Fanfic / Deku in Class 1-B

Go To

When Eraserhead deemed Izuku with no potential without giving him a chance; Vlad King stepped up refusing to let the latter be stripped of his right to be in the hero course. How will this affect him on a personal level? Will he able to succeed as he did in Class 1-A?

Deku in Class 1-B is a My Hero Academia fanfic written by Demon heart 12 telling a What If? scenario on how the story of MHA would change if Izuku was a student of Class 1-B instead of 1-A.

The fic can be read here.

This fanfiction contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Thanks to the teachings and guidance of Vlad King, Izuku was able to get a hang of One For All much earlier than in canon. He was able to unlock Full Cowling early on and was able to hone his skills much better with the help of Gran Torino.
    • The rest of Class 1-B also become much more stronger than they were in canon after going through Izuku's Quirk analysis notes.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • The appearances of the students of Class 1-B, minus Monoma, and Vlad King appear much sooner than in canon, where they only show at the Sports Festival arc.
    • Gran Torino shows up much earlier to train the 1-B students for the Sports Festival.
    • The Wild, Wild Pussycats show up during the Final Exam arc as opponents for some of the students instead of the Training Camp arc.
    • The vestiges of One For All only showed up after the Cultural Festival Arc. Here, they show up at the end of the Final Exam Arc after Izuku manifested Blackwhip during his fight against All Might.
  • Adaptational Jerkass:
    • Unlike in canon, Aizawa planned on expelling Izuku on the spot the minute the latter enters his class without even giving the boy a chance to prove he earned his spot in the Hero course, believing that Izuku's lack of control of his Quirk is due to him being arrogant due to having such a powerful Quirk.
    • While he was already bad in canon, Bakugo's behavior here is even worse and treated more seriously. He doesn't seem to grasp that what he's doing is wrong and believes that Izuku and all Quirkless individuals are the scum of the Earth and sees nothing wrong with putting the green-haired boy "in his place"(as in tormenting the boy for his own amusement). He even rejoices in the fact of hurting the 1-B students during the Sports Festival just because they are friends with Izuku. His continued shitty behaviour eventually leads to him be put on probation with the threat of expulsion if he doesn't start improving his behavior.
    • Iida also becomes more of this after the fight against Stain. He blames Izuku and Kamakiri for "getting in the way of his revenge" against Stain and for the injury he received which leaves him paralyzed, ignoring the fact that the Hero Killer was a villain way out of his league for killing many experienced Pro Heroes and that Izuku and Kamakiri literally risked their lives to save him. Iida, however, just ignores all of that and blames the two 1-B students for getting in his way, with this hate even reaching out to the rest of Class 1-B and spreading misinformation on Izuku to his own classmates.
    • Even Shoto falls into this since he never got his canon pep-talk from Izuku due to losing to Tetsutetsu. As a result, his unhealthy mindset of not using the fire side of his Quirk only causes his behavior to get worse. During the fight against Stain, Shoto provides little to no assistance to Izuku and Kamakiri, using his ice to block and attack them whenever they tried to attack Stain so that they don't get in his way of beating Stain on his own with just his ice just to prove a point, he was so bad that Izuku and Kamakiri were forced to knock out Shoto so they can fight the Hero Killer without any disturbances. This only causes him to develop a grudge against the two 1-B students, glaring at them whenever he sees them and blaming them for getting "in his way". During the Final Exam, when he was paired with Izuku against All Might, he deliberately blocks the entrance of the exam site so that he can take down All Might on his own just to prove a point to Endeavor that he doesn't need to use his fire to win fights despite knowing that Izuku might fail his grade.
    • Kirishima, of all people, also gets this treatment. Once it becomes clear that Bakugo is put on probation and removed from the Hero course and that Iida and Shoto were injured during the fight against Stain, based on what his two classmates told him, Kirishima believes that Izuku is a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing trying to remove all of 1-A's best students just to get the spotlight on his class. After he told his theory to his classmates, all the girls think he's crazy while half the boys believe it to be true, so Kirishima remains wary and glares at Izuku whenever he gets the chance.
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul: In canon, Monoma spends almost every moment onscreen harassing Class 1-A, claiming that Class 1-B, his class, is the superior class in the Hero course. Here, due to being a member of Class 1-A, he harasses Class 1-B.
  • Adaptational Villainy: While the teachers of Aldera were already awful in canon due to their Fantastic Ableism towards Izuku due to his Quirklessness. Here, after doing some digging and peeking through their camera footage, Nezu learns that the school has ties to the Meta Liberation Army and were planning on converting Bakugo into their ranks by inflating his ego and making him adopt their prejudices of the Quirkless.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Izuku and Setsuna have started calling each other "Izuchan" and "Setchan", respectively.
