu, being Natsu, immediately goes off and confronts the clueless Gildarts, leading to him finding out about Cana years earlier than canon, and repairing their relationship.
    • In canon, Erza and Mirajane hated each other from almost the moment they met, and only reconciled after Lisanna "died", said incident changing Mira basically overnight, and forcing their rivalry to end. Here, with Lisanna's trip to Edolas Adapted Out, Cana was the one who put an end to their rivalry, browbeating them into actually talking with each other. Once they did so, the two managed to see their hatred was unfounded and based more on being stubborn, letting them bury the hatchet and become friendly rivals.
    • Downplayed. Thanks to being more informed by their foster parents before going through the Eclipse Gate, Natsu and Gajeel are more familiar with one another and actually remember each other when they meet again years later. The two of them still don't have the best relationship though, the one time the two met before the present almost resulted in a fight between them, not helped by the two belonging to rival guilds. The girls think it's because of Gajeel's disposition, which is thanks to Phantom Lord encouraging his worst traits, combined with Natsu being protective/territorial of the girls, but Natsu just thinks they don't get along in general.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Igneel of all characters. He is born to Fire Dragon King Ignis and Earth Dragon Queen Terraneel, making him the Magma Dragon King rather than the Fire Dragon King. Consequently, Natsu is then also the Magma Dragon Slayer, but this pales in comparison to him not being quite as simple as he was in canon. He's smarter and an even better fighter, being capable of overcoming both Erza and Mirajane only a couple of years after joining Fairy Tail.
    • Erza and Mirajane of all characters, as they both become Dragon Slayers in addition to their canonical abilities.
    • Cana not only becomes a Dragon Slayer but also learns Crash Magic.
    • In a roundabout way. While explaining Celestial Spirit Magic to Natsu and Happy, Lucy mentions Black keys as being some of the rarest Spirits, but extremely difficult to form a contract with, and that anyone who summons one but fails to form a contract can get severely injured. Canon only had one key that fits this description: Ophiuchus, the Snake Charmer, which was treated as the Sixth Ranger of the Zodiac keys, and belonged to Yukino. Assuming she still has it here, her possessing it is much more impressive since it means she managed to actually make a contract with a Spirit that dangerous.
    • Lucy herself demonstrates the ability Star Arms, a precursor to her canon Star Dress where she wields the weapons of her Zodiac Spirits, during the fight against Everlue. She later becomes the first ever Celestial Dragon Slayer.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change:
    • Unlike in canon, the five Dragon Slayers sent to the future were not "abandoned" by their parental dragons. While Igneel did not tell Natsu that he was being sent to the future and kept him in the dark about some things, neither did he simply vanish into thin air from Natsu's perspective.
    • Igneel's parents performed a Heroic Sacrifice and actually injured Acnologia to the point the Black Dragon in the Book of Apocalypse had to go into hiding. This meant none of the dragons were forced to use the Dragon Soul Technique to recover their powers.
    • Canonically, while Jellal was initially believed to have been faking his behavior when Erza knew him, it was revealed later that Jellal was Brainwashed and Crazy by Ultear for the better part of a decade, changing from a heroic and kind person to a ruthless and twisted monster until he was freed. Here, the retcon is ignored, making the latter his natural personality, the former personality being a front he put on then later discarded once he had control over the Tower of Heaven himself.
  • Adaptational Context Change:
    • In canon, Natsu went to Hargeon because he heard a Fire Mage was there and thought it was his father Igneel. Here, it's because he heard a Salamander was there. This results in Bora being defeated quickly and unceremoniously.
    • Canonically, Ultear joined Grimoire Heart to unseal Zeref. Here, she's The Mole, having joined with the goal of killing Hades.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Gildarts. In addition to showing up in the pre-Canon chapters, he shows up in the middle of the Phantom Lord Arc, long before his canonical introduction set right before the Edolas Arc.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change:
    • The method used to create Dragon Slayers was perfected. Not only was the side effect of excessive use of Dragon Slayer Magic fixed, but the human Dragon Slayers could also share Dragon Slayer Magic with other humans.
    • As part of the fic's premise, Natsu is the Magma Dragon Slayer and Igneel is a Magma Dragon rather than the Fire Dragon Slayer and Fire Dragon respectively. The former is capable of not only using his Magma abilities but is capable of using their components, rock and fire, individually.
    • Lisanna is the first to undergo the Dragon Soul ritual with Natsu, and to cover her offensive weakness she becomes the Fire Dragon Slayer.
    • Cana becomes the first-ever Booze Dragon Slayer when she undergoes the ritual with Natsu. Not only that but because of her earlier relationship with Gildarts, he teaches her his signature Crash Magic.
    • Erza: Erza becomes the Earth Dragon Slayer to Lisanna's Fire, reasoning that it could be used interchangeably for offense and defense.
    • Mirajane: Becomes the Forest Dragon Slayer, reasoning it would give her defensive abilities outside of Satan Soul and could provide some utility through healing.
