Go To

Ryuko Matoi, Gwen Stacy and Hobie Brown are your teenage friends who hang around a lot and play a few songs to the masses as a band. When they are transferred into Honnouji Academy, they got into trouble with the school's Elite Five and their leader, Satsuki Kiryuin. After narrowly escaping from Satsuki's assault, the three friends, along with tagalong, Mako Mankanshoku, hide out at Ryuko's father's home.

While there, they encounter a swarm of spiders who bite all four of them. However, these are no ordinary spiders as these arachnids had been mutated by a mysterious fabric called the Life Fibers. Now, Ryuko, Gwen, Hobie and Mako are granted the power of Life Fibers and the abilities of a Spider and they are going to challenge Satsuki's rule.

Kill La Kill: The Web of Life is a crossover between Kill la Kill and Spider-Man. It is made by PowerCore Productions and part of the Anime X Marvel series, the Spiderverse Saga. It can be found here.

The fic contains the following tropes:

  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Unlike his comic counterpart, Matt Murdock loses his sight after sacrificing it as payment to fully utilize his prototype Kamui suit.
  • Adaptational Heroism:
    • While Matt Murdock is based on his Spider-Gwen counterpart, he is far more noble and willing to help the Spiders to go up against Satsuki which is more in line to his main comics counterpart.
    • Arguably, the Hand as they aligned themselves with the good guys in stopping Satsuki and then later, Ragyō and her forces.
    • Despite being a Mad Scientist like her Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse counterpart, she's a loyal member to Satsuki and she, along with the rest of the Elite Five help the Transfers, Nudist Beach and the Hand to stop Ragyō.
  • Adaptation Deviation:
    • The Elite Four change to the Elite Five with the addition of another member, Olivia "Liv" Octavius.
    • Instead of Ryuko facing Satsuki's elite on her own, she, her Spider team and Matt Murdock battle each member.
  • Amazon Chaser: Hobie is really, REALLY fallen head over heels for Satsuki Kiryuin.
  • Arch-Enemy: Both Hobie and Gamagori form an intense hatred towards each other. Hobie sees Gamagori as an obstacle that gets between him and Satsuki while Gamagori despises Hobie for his disrespectful vulgar attitude towards Satsuki.
  • Birds of a Feather: Gwen, Ryuko and Hobie form a close bond due to their shared experiences in the loss of their loved ones.
  • Cain and Abel: Tsumugu seeks to destroy all Life Fibers but unfortunately, he also has to contend with his brother, Hobie who is not gonna lie down and let him harm him and his friends.
  • Composite Character:
    • Web of Life's Ryuko Matoi is a mix of her canon counterpart and Jessica Drew's Spider-Man.
    • Web of Life's Satsuki Kiryuin is a mix of her anime counterpart and Silk.
    • Mako takes on the role of Peni Parker, being the one to build SP//dr.
  • Disappeared Dad: Both Gwen and Ryuko lost their fathers after an incident at Ryuko's father's home killed them.
  • Groin Attack: After learning Tsumugu's connection to Aikuro, Ryuko threatens the latter into spilling what he knows otherwise she'll drive her Scissor Blade between his legs and start snipping.
  • Family of Choice: Hobie admits that both Gwen and Ryuko are more family to him than his own brother.
  • Hybrid Power: The Spiders' abilities are derived from a combination of Life Fibers and Spider DNA. This allows the Spider to not only have the strength, speed and senses of a Spider but also produce Life Fiber webbing.
  • Kick the Dog: Nui does not hold back taunting the hell out of Ryuko and Gwen, especially the latter when Nui makes fun of her parents and Peter's deaths.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The Transfers are based on Gwen's band, the Mary Janes from Spider-Gwen.
    • Ragyō using clone versions of Gwen's loved ones is based on the infamous Spider-Man's The Clone Saga which not only had a clone of Gwen Stacy but also the creation of Peter Parker's clone, Ben Reilly.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Instead of taking Satsuki, Ragyo took Gwen as her prisoner resulting in the latter to wear Junketsu.
    • Not being a prisoner, Satsuki has a talk with her sister, Ryuko causing the latter to reconcile with Senketsu.
  • The Power of Rock: Hobie uses his Life Fiber-infused guitar to send powerful shockwaves to take down Gamagori.
  • Related in the Adaptation: In this fic, both Hobie and Tsumugu Kinagase are brothers, having separated from each other due to their parents divorcing. Hobie stayed with his father at the UK while Tsumugu left with his mother an returned to Japan.
  • Rock Trio: Gwen, Ryuko and Hobie formed a band and spent some of their time playing music to people. They didn't have a name for the band until they decided to call it "The Transfers", a term used by Satsuki to refer to the new transfer students of Honnouji Academy.
    • Hobie: Guitar
    • Ryuko: Bass
    • Gwen: Drum
  • Ship Tease: Throughout the series, Hobie madly pursues and courts Satsuki with the latter showing hints of interests towards the boy. At the end, it turns out Satsuki is always head over heels for Hobie but buried it due to having to deal with Ragyō.
  • Sleepwalking: Ryuko, Gwen and Hobie notices Mako sleepwalking during the night and are not sure why. They discover that she (her smarter half) has been building the SP//dr mech so that she can uses it to help them in battle.
  • Super-Intelligence: Mako's actual Spider power is this but the twist is that her Split Personality, Sleepy Mako is the one that can use it.
  • Technicolor Magic: Each Spider has a different colored webbing.
    • Gwen's webbing is pink.
    • Hobie's webbing is blue.
    • Ryuko's webbing is red.
    • Mako's is the standard white color due to only being able to use her robot to make the webs.
    • Satsuki's webbing is shimmering silver.
  • Use Your Head: Spider Punk's favorite tactic. Considering there are spikes lining on his mask, it's not hard to see why.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: Satsuki and then later, Ragyō seek to capture the 4 Spiders as their ability to produce Life Fiber webs can useful for their own plans.
  • We Are Not Going Through That Again: Gwen attacks Superior Spider-Man, who she thought is Peter Parker, after her ordeal with the clone Peter.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Matt Murdock and Uzu Sanageyama were comrades, having both worked under Kingpin. That is until Kingpin had Matt's father killed leading Matt to betray Kingpin and had him arrested. After that, Matt left Uzu behind to fend for himself.
  • Wham Shot: Nue appears before the heroes and introduces to them her two new allies, Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy/Ghost Spider.