  • All for Nothing: The bloodthirsty villain, Muscular, was able to escape from the authorities' clutches despite Izuku breaking his arms in order to defeat him.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: The religious and "pure" Shiozaki has developed feelings for the foul-mouthed Awase, something that hasn't gone unnoticed by their class.
  • Ascended Extra: Due to Izuku being a student of Class 1-B instead of 1-A, a majority of the story focuses on the 1-B students, going into major depth over their motivations and their backstories.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Izuku's analysis of Quirks and how they can be improved is so great that when Vlad noticed his notes, he was surprised how it included ways of using his Blood Control Quirk that he never thought about. Even Nezu and the rest of the U.A. faculty was impressed, so much so that they took Izuku's advice on how to use their Quirks to heart during their mock battles against the students during their Final exams. Many students from 1-B and even 1-A come to Izuku for advice on how to further improve themselves.
  • Badass Normal: Played With. Izuku tried to be this by learning martial arts. But whenever he tried to do so through self-learning or by entering a dojo, Katsuki would show up to beat him up and yell at him for "looking down at him", discouraging Izuku from pursuing martial arts.
  • Big Brother Worship: Deconstructed. Iida wishes to be a hero due to being inspired by his brother, Tensei AKA the hero, Ingenium. However, after his brother got crippled by Stain and he was denied seeking vengeance on the Hero Killer due to Izuku and Kamakiri taking him down, Iida seeks to overcome any obstacle on his own in hopes of feeling worthy of inheriting his brother's hero name. This was especially shown during his and Reiko's practical final exam where he charged in head-on, to take down their opponent, Reverb, instead of coming up with a plan which led to him getting knocked out.
  • Blaming the Victim: Due to Bakugo being put on probation and receiving biased news from Iida and Todoroki regarding the fight against Stain, Eijiro and the boys of 1-A (minus Tokoyami, Shoji, and Koda) believe that Izuku is trying to remove all the powerhouses in their class just to put his class in the spotlight.
  • Break Them by Talking: Mandalay pulls this tactic on Kinoko and Tokoyami during their final practical exam by poking at their insecurities. Vlad King was actually against this, stating that it was too much even for a practical exam while Aizawa deems it as necessary as they will be facing these kind of villains in the future once they go pro. Luckily, both Kinoko and Tokoyami were able to power through, find their opponent, and pass their exam.
  • Childhood Friends: Both Kendo and Monoma knew each other since they were in kindergarten.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Momo is this for Monoma, firing a knock-out dart at him whenever the Copy user tries to do his crazy talk routine.
  • Cool Big Sis: Setsuna's older sister, Hana, is this to her, even if she does tease her from time to time.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Subverted. During the Sports Festival, many people thought that Shoto would easily take down Tetsutetsu due to how powerful his Quirk is, only to be surprised to see Tetsutetsu break through Shoto's ice attacks as his Quirk can handle temperature changes. That said, it wasn't an instant win as Shoto's rapid ice attacks and Tetsutetsu's resilience turned the match into a battle of attrition with Tetsutetsu ultimately winning due to Shoto collapsing from the extreme cold.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Kamakiri lost his father at a young age when he and his mother were being hunted down by mutant bigots.
  • Death by Adaptation: Native dies after being fatally wounded by Stain.
  • Demonization: Poor Izuku is subjected to this:
    • A combination of Iida and Shoto spreading misinformation and his own personal bias makes Kirishima come up with the theory that Izuku is a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing trying to get his class in the spotlight while removing all of Class 1-A's powerhouses.
    • Setsuna's mom being a Horrible Judge of Character, sees Izuku as a troublemaker who is a bloodthirsty Blood Knight who is just looking for trouble seeing after watching the way he brutalised Bakugo, as well as his run-in with psychotic villains like Stain and Muscular, and the incident on I-Island. This is without going into depth, knowing the context of his relationship with Bakugo, or that him running into villains where beyond his control.
  • Demoted to Extra: Downplayed. Despite a majority of the fic's focus on Class 1-B, the fic also tends to show what Class 1-A does from time to time.
  • Disappointed in You:
    • When Katsuki's actions as a bully are revealed, Masaru lets his son know how disappointed he is in his son and calls Katsuki out for not admitting to his faults. He even lets Katsuki know he even blames himself for believing in his son, which shocks Katsuki into silence.