  • Adapted Out: Lisanna's perceived death and trip to Edolas are absent here, Lisanna instead becoming an Ascended Extra after her Relationship Upgrade with Natsu.
  • Anti-Climax: Once Erza and Mirajane bury the hatchet, it looks like they're immediately going back to butting heads when Natsu reveals the Dragon Soul Ritual can only be done one at a time. The tension builds... and then they start playing Rock–Paper–Scissors.
  • Badass Adorable: Levy might be cute, but she was able to injure Gajeel, who was considered one of the strongest mages of Phantom Lord.
  • Bash Brothers: Natsu and Gajeel really have trouble getting along, but when Laxus royally pissed them off (see Berserk Button below), the duo quickly proved that they make a surprisingly effective team.
  • Berserk Button:
    • To Dragon Slayers, the Dragon Soul Ritual is something sacred. As such, when Natsu and Gajeel see Laxus using a dragon lacrima to make himself an artificial Dragon Slayer, they utterly flip out at this perversion of their ritual, fully unleashing their Dragon Slayer Magic against him.
    • Wendy has the exact same reaction when she sees Cobra and his Poison Lacrima. The normaly shy and gentle girl goes on the offensive and fights to kill.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: All Dragon Slayers, being that they can eat their respective elements. Lisanna and Erza have both described Natsu's Fire and Earth respectively as being delicious to the point of possibly being addicting.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: Igneel's parents Ignis and Teraneel died injuring Acnologia, forcing the latter into hiding.
  • Call-Forward: While Natsu is helping Mira pick her element for Dragon Slayer Magic, he tells her about how Igneel told him about Forest Dragons, and how the oldest one, in particular, is resting on the continent Guiltina and is referred to as a god. This of course being an obvious reference to Aldoron, the Wood Dragon God, and one of the Five Dragon Gods that must be slayed as part of the titular quest.
  • The Casanova: Gildarts, upon his conversation with Cana, immediately starts yelling the names of women in a panic trying to figure out whose daughter Cana is. This is played with, as Gildarts figures out that she's his one true love's daughter the second she reacts in a way he recognizes. He also laments her mother leaving him because of how married to the job he was, and how much it hurt him.
Gildarts: Wait! Which one is your mother?! Sara? Naomi? Clara? Mina? Mary? Liza? No wait, the hair color is all wrong! Emma? Lila? Jenny? Sidney? Kate? The Yugo Sisters?
Cana: Sisters?! Just how many women have you been with?!
  • Chekhov M.I.A.: As per canon, going through the Eclipse Gate caused the five Dragon Slayers of the past to be separated from one another. While Natsu and Gajeel did meet again later on before Lucy joined, none of them know where Wendy, Sting, and Rogue are. Cana tried using Divination to locate them, but turned up empty, saying that could only happen if their magic was interfering with her Divination, or if they didn't want to be found.
  • Combination Attack: Lisanna and Mira have complementary powers. Mira's wood/leaves/plants can burn easily.
  • Covert Pervert: Both Erza and Mirajane have had their minds fall into the gutter quite often.
  • Damsel out of Distress: As per canon, Erza is captured by Jellal's group and taken to the Tower of Heaven. This time around, she breaks free of the Card Magic binding her as they arrive, then goes One-Woman Army on his minions.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Trinity Raven all meet their ends at the hands of Natsu and Co. at the Tower of Heaven this time around. To boot:
      • Vidaldus gets a case of fatal alcohol poisoning after breathing in the alcoholic mist from Cana's attacks, which is made up of pure alcohol that, as Cana puts it, is extremely toxic to the human body.
      • Fukuro is blown up by Lisanna after she casts Dragon Slayer Secret Art: Crimson Lotus: Exploding Flame Blade on him.
      • Ikaruga gets subject to the iron maiden treatment after Mirajane traps her with Forest Dragon's Bramble Thicket, with the assassin Impaled with Extreme Prejudice by the spell's thorns.
    • Jellal gets turned into a Torso with a View by Natsu's Secret Art, Pyroclastic Obsidian Blade.
    • Erik, following a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown from a pissed-off Wendy, meets his demise to her Dragon Slayer Secret Art: Shattering Light: Sky Drill, fatally wounding him to destroy his Dragon Lacrima.
  • Demoted to Extra:
    • Downplayed. Gray isn't part of the main cast this time around due to the focus being on Natsu and his mates, both current and future, instead of being on the "Strongest Team". He still has important roles in the Lullaby and Galuna Island arcs and is one of the more prominent members of the Guild, but his absence is notable, particularly during the Phantom Lord arc where Natsu is the one Juvia faces and falls in love with.
    • Aside from being the ones to capture Erza, Sho, Wally, Milliana, and Simon have greatly reduced roles compared to the canon "Tower of Heaven" arc, due to Erza being able to escape on her own and entrap them in stone.