    • After hearing from the faculty of U.A. regarding his brother's behaviour, Tensei lets Iida know that he wasn't happy, especially how he behaved during his final practical exam, yelling at Reiko for "getting in her way".
  • Disproportionate Retribution: When Katsuki learns that his first opponent during the one-on-one matches of the Sports Festival is Setsuna, one of Izuku's closest friends, he immediately smirks at the thought of beating the crap out of her. While Setsuna hides it, she internally notes that Katsuki really wants blow up anyone who even so much as smiles at Izuku.
  • The Dreaded: Gran Torino has become this for the entirety of Class 1-B after their training with him for the Sports Festival. When they learned that he would showing up at the training camp to train them again, they all shivered in fear and even warned Class 1-A of what he is capable of. Aizawa even went as far as to say that Gran Torino makes him look like a saint.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • As much as he hates Class 1-B and wishes to upstage them, even Monoma found Kirishima's theory of Izuku removing the powerhouses from their class just to get his class into the spotlight to be just outright ridiculous and wanted no part in it.
    • Aizawa may be an Apathetic Teacher but even he is disgusted to find out about the extent of Bakugo's behaviour, especially after hearing about the Suicide Dare he gave to Izuku out of ableism for being Quirkless. He was wondering why the faculty were even bothering about coming up with a lighter sentence for the blond bully as he doesn't want to defend a student who has done such deplorable actions.
      • Even Aizawa found the way Iida unjustly yelled at Reiko into tears for his own mistakes to be a HUGE no-no.
  • Heel Realization: After the events at I-Island, Tenya has a heart-to-heart conversation with his brother Tensei. After explaining the errors that Tenya made during the exam, how his brother didn't asked to be avenged, and how he unjustifiable yelled at Reiko, Tenya realizes how much of an asshole he was and wishes to make amends with Izuku and the rest of Class 1-B.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: After Bakugo is put on probation and removed from the Hero Course when his past actions back at Aldera came to light, Kirishima is convinced that Bakugo is "not as bad" as Izuku is putting him out to be and comes up with the remarkable theory that Izuku is a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing trying to remove all the powerhouses of 1-A from their class after finding out that Tenya and Shoto have been temporarily placed in Gen Ed after their reckless actions against the Hero Killer. This is especially after the fact that he witnessed Bakugo give a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown to Setsuna during the Sports Festival, burying her in rubble and decided to paint Izuku as the bad guy after getting some unreliable info without getting any information from Izuku directly.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: When Bakugo entered U.A., he was fully expecting to be the new top dog of the school, only to be overshadowed by other students in his class, who possessed Quirks that are just as strong or stronger than his own. After his assault on Izuku in the cafeteria, he was sent to Principal Nezu's office where he learns that he won't be receiving any special treatment at the school and that if he freely assaults Izuku or anybody with his Quirk again, he will not only be expelled but will also be sent to Tartarus. This all culminates in him showing his horrible attitude in the Sports Festival during the one-on-one matches, and has prompted the teachers to look into his previous school and found out how much of an abhorrent and remorseless bully he is, resulting in him being put on probation and sent to an orphanage to look after Quirkless children with the condition that if not one of them says that he has what it takes to be a hero, then he'll be expelled from U.A. permanently.
  • Hypocrite:
    • When Aizawa calls Shoto out on blocking and attacking Izuku and Kamakiri when they were trying to fight Stain, the fire and ice user's defense was that they were getting in his way of taking down the Hero Killer. However, the opposite is true as Shoto blocking the 1-B boys from attacking Stain for the sole purpose of proving a point to Endeavor shows that he was the one getting in their way. It got so bad that they were forced to knock him out so they can focus on Stain without any interferences.
    • Most of the boys of Class 1-A believe that Izuku, and by extension the rest of Class 1-B, are trying to sabotage their class after Katsuki is removed from the Hero course and due to some improper context by Iida and Todoroki. However, during the final practical exams, they were the ones who were ironically sabotaging Class 1-B as Sato's paranoia of the class trying to screw them over caused not only him, but Yui to fail as well.
  • Irony: Katsuki, who used to bully his former friend Izuku for being Quirkless, is put on probation and sent to an orphanage to look after Quirkless children with the condition that if at least one of them says that he can be a hero then he'll be allowed to return to the Hero course. After spending so many years tormenting his former Quirkless friend, Katsuki's hero career now rests in the hands of Quirkless children.