  • Desecrating the Dead: How first-generation Dragon Slayers like Gajeel and Natsu see the use of Dragon Lacrima. Given that Dragon Lacrima here are formed from the heart of a dead dragon and implanted into people in a perversion of the Dragon Soul ritual, they have every right to be pissed off at such blatant disrespect to dragon kind.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Jellal certainly didn't expect Erza to cleave the Tower of Heaven in half with her Earth Dragon Slayer Magic's Secret Art attack, ruining his plans of tricking the Magic Council via his Thought Projection plant, Siegrain to fire the Etherion at said tower that would have absorbed the blast and convert it into Lacrima for the R-System.
  • Hard Head: The Alpha Wyvern's head actually hurt Lisanna's hand a bit when she punched it using her Fire Dragon's Iron Fist. This happened during the Family Hunt with the Strauss siblings and Natsu.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Some things remain the same even with the changed events and relationships.
    • Despite Grammi being present this time with Aquarius' key, Layla Heartfilia still dies from opening the Eclipse Gate, in turn worsening Lucy and Jude's already strained relationship, leading to the latter hiring Phantom Lord to bring her back home.
    • While the two do remember each other from childhood, Natsu and Gajeel still don't like each other upon reuniting years later, albeit this time due to being in rival guilds and, as the girls speculate, Phantom Lord encouraging Gajeel's worst traits.
    • Lucy and Natsu's meeting at Port Hargeon is practically identical up until having to deal with Bora.
    • Despite perfecting the method to create Dragon Slayers, said users of Dragon Slaying Magic are still heavily susceptible to debilitating motion sickness, that even the strongest motion sickness medicine merely lessens the effect rather than eliminating it.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: To list:
    • Erza: Erza bathed with Natsu without a care in the world when they were younger. When the Dragon Soul Ritual concluded during her turn, she moaned lewdly.
    • Mirajane: She told Natsu that "she might need more loving than you can imagine" when they became official. Also moaned lewdly when the Dragon Soul Ritual concluded.
  • Logical Weakness: Like all runners, Racer needs traction to run as fast as he can. Grey and Lyon quicky nullify his extreame speed by freezing the battlefield making Racer a sitting duck.
  • Loophole Abuse: Ur's survival is because of how Moon Drip was worded. It undoes magic, not simply breaks it. By undoing Iced Shell, Ur could therefore be returned to life as if she never casted it in the first place.
  • Made of Iron: Dragon Slayers are this by default. As Natsu stated, "It wouldn't be much of an iron fist" if their hands weren't protected.
  • Man of Kryptonite: In Cana's fight against Vidaldus, the Booze Dragon Slayer states that she's practically the worst person for Vidaldus to fight against since alcohol dries out human hair, making her abilities the perfect counter against Vidaldus' magic-absorbing hair.
  • Mundane Utility: Natsu uses his Dragon Slayer powers to... help a farmer dig a trench for his livestock in his very first mission.
  • No Nudity Taboo:
    • While it was a completely innocent scene due to the characters' ages when it happened, Erza has absolutely no issues getting in the bath with Natsu to ensure he cleaned himself, claiming that, "There's nothing wrong with a little skinship between comrades."
    • Ur, full stop. When told by her daughter that she wasn't going to Galuna's village naked, she waved her off saying the blanket is enough. Granted, even she's confused by Gray's unconscious stripping habit.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Natsu has absolutely no defense against them when one of his girls uses them.
  • Polyamory: Like most of Kairomaru's stories, this fic has a polyamorous relationship between its main characters. While described as a harem fic, it should be noted that the girls are just as intimately affectionate with one another. However, Kairomaru has confirmed that Strausscest is not a thing.
  • Raised by Wolves: All First-Generation Dragon Slayers from the past, as per Canon, are survivors of dragon attacks that were orphaned and raised by dragons, receiving only rudimentary education and manners in the process.
Cana: You'll have to forgive Natsu, he was raised by a dragon, and human customs are only partially understood apparently. Also, I'm not sure he understands fear very well, he's a bit weird like that.
  • Rock–Paper–Scissors: How Erza and Mira decide who goes next with Natsu for the Dragon Soul Ritual.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: At the start of the Tower of Heaven arc, Cana does a twerk dance for Natsu, and the rest is covered only by a Modesty Towel, and even then that was not a sure thing as she held the towel open while facing away.
  • Ship Tease: Like in canon, both Gajeel and Levy have a very noticeable chemistry with one another, but here it starts the night of Phantom Lord's declaration of war, rather than the aftermath when Gajeel joins Fairy Tail. Part of this is due to Levy being an Adaptational Badass as was capable of holding her own against the Iron Dragon Slayer.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Ur in canon was killed by sealing Deliora away. Here, she was able to be freed from the ice due to how Moon Drip's powers were worded.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Like hell; this is a fanfic, not a shonen! When Jellal's group kidnaps Erza, the Dragon Slayers and Juvia went after them at full force, using lethal force against Trinity Raven as their first resort.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Jellal loses his composure after Erza destroyed his Tower of Heaven, ruining everything he had planned along with hearing the arrival of her Dragon Slayer friends coming after him, forcing him to call back his Siegrain persona and regaining half of his magic power to get himself back to his full strength.