  • The Load: Rikido Sato of 1-A was this to Yui during their team-up at the Final Exams, due to Kirishima and Kaminari spreading the rumor that Izuku and his Class are planning on removing the powerhouses of Class 1-A just to get their class on the spotlight causes him to hesitate a lot during their exam against Gran Torino. During the whole fight, Yui was the only one who was putting in the effort while Sato kept second-guessing himself, which resulted in a failed grade for both of them. Needless to say, Yui was not happy that all her efforts went down the drain because of some rumor and she made Sato know it.
  • Man of Kryptonite: Tetsutetsu's Steel Quirk allows him to resist high or low temperatures, making him a perfect counter to Shoto's ice attacks during the Sports Festival as he was able to break out of his ice.
  • Never My Fault:
    • After being threatened with expulsion or worse from Nezu for assaulting Izuku in the cafeteria, Bakugo immediately blames Izuku for it, thinking that it was his fault.
      • When he was called out on pulling a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown on Setsuna during their match at the Sports Festival and learns that he may be in danger with her parents, who are highly professional lawyers, Bakugo once again internally blames Izuku for everything. Even though the green-haired boy had absolutely nothing to do with it.
      • During their match in the Sports Festival Finals, Izuku hits his Rage Breaking Point and has had it with Bakugo's self-centered and selfish attitude. Bakugo, for lack of a better word, doesn't accept any of it and tells Izuku to not blame him for his problems, even though he played a huge part in Izuku's problems, he even said that Izuku deserved all the horrible things he did to him.
      • Even after his past behaviour and actions were exposed and he's put on probation, he still blames Izuku for everything, yelling that had he kept his mouth shut none of this would have happened. It had to take Masaru to yell at Katsuki that nothing was Izuku's fault and that he only has himself to blame. He even warns Katsuki to not call Izuku "Deku", or he'll pull him out of U.A. entirely.
    • Iida blames Izuku and Kamakiri for the injuries he received from Stain as they "got in the way of his revenge" and holds a grudge on them. This is without even acknowledging the fact that Izuku and Kamakiri saved him from a serial killer who has killed and crippled many Pro Heroes and that his injuries are the result of his shortsightedness.
      • At the end of their final exam, Iida angrily accuses Reiko for not staying put like he wanted and even blames her for him getting knocked out despite it being his charge head on strategy that caused him to get knocked out by Reverb. Both Reiko and Reverb call him out on this.
  • Not So Similar: At first glance, Tetsutetsu and Eijiro's Quirks may seem similar, but that's only in terms of function. As Monoma pointed out, Tetsutetsu's Steel Quirk gives him a resistance to various elements, while Eijiro's Hardening does not. This made him a perfect counter to Todoroki during the Sports Festival, made even easier as Todoroki refused to use his fire.
  • Not So Stoic:
    • When Tenya yells at Reiko for "getting in his way" during their final exam, Reiko having had enough of dealing with his bullshit yelled back at him while giving him a "Reason You Suck" Speech before breaking into tears and running away, much to the shock and sadness of her classmates who were all watching.
    • After all her efforts of preparing for the final exam have gone down the drain due to Sato's paranoia, Yui yells at him and gives a "Reason You Suck" Speech before running away crying.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • Once Katsuki finally made Izuku hit his Rage Breaking Point during their final match in the Sports Festival, Izuku becomes livid, and effectively cuts all ties with the explosive teen, made evident by how he stops calling him "Kacchan" and starts calling him "Bakugo", something that causes Katsuki to visibly flinch.
    • Once the truth of their son's behavior is revealed to them, both Mitsuki and Masaru change considerably. Mitsuki has gone from being loud and bombastic to being quiet with a haunted look on her face and Masaru goes from an Extreme Doormat to an angry parent to show how disappointed he is with his son's behavior. Katsuki is quite shaken by this development.
  • Parental Neglect: Setsuna's parents are highly influential lawyers in the Mustafa region of Japan. Considering how busy they are at times, it's really hard for them to come home and make time with their daughters. Setsuna is visibly upset by this.
  • Point of Divergence: The fic diverts multiple times from the main canon:
    • Izuku being a student of Class 1-B causes several changes.
    • Tetsutetsu defeats Shoto in the Sports Festival so Izuku didn't snap him out of his unhealthy mindset of not using his fire just to spite Endeavor.
    • Bakugo is put on probation and removed from the Hero course for his actions during the Sports Festival and after the teachers found out about his behavior back in Aldera.
    • Izuku interns with Mirko instead of Gran Torino.
    • Both Class 1-A and Class 1-B have their Final Exams at the same time.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Tetsutetsu feels like his victory against Shoto is due to the latter only fighting with his ice and refused to use his full power. Though Kendo managed to cheer him up about it.
  • Rage Breaking Point: After Bakugo mockingly mentions how he felt sorry for Inko having to deal with a Quirkless son who "tricked Bakugo and everyone out of pretending to not have a Quirk", Izuku snapped and had enough of Bakugo's bullshit. The green-haired boy then proceeded to unleash a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown onto Bakugo while angrily calling him out for his self-centered attitude and the torment he had put him through despite only showing him kindness.
  • Razor Wind: Kamakiri learns how to do this with his blades after his internship with Yoroi Musha.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: In stark contrast to Aizawa's Sink or Swim Mentor methods, Vlad King handles his class by gently guiding them but also pushing and encouraging them to be the best that they can be. His teaching methods are a huge reason why Izuku was able to improve very quickly compared to canon as he was able to help and guide Izuku when he needed it most, gave credit where credit was due, and praise his strong points.
  • Rejected Apology: When Mineta tries to apologise to Pony for groping her at the end of their practical exam after getting an earful from his parents, Pony tells him to shove it.
  • Relationship Upgrade: By the end of Chapter 41, both Izuku and Setsuna confess their love for one another and become a couple.
  • Running Gag: Shiozaki having a spotlight appear on her whenever she makes a prayer has happened so many times that her classmates question if it's the use of a second Quirk or have stopped trying to figure it out and just accepted it for what it is.
  • Secret-Keeper: After Izuku and Setsuna get a Relationship Upgrade, Izuku decides to tell her about the secret of One For All and All For One after a brief conversation with All Might. After the two explain everything to her, Setsuna promises to keep everything a secret as well support Izuku as much as she can.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper:
    • Setsuna uses her Quirk on Izuku and Shoto when the latter wishes to speak privately with the former, which leads to her learning about Shoto's Dark and Troubled Past.
    • Due to the sensory nature of their Quirks, Shishida, Jiro, and Shoji were able to overhear the conversation going on between Izuku and Katsuki during the Sports Festival Finals and found out that the relationship between the two boys is that of a victim and bully. Needless to say, they were pretty disgusted to find out how much of an asshole Bakugo is. After the match, none of them told anyone what they heard out of respect for Izuku. When Bakugo is put on probation for his actions, Jiro said that he deserved it.
  • Selective Obliviousness: According to Momo, Kirishima is hit hard when Bakugo was put on probation and his past actions come to light, and deep down is aware that he isn't a good person. However, he refuses to accept that as that would be admitting he befriended a bully, so without even getting the full story, he blames Izuku when more of his classmates get in trouble.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Izuku and Setsuna.
    • Kendo and Tetsutetsu.
    • Shihai and Kinoko.
    • Awase and Shiozaki.
    • Reiko and Shinso have some moments, with the end of the Final Exams leading to them becoming a couple.
    • It's subtle, but Kaminari and Jiro also have some.
  • Stockholm Syndrome: Both Hound Dog and Setsuna deduced that Izuku suffers from a case of Stockholm syndrome due to the way the green-haired boy sees Bakugo as a friend with rough issues despite being a massive Barbaric Bully. He eventually snaps out of it during his match against him in the Sports Festival Finals, where he sees that Bakugo is completely unrepentant and shows no remorse for his past actions, this effectively causes Izuku to stop seeing him as his "image of victory" and instead sees him for what he truly is: an extremely selfish and self-centered bully.
  • That Man Is Dead: A variation. Tensei believing that Tenya is feeling overwhelmed by the pressure of inheriting his hero name decides that the hero, Ingenium, died for good after he got permanently crippled by Stain and told Iida that he's free to be his own hero.
  • Team Member in the Adaptation:
    • The fic is basically a retelling of MHA with Izuku as a student of Class 1-B.
    • With Izuku taking his spot in 1-B, Monoma becomes a student of Class 1-A.
  • Was It All a Lie?: When Katsuki learns that Aldera Junior High is connected to the Meta Liberation Army, he is shocked beyond belief and wonders to himself if all the praise he received from his teachers where nothing but lies to make him join their organisation.
  • We Used to Be Friends: After Katsuki mocks his mom and he finally sees how much of a self-centered prick he is, Izuku effectively cuts all ties with him and gives up on trying to reconcile with his bully. This is made clear when Izuku stops calling him "Kacchan" and instead starts calling him "Bakugo".
  • Women Are Wiser: While half the boys believe Kirishima's theory on how Izuku is trying to get rid of all of 1-A's powerhouses by battling Stain just to get his class on the spot light, the girls didn't believe it for a second and looked at the red-haired teen as if he was crazy. Even Mina, Kirishima's close friend, told him that he sounded like a crazy conspiracy theorist.
